hey guys i am going to michigan state right now and waitlisted at tufts. if i do get into tufts then im sort of thinking about which to choose. michigan states tuition for out of state is more that tufts. i like the emphasis on prim care at michigan state but the second two years you do in community clinics, and it purposefully keeps you out of urban areas. but i really like the philosophy at msu! the good things about tufts is they have a md/mph program and has a lot of international opportunitites. plus i am a city gal and i think id be happier.... ahhh any thoughts?

calipaww-

Congrats on MSU! Right now I'm joining you, but might go somewhere else if I get off the waitlist. I spent last year at BU, so I know some about boston, but don't have the first hand experience of tufts. You sound like you really want to go to tufts, so I'll give you the flipside. I spent $1580/mo rent for a 1 bedroom studio on baystate w/o furnishing or utilities. EVERYTHING is expensive there. I'm actually surprised tuition at Tufts is cheaper than MSU. People in Boston are mean compared to lansing, and I think the facillities are better at MSU. ...I guess I'm out of the flipside. If you're a city girl, you'd probably be happier there. The T's great for transportation, and Boston has a ton more to do than lansing. Weather's about the same. You'd probably see more diverse cases at Tufts also. I personally hate boston, so I chose to go to MSU and withdrew at BU.

Calipaww, I know that MSU has a community campus in Flint (which most michiganians would consider an urban socio-economical depressed environment)and I believe there are some int'l opps. in Africa for the students (but that might just be for the DO students), that may change your opinion of MSU's educational options. On the financial side, the tuition at MSU for out-of-staters is outrageous ( when they announce the tuition increase in july don't be shocked if it increases 3-4000$ for out-of-staters). The state of MI has cut back on higher education funding, we will see the outcome on tuition soon. After seeing what domagnet spends on rent, between Boston or East Lansing you are going to be spending some dough.

GOOD LAAAAAAWD!!!!!! (Chris Rock Voice)😱 😱 😱

That's enough money to start paying a mortgage on a decent size house here in TX! 🙁

How much it costs to live in Boston depends on where you live and how many roommates you have. I lived there for a few years and I have to say that $1580 a month is absurd, even for Boston.

When I was there, I lived in the South End with two roommates, we each payed $700 (hot water included). I then moved out of the city to a neighboring town (but still on the subway) with one roommate and paid $700 (hot water included). I know someone who paid $400 (shared a house with four other people) and I know someone who paid $600 (shared a house with four other people). So, if you move to Boston you don't have to pay through the nose for rent. Just look carefully, live with roommates, and you will be fine.

east lansing/ msu is a very friendly place to live. it's true that rent is not very expensive, but there is a reason for that- there is not a whole lot to do. if you are a big city person it could be a very tough adjustment (it's been an adjustment for me and the city i moved to msu from would not be considered by any means a 'big city'). i am not a medical student at msu, so I can not speak for them. bottom line- msu is a great place to be(friendly and great primary care emphasis), but if you need the city lights then look elsewhere--- good luck!

Okay, so I've lived in Boston and Michigan... the question here is.... do you want to be learning in an atmosphere that's quite rural and midwest conservative or urban and liberal.... they are opposite places!!! MSU is awesome for rural medicine and cool if you want to stay in MI. Tufs will give you more latitude fro specailties and geography when you are finished... good luck!

If you go to MSU, you will save a PILE of money. You should be able to get resident tuition after one year, and a decent apartment in Lansing will be around $400-500 bucks. MSU will be a lot more fun than Tufts too, I guarantee it. Plus, if you do your rotations in the U.P., you can live ridiculously cheap there. You can rent a 3 bedroom house on a lake up there for 500 a month. Heck, my parents' mortgage in the U.P. for a 5 bedroom 3 bathroom new house on 40 acres costs considerably less than that Boston studio apartment.

Everyone who I know that went to MSU really likes it, and I may be there in the fall for my post-bacc. If I were you, its an easy call. Lansing is the state capital, with about 250-350K people. It isn't the boonies.

here are a few reasons to choose Tufts over MSU; I have never been to MSU but currently go to Tufts and love it here:
1) Tufts has the better national reputation, hands down.
2) If you want to do your residency in California, I would guess that you have a better chance coming out of Tufts, judging by our matchlist this year, which posts 8 UCLA-affiliated matches, 3 UCSF, 2 or 3 UCSD, 3 UCI, and 3 Davis.
3) Tufts is an amazing school when it comes to giving their students early clinical experience, including primary care. Worry not about being forced into research, the rumors on here are nowhere near the truth.
4) You won't have outrageously large class sizes of 300 people at Tufts due to the fact that we don't share lecture halls and anatomy labs with 100+ other students at the DO branch of the school. that being said, our class is still too big at 168 ppl.
5) Boston is much more interesting than Lansing and the transportation system is cheap and fast. It is also very close to skiing in the winter and beaches in the summer if you want to get out of town.
6) Overall very diverse student body, with ~70% of students being from New England, NY, or CA.

Good luck with your decision! Being waitlisted at Tufts is very, very good..😉

hey everyone thanks for all of your responses. the thing with mich state is that I am positive that you can NOT get residnecy after a couple years there .. so you end up spending about 60 K a year !!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhh ! i think for that amount id rather be in a location thatll make me happy🙂 so hopefully tufts will come through 😕
