Tulane SOM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Whoohoo! I just got accepted to Tulane last week and I am going to withdraw from my other schools/interviews. Can't wait to get back to NO...

For those of you who have interviewed for Tulane at Baylor, how does this work? I mean, they can't give you a tour of the school and hospitals, right??? So do you go to New Orleans after January to tour the campus then? Or are you just going to show up in Aug. and see it for the first time?

QofQ, they recommend that you head out to New Orleans if you're serious about coming. Admissions is moving there, but the med students will still be in Houston, so it will be different than most revisits, I'm sure.

Interviewed on October 28th, and received my acceptance on November 3rd.

I did the Tulane / Baylor interview: Tulane on Thursday, and Baylor on Friday.

Still a bit uncertain about the status of New Orleans - including clinical opportunities - but I'm going to send in my deposit and see how Tulane will wow me when second look weekends come around.

I was wondering if anyone who interviewed the week of November 7th has heard anything yet.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to join in the talk & say that I will be attending Tulane med school for next August. I interviewed on Oct. 12th & got accepted on Oct. 15th; the first round of acceptances that went out. I am very excited & am looking forward to next year & the most amazing experiences I think any medical student could possibly receive. Hope to see you guys next fall. Good luck to those still waiting to hear!!! :p

Howdy!

I'll be attending Tulane in August as well. I, too, am excited and can't wait to meet "y'all" for what I think will be the best med school experience in the US for the next four years. I interviewed in Houston on Nov. 2 and heard back a week later, before I even had a chance to send out thank you cards!!!

I just got into Tulane today!!! I'm so excited that I finally get to join this thread.

The word at Baylor is June. I am tired of having 16 people on a cadaver.

Hey, just thought I'd stick my head in and say welcome to all you brave souls headed our way for the fall! We can't wait to be back, either. :p

Don't get too excited. The president of Tulane just fired about a third of the med school faculty, is planning more cuts, and the dean just up and quit. Things do not look good.

I don't doubt it. You all have been SOOO generous, and I'm sure it gets old having an extra 320 students hanging around, using all your stuff. But we really appreciate it. Even though we all miss New Orleans, and want things to get back to normal there as soon as possible so we can go back, it's been a great experience to be here in Houston with all of you. Tulane would probably have ceased to exist if you all hadn't been there for us, and I doubt any of us will forget it anytime soon.

I am in N.O. now visiting my parents and I must say, the city does not look in bad shape at all. I walked around Tulane Avenue and Poydras Ave (where the Admissions office is currently operating out of) and it looks great! I am very excited about next year and I really think it will be a good experience to be a part of New Orleans and Tulane Med School as well. Uptown area ; where Tulane University is located, looks good too. And I went to a couple of coffee shops and restaurants and there is a big influx of students (mainly undergrads) are coming back to start school on Jan. 17th.
I think if anyone joins me next fall, will have a good experience and a good time too!!! Come on guys, cheer up!...things are looking good!
P.S. Happy New Year's! :)

I posted this in Tulane's other forun too... :p

A third of the faculty did not just get canned. I know, I'm there. They cut some professors that don't have NIH funding, that only teach and don't actively do research, and occasionally, sadly, a young professor that didn't have enough time to get his game on. They cut people who don't work, should have retired or are just started there and are new enough to be able to move on...but mostly its the older, less productive professors, don't see patients etc.

A couple of years ago Baylor (no media) had some electrical problems/outage and lost power long enough to loose millions in research supplies and equipment...4 yrs of negotiations with the insurance companies, they settled for 800 million.

Tulane will eventually get between 2 and 5 billion or more between the hospital, uptown, lost revenue, tuition, not to mentionthe flooding.

My one lab has about 10-20 million in losses and we're shopping like mad to replace stuff.

TULANE CUT THE FAT>....sometimes they cut someone who I wouldn't have like a young professor in my department

President Cohn....who is very well respected, and liked by faculty and staff alike, and is going to be a cornerstone in rebuilding the city. He took an opportunity to reorganize the university and we'll get all that back in more over the next 5 years (most of it) and after 10 years Tulane will be much better and stronger and prestigous for it.

As for the medical, I know a few first year residents who are all over the place and even they have faith in Tulane.

The city by the end of january will be back to aout 35% of the original population. Some hospitals (not tulane) are downsizing, and LSU says they're not moving to Baton R but that may be just a matter of time.

I guarantee you that by the time you start 3rd year rotations, the hospitals will be back and better and so will most of the people.

The clinics that are open now are working at near or past full capacity and they are now gearing up for the increased pop due to all the universities reopening.

Trust me, finding housing will be your biggest issue.

You would be wise to trust in Tulane.

I've worked in the med school in some form for 7 years.

I wouldn't be afraid for your education...it will be first rate and the patients are already coming back.

Not just my opinion,

-s

Just wanted to make the thread and see who plans to/wants to/is thinking about heading to New Orleans next year! :)
I was accepted in mid october, and I am very optimistic about the opportunities we will have as part of the re-building process. New Orleans is a great city and needs people willing to take on a difficult task.

p.s. Does anyone know what happened with Dr. Taylor?

I am really glad that there are others out there that are as excited and optimistic as I am about attending Tulane in August! Amazing things are going on in the city of New Orleans and Tulane is going to be right in the middle of it all! I've turned down all other acceptances because I don't think anything is comparable to the education that we are going to get at Tulane SOM, especially post-Katrina! :D

count me in. i went on all my other interviews this week but it just made me realize tulane is where my heart's at. see y'all there in a few months.

If anyone who is definitely going to Tulane next year is on Thefacebook, let me know. I'd like to get to know some of my classmates before August! I think we are going to have an awesome 4 years! :)

I am definitely going to TU this fall and I'd love to join the facebook, I don't know if can join without a TU e-mail address, and I am not sure if the SOM has its own site. But regardless, I am psyched about meeting our class and going to to NOLA (i am visiting in april)

To join thefacebook, you can use your undergrad email address and join that way, once you've joined, let me know and I'll add you as my friend. I'm totally excited as well, I didn't feel that any other schools compared to Tulane. The students, the faculty...they were all amazing! I'm ready for August to come! :)

he stepped down. couldn't live with his (really really) tough decision to cut faculty, many of whom he wooed and hired personally.

count me in, I suppose!

see everyone in august! Is anyone buying scrubs or stethoscopes or any of that stuff...?

I'm getting a steth around May/June. Scrubs I'll buy in August when I get there.

Anon, are you on the face book?

My mother got it for me, my understanding is that it is a nice one(accorrding to the person she bought it from), I beleive it is a Littman/3M II something or other (not sure on exact brand or model) it has non-metal head so it does not get cold. It's a little sureal that I will be able to use it someday.

Nice. Yeah, Littman is the brand, and the 3M/II is the model. It's a good scope!

I talked to the Financial aid office a couple weeks ago, they said they were sending out literature sometime in February.

I will be accepted tomorrow and I am going to take it. www.somforum.com This is an official Tulane student’s forum. It was very useful during the hurricane. Check it out. I do have a facebook account but I don’t know how to add people or even find them so this is my AIM, synoohe.
see you all soon

hey guys!
im 99% sure im going to be at Tulane next year... can't wait!!
Just out of curiosity, where is everyone from?? I was just wonderin how many people outside of LA (or people who have never really been to New Orleans) are joining the class because I know they wanted to interview people in that region more this year. I'm from chicago btw :)

I am from New York, and I believe there are alot people from California on this forum as well. Glad to hear you are psyched

far, far, far away from new orleans... :\

I'm kind of freaking out about getting all my stuff there by plane. Maybe Deming dude will allow me to put some stuff in storage at the dorm, if I decide to make an earlier trip down...?

Also, I wish Tulane would send us more stuff in the mail :) Information! Brochures! Anything! Just a minor complaint and I don't really mind too much under the circumstances, but I've been getting a ton of crap from the other schools which have accepted me... $700k in application fees received ought to cover something? :)

hopefully once they're done interviewing they'll start putting effort into making sure the people they interviewed/accepted actually COME to tulane.

edit: i'm from LA. but jjkr already knows that.

I just had to post something, no one had said anything in like two weeks, have maintain the Tulane web-presence. Anybody else getting excited? I am going down in April to check thinhs out and can't wait. Anyone with updates, stories or anecdotes please post, it gets me through my boring-ass day job.

Hi yall-

I've been following this thread for awhile now. I just interviewed at Tulane last wednesday and I'm hoping for a spot on the waitlist and, ultimately, a spot in next year's class. If not I'll be at UT- Houston, but I really loved Tulane...

Where in New York are you KAI1927? I'm in NYC in grad school at Columbia.

Harrah's, the big casino downtown reopened tonight. It was completely packed and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The French Quarter was pretty crowded too and the uptown bars were all packed.

anyone else sick of conversations like this:

random person: "so where are you gonna go to med school"
me: "probably tulane, down in n'orleans"
random person: "oh..(pause)...there's still a school down there"
me: "ya, its right across the street from the superdome, pretty cool eh?"
random person: [look of horror and confusion]
me: "you can go f*ck yourself, you know? here's a key to the bathroom"

Is anyone planning to start this summer for the MD/MPH stuff? I was hoping to move in mid- to late May but I have no idea where I'm going to live or anything. Does anyone have any plans? Or need a roommate? :)
