I know reputation-wise, Emory is great. However, I am a fan of the Northeast, and I really like Boston (when compared to Atlanta). Am I sacrificing a lot by choosing Tufts? I'd really like to hear your opinions on these schools. Thank you.

personally, reputation aside, i'll pick emory over Tufts cuz i have family there, atlanta isn't as expensive as boston (i've lived in both), it's warm in atl, roads are good, people are nicer, tuition would be cheaper?, etc etc. so i guess it all comes down to where u would be happiest! do u have family in boston?, do u plan on practicing in boston-area, etc. Best of luck with your decision

Tufts sucks. Way over priced. The cost of living in Boston is very high-- you pay a lot to live in a shoe box. I've heard that the administration is not student friendly, and that students aren't treated well at NEMC. Emory in my mind is a far more respected school.

Go to Emory. Better Reputation, better weather. Smiling happy people ...

ouch ouch! Stop making fun of my school =).

SDN will for the most part say Emory dude. It is higher ranked and less expensive. Rely on other sources of info too (doctors, their websites, etc)!

I'm pretty proud to be going to Tufts myself. Was one of my top choices to start with, rarely enough. You should decide for yourself, though.

I thought this guy said he liked the northeast. Not sure how relevant the weather is with that already in mind. Atlanta and Boston are two very different cities. Cars are a must in Atlanta, which spreads waaaay further than Boston; definitely not a pedestrian city. As others have said, better weather.

I'd ask some other Tufts students before I jumped on the "Tufts sucks" bandwagon. That's being a little over-tough on any allopathic school.

Also, if you want to live in Boston/the northeast, remember it's generally easier to land residencies where people are familiar with your program and also at your home institution.

How do the pricetags compare? Or perhaps that's more for you to compare than to ask us for an estimation of the value of a $, which is going to vary from person to person.

Emory's name will certainly travel, but if you want to stay in the NE, Tufts goes about as far as you need it to. Check out the matchlists and talk to others with direct ties before you decide.

Sorry for being so harsh on Tufts. There are several reasons for this. I've been dinked around by that school long enough. They sent me a "delayed decision" in April, then I just found out I got waitlisted. Not that I wanted to go there, but it seems many people in the "DD" category do get waitlisted, even though the administration says that's not the case.

My reasons against Tufts are the following. I find their price tag a joke. It is one of the most expensive schools, and in one of the most expensive cities. I for one want to incur as little debt as I have to over the next 4 years. Another thing I didn't like was that there is no real campus, it's just buildings in a city mixed in with other non-med school buildings. Coming from an undergrad with a beautiful campus, I really didn't like this part about Tufts. Yes, there are the public gardens near by but it's still not the same in my eyes. Also, for what I'm interested in, Internal Medicine, Tufts match list pales compared to other schools I've gotten into. So maybe for what you want to do, it's different. As for living in Boston, I want to get out. I think the pace of life here is extremely fast and I'd like to live somewhere new. THat said, Boston, despite the high price tag, is a great city-- lots of history, nice architecture, museums and art galore, fantastic river to run around.

I do better in warm weather, which is a major plus in my mind for Emory. They have a well-reputed school of public health right next to the CDC so if you're interested in public health it's a great school to be at. Yes the public transportation is unreliable and you'd have to get a car. I've heard, but didn't get this sense while I was there, that the students are a bit competitive. The campus is gorgeous, and it gets warm there a whole lot earlier than in Boston. The school administers tests that are said to really gear you toward the boards (I forget what they call those though) so that was a plus for me as well.

These are just my opinions. People seem to be of two minds when it comes to picking a school. There are the label-****** who say "Go to the best school possible" and then there are those that say "Go where you will be happiest." I go with the latter, as I think your happiness will be what sustains you best. Only you can know what's most important to you.

Having grown up in Boston, I can say the city is awesome. I love it there. I wish I wasn't waitlisted at BU and Tufts because I'd probably go to either of those places over Penn State. You have the beach, the mountains, and the city all right there. Plus, the atmosphere of Boston is soo amazing. I love just walking around the city in the summer. It's small enough that you can easily find your way around but big enough so that there is a ton of diversity and culture. Granted, Tufts is expensive. But what's a few extra thousands of dollars when you are spending 200,000+ anyway? If location is a big factor for you and you're a fan of the northeast, go to Tufts. In the end though, it's up to you. No matter what you hear on SDN, it's not gonna sway your gut decision. G'luck.
