I've been accepted to TUSOM and have an upcoming interview at Sackler, I've been reading about the school and I will be in Tel-Aviv in a few weeks so I will try and tour the school/facilities and talk with students. As of now, I can't see myself not going to a school in the US, at the same time I do have a few concerns about Tulane. Is it ever logical to pass up a US school to go to a US-program-but-non-US-based school? My primary concerns are how easily I will be able to get residency/practice medicine in the US upon my return if I happened to go to school in Tel-Aviv. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I've considered Sackler, it sounds like a great school, but I would stay in US, given your choice because of residency prospects mostly, and for the sake of not being an IMG.

I vote for Tulane.

i've read figures that say about 30-40 percent of residency positions are filled by non-U.S. graduates. but the competitiveness and desirability of those positions are questionable. what concerns do you have with tulane? the portion of new orleans that tulane's medical school sits on was mostly unscathed by the storm. furthermore, tulane as an institution has been around for almost 200 years, and will probably not suffer much due to the situation. if anything, you'll have an awesome opportunity to do some volunteer work that will have a personal and profound impact. if your #1 concern is residency placement, you'd be out of your mind to pass up tulane for sackler (in my opinion).

Actually Sackler's match list isn't too bad, 90%+ being NY residencies (Einstein Montefiori was probably the best residency I saw... then Brooklyn, LIJ, etc.) but I saw tons of internal medicine as opposed to specialties. Living in Israel is obviously different from living in America. If you can live there for 4 years and return + adjust here, good for you, give it serious consideration. LCME (i.e. any north american) schools are going to categorically outdo ANY and ALL international schools for residency placement -- that is simply a cold hard fact. Even Sackler, despite its being "not bad".

my friend:
Israel and the dirty dirty are two very different places. if you need us to help you make the decision between the two of them, you got problems.

I can understand the concerns people have over Tulane. Let me tell you I spent last semester working as an EMT down here with Tulane doctors.

All I have to say is, go to Tulane if you want to get the #1 crash course in American for diligence, selflessness, and determination in rising again.

I'd be wiling to bet, and I hope, that most doctors believe in those three.

Sure, Sackler is a good school, but as far as residency placement is concerned, you're better off staying in the US.

besides, do you really want to go to a school that has SACK in its name?

Hey Mota, just wondering, are going to Tulane even if you got into your waitlisted schools? You seem pretty down with Tulane, but I was curious.

yes. i have a pretty good feeling about getting into Minnesota and Drexel is reviewing my file right now, but i can't see myself passing up tulane for anything else. there have been all these signs pointing to Tulane for me, know what i mean? one example: i told myself that if i got waitlisted at both minnesota and penn state i would go to tulane for sure. i got my second waitlist letter on 2/28...mardi gras. kinda hard to explain, but i know tulane is where i'm supposed to be. it sounds like no other med school has the vibe tulane does. i'll see you there. bring donuts.

Glad to hear it, thus far you seemed the most Gung-Ho about tulane and it seemed like you wanted to go there even when given an alternative. I am in exact boat (for lack of a better word), where I could go elsewhere but know I would me missing something special at Tulane. For me it was like I didn't even want to get anymore interviews because I got such a great vibe from Tulane no where else really swayed me. I am going down in April for a visit I will post pictures from the trip.

Mota,

When you posted that you got into Tulane, I remember thinking how perfect you are for each other. I can't explain it either considering I only know you from your posts.

the sameish type thing happened to me, mota! except i interviewed at another school on 2/28, and they gave me mardi gras beads when i came in. now if that aint a sign..im such a freak, i wont take em off till mardi gras's over in NO..the interview experience at that school only served to excite me further about tulane. funny. i am planning on going down to NO the last week in april: a weekend with my mom, a week of volunteering, and the first weekend of jazzfest. but i have to figure out mad details like, can tulane SOM give us a tour? where should i stay (fo cheaps! maybe tulane can help me out even?) who do i volunteer with? any ideas, kids?

I am going down in April after easter. I e-mailed dr. Beckman and told her I was coming down, she said she would arrange a tour for my family and I. The school is in NOLA is pretty much up and running and there might be T3,T4's there to give you a tour. As far as lodging, I would say try demming on campus, but the student affairs office can give you the numbers of recommended hotels (also on the TU website). Give Karen Joia a call 504-988-6660, she is very nice and helpful and assist with your visit. Good luck

Funny stuff, but u shouldn't rip off Rob Corddry 😀

Seems like a slam dunk...if you can go to Tulane over Sackler, I would definitely take it. It is a unique time in New Orleans to live there (although it is always a unique time in Israel.)
