Tufts Class of 2012

As an "addendum" to my last post, in what neighborhoods/streets in Boston do you guys have apartments? Two friends of mine are coming to Tufts medical with me through their early acceptance program next year and we're trying to get a rough idea of where it is affordable and fun to live, keeping in mind a close proximity to the red or orange T lines to get there.

There is a bus (the #10) that goes through South Boston to NEMC. My fiance and I are looking in Southie- as you typically get a bit more "bang for your buck" in Southie compared to other areas of Boston- and, it's more dog-friendly. Southie can be kinda annoying to get to other places in Boston, as the two red line stops in Southie can be quite a walk.

There are lots of areas off of the orange line in Jamaica Plain that are very nice to live and also quite affordable. You just have to be kinda careful as to exactly what neighborhood you are in. I haven't lived in JP before (I've worked there) so I can't exactly tell you which stops on the orange line are better than others- but, a good place to look.

Brighton is probably too far away in my eyes- only b/c the green line (specifically the B line) absolutely sucks. If you're within walking distance of the C or D line you could make it work. So, you'd be looking on the brookline side of Brighton, or in Brookline itself.

I've heard that quite a few people live in Cambridge or Somerville. I've been in Somerville and now Arlington for the last two years, and it's very do-able to get to NEMC. Depending on how long of a walk you have to the train, it's probably a 30 min ride once your on the train.

I've never lived directly downtown b/c of the cost. We looked at Beacon Hill (one of the most expensive areas) and for $1500 per month we could only get a small-ish studio (granted we have a dog, which limits everything).

If you're interested in where apartments are in relation to the T (only the train, not the bus) a really good website is:

http://www.thrall.net/maps/mbta.html

Hope that helps!

I'm going to be an M1 at Tufts next year and I'm looking for 2 male roommates from our class...already found a place so message me if you might be interested.

I am an entering Tufts Dental Student for fall 08, I am interested in a rooming with you. How much would it be per month?

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let you know that I have an available room in the Metropolitan starting Sept. 1. The building is right next to Tufts Med. It's a three bedroom and the rent is $1175 for the room. Utilities run about $50 a month as well. We have AC/heat, concierge, laundry machines in the building. Please let me know if you're interested!

Hey guys,

My roommate and I are going to be starting 3rd year soon, we are busy still studying for the boards, but we are looking to get 1-2 new tufts med students to join us in september. We have a great place in Coolidge corner right near both the B and C green line for access to school. We have a huge apt and if you are interested I have some pics that I can email you. We will have a small room for 450 per month available then (you can't beat that rent), and also possibly a bigger room for 550. Utilities are extra. A security deposit would be required (same as one month's rent). It is a 4 bedroom apt with a huge living area, big kitchen, and deck. A big plus is the washer and dryer right in our apt so no need to lug your clothes to the basement or to a laundromat. Obviously, another big plus is having two fellow TUSMs as roommates, we have tons of medical books here and plenty of good advice. (an XBox360 with rock band too for when you need to let loose, haha)

send me a PM, i will check it every few days

Thanks and congrats guys!!!

I feel like this thread is pretty quiet but I'll ask anyways- anyone looking for roommates? I'm basically going nowhere fast in the process so far but hit me up and maybe if we click we can look together 🙂

I'm 22, a girl, I have no pets, and I like fairly stupid tv because if I wanted to do something intelligent I would study.... I'm from northern California and I eat ice cream year round.

Hi, I am starting at Tufts in the Fall and am looking for a place to live with a male roommate(s) for around $800-1000. I am 23 years old, non-smoker, from Kansas, and am easy-going. PM me if you are interested. Thanks

Does anyone else think $3000 a year for an HMO is a rip off? I'm trying to convince my parents to let me stay under their insurance policy as long as possible. Do most people take this policy or not? It seems really expensive for student health care, as my undergrad was under $1000 for the year.

The facebook group - TUSM class of 2012 has posts about roommates and apartments. Seems like a good portion of the class has signed up there.

Hey there everyone!

I posted this very same thing on the facebook page, but thought i would throw it up here too just in case someone isn't checking both.

Looking for roommates for the most awesome of awesome houses! I’m writing up a long ass description hoping to cover everything, but please feel free to email me with questions. It is an unbelievable house, an excellent place to live and a value that will help us all stretch our limited dollars as far as possible.

It is a 6 bedroom / 3.5 bathroom single-family house (ie no loud neighbors) of massive proportions. All the bedrooms are huge. We have a giant living room, atrium, library/game room/study, backyard, basement and kitchen. That said, when you need your own space you’ve got it and when you want to hang with others you can. Free washer and dryer are located in the basement, a hammock in the yard and plenty of on street parking. The house it self is in great condition yet still has plenty of character. The property manager is attentive; rapidly replacing almost anything that breaks (recently got a brand new hot water heater and washing machine). The house is a 5 minutes walk from porter square, 12 from Harvard (both on the redline), and a 15 minute bike ride from NEMS! Also it’s very close to the several grocery stores and arguable the best burger joint in the state. I should also mention that the local dive bar is only a 3 minute roll away. So the big question is how much does all this cost? Are you ready? $584 a month plus utilities! Utilities range from $35 (summer) to $110 (winter) a month and include gas, electric, premium channels, DVR and fast wireless throughout the house.

The atmosphere of the house is pretty chill. Sadly a great part of the house, the roommates, are changing up; I guess we have to grow up sometime. We were 3 girls and 3 guys and 4 are moving on: (1 got a real job in NJ, 1 is starting a PhD and 2 are leaving to be with significant others). Molly, the other surviving roommate, works for a non-profit downtown, bikes a bunch, and loves the summer, traveling and skiing. As for me: I like skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, climbing rocks, brit-rock, country- rock, alternative-rock, classic-rock, indie-rock, some chick-rock, some hip hop, a smattering of other genre, good beer, middle of the road wine, bad scotch, puppies, long walks on the beach etc. I think I’ve probably rambled enough. You can friend me on facebook to check out my profile and see some party pics of the house (really, when else do you take pictures of your house?). The house is located on Craigie Street in Somerville and is affectionately referred to as Craigie in many pictures.

I’m guessing we’ll be busy guys and girls next year so I would love to fill the house with M1’s. As such we would have the same schedules, we can work hard, play hard and help each other enjoy the year!

I’ll be out of town with limited email, till the 4th of july. After that if anyone is interested in meeting up, seeing the place, grabbing a drink, etc. let me know.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hello everyone! I'm excited to meet everyone in August, and I was wondering if anyone was interested in training for the Boston Marathon with the Tufts team. I've been thinking about doing it for the past four years, but I am seriously considering it this year....anyone else? I'm a little concerned that I wouldn't have the time to train, and even more concerned that I wouldn't be able to run that much! 🙄

Hi,
Do you still have a room?
Thanks!

Rent is $1075 a month

Hey everyone! I'm really excited to get started in August and to meet you all. Looking at facebook, it seems like EVERYONE is pretty much from Boston (a lot of Tuft UGs) or CA. Are there any fellow midwesterners out there (I'm from Missouri)? I'm going to feel like such a hick. 🙂 But seriously, I'm very excited to meet all of you, and hopefully all of you Bostonians (?) can fill me in on the good places to eat/go out!

By the way, has anyone gotten emails recently? It seemed like I got a ton for a few weeks...but not so much lately...

Hi!

No emails recently, hopefully we'll get some info about orientation once August rolls in.....

No worries about not being from New England- I grew up in Florida (although I have lived in New England for a while now....)

Boston is amazing- you will love it here!

Yay for orientation emails!!!

Is anyone going to take exemption exams? I'm thinking of taking the cell, tissue, organ biology/histology one. Sounds like a cool deal if you pass. 🙂

And thanks, goosie, for the welcoming words!

Hi,

Not to sound like a total back-to-school dork, but does anyone know what kind of supplies we should get? I don't know if Tufts is a big note-taking school or if you get slides beforehand..... just trying to figure out what to get before Sept.....

See you all soon! =)

Besides the syllabus that you get before the start of each class, the slides are usually on TUSK, so you can print them out before classes. Few classes will have those slides already printed out.

When does the orientation at Tufts start?

hey everybody... i'm wondering what your thoughts/sense of obligation are regarding the white coat ceremony on Sept. 20th. i'm supposed to be in a wedding that very day, and i'm feeling a little conflicted. i would love some feedback-- is it a huge deal, worth missing one's bridesmaid-ly duties for?

Wow! I am NOT envious of your situation...I think I would probably choose the wedding, though. I think I would regret missing a good friend's (assumed bc you're a bridesmaid) wedding in lieu of a symbolic ceremony...but I also know that white coat is a big deal to me. I don't think that white coat is required, but it might be good to send OSA or OEA (I don't remember which does White coat) an email now. Good luck in making your decision.

Definitely go to the wedding. The white coat ceremony is really boring and kind of stupid in its self-congratulatory absurdity. You won't be missing out!

I agree with the post above, unless your parents are soooo proud and you feel like you must attend b/c of them. 😛

This seems like a silly question but I just got accepted for co 2013 and was wondering if the school has a gym bc I didn't see one when I visited. ? 🙄
