how much is the tuition and fees for a state resident at uc going to be for this coming year

Between 20K and 22K depending on the school. BASED on what I have seen in actual statements on websites and in acceptance literature.

and how much of that do they give in grants? i.e., what will the actual cost of a uc generally be?

UCSD- maximum grant was about 16K (however, they are "expected to decrease")

UCI- maximum grant is 6K next year for sure

I don't know about the others.

All in all, the UCs are still a pretty wicked deal. Let's say the tuition at your UC is on the high end at $22k/yr and you only receive $5k in grants. The amount you're paying out of your pocket and with loans is then only $17k/yr. That's still more than $10k/yr less than most prive schools out there (unless they give a lot of grants like I heard Stanford does.)

Is it legal for the UC's not to inform their students of tuition/fees before their decision regarding med schools must be made (May 15th). It seems as if money might be a factor.

Edit: Then again, if they gave you the official range of 20-22k, that's good enough.

Which UC? On UCD's website, the financial aid office already has a document that breaks down how much it will cost to attend for 2004-2005. I think this is just an estimate since the budget isn't done, but I it gives a good feel for how much it will cost.

The governator and the heads of UC and CSU just made a closed door agreement about financing for the systems. The it may not approved in the budget negotiations and it doesn't address professional school tuition. But it does allow for the UC and CSU systems to take a hit this year in return for funding promises for future years and set increses in undergraduate and graduate tuition. If anyone is interested:

your link doesn't seem to be working for me...

The agreement did address graduate school tuition and it called for increases of 20% over last year instead of 40%.

Right, but graduate tuition and professional tuition are two different things.

So is our 20-22K estimate a result of a 20% increase or a 40% increase, I"m lost....

20% and 40% is for graduate students, like people getting PhDs, teaching credentials, etc. The professional school tuition is different and in the governor's original budget he left it to the schools to set the tuition hikes that they deemed sufficient. So our 20-22K estimate is based on that. The UC/CSU handshake deal has no effect on our tuition. But the overall cuts the university takes will get passed onto us and that will be reflected in our tuition hikes.

Hey guys don't even start complaining. Look at us poor out-of-staters...and even worse, international students who can never claim residency no matter how long they have been in California.

Private schools...accept me pleeeease.
