I got offered an unpaid research spot at a large university hospital. Though they dont pay but there are other jobs on campus like tutoring.
I wanted to know how much I can make tutoring on campus as a university hired USMLE tutor.
I ask because I am not sure if i will be able to sustain myself for a year without pay and will need something else to help me pay rent, etc.

Just wanted to know what is the pay like ? Approximately ?

I don't know about university-hired, but Kaplan, etc. pay pretty well. I was being courted for MCAT tutoring for $30+/hr. USMLE probably pays better.

You can always seek out private students. Then you can charge less, but make more by keeping all of it. I have friends who charged between $20-30/hr for basic sciences and math tutoring and always had plenty of students clamoring for their help. With that score, there will be someone willing to pay a higher rate for your help.
You would have to do the legwork to find the students, and wouldn't have the brand name of the university / tutoring company.

Most med school tutors are in-house so I think that your best bet is going for one of the commercial companies like Kaplan. The pay is also substantially better than what a uni would give you (~$15-$20/hr).

So I would make around 20 bucks an hour. The guys at medschooltutors.com and other commercial firms charge $250 - $300 an hour for the same. Isn't $20 like.. really less.
I say so because with a research job which will take 10-12 hours a day I don't know how much time I will have left over. If I manage to tutor 100 hours a month (> 3 hours a day) it would pay $2000 which should be enough I guess. But that is if I can find students and I find the time.
Btw, are there any other jobs in a large city an IMG doctor can do ?
I just honestly want to make enough to pay the rent and for other expenses but don't have much savings as I am from a developing country.
Any advise would be much appreciated !
Thanks !

You can actually do well being a private tutor. Not so much if you try to get hired by a uni or some online site - those tend to screw over the tutors pretty bad, but the advantage is that you don't have to deal with the BS of finding clients.

In undergrad I tutored org chem for 40-60/hr and then probably one or two students through the uni which paid 1/3-1/2 that, but looked better on a cv (or so I thought, in reality I doubt anyone gave 2 sh*ts)

Thanks for taking the time out to respond to this. I really appreciate it.
Can you please help me out on one last thing - How exactly do I go about marketing myself / finding clients ? I know this may sound like a pretty vague question.. But if you could just point me in the right direction.. I will do the rest.. Thanks ! 🙂
