The Spinal Cord Injury Center at VA Palo Alto Health Care System (HCS) in conjunction with Stanford University School of Medicine hosts clinical and research fellowships in SCIM.
We are seeking qualified candidates for the Two-year program—The Post Residency VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Advanced SCIM.

The Program at VA Palo Alto HCS provides two years of post-residency research, education and clinical learning opportunities to eligible physicians. Fellows spend 75 percent in research and education with the additional 25 percent in clinical care. We provide guidance with mentors in an enriching learning environment. VA and the Spinal Cord Injury Center at VA Palo Alto (HCS) want to see its Graduates excel as role models in developing, leading and conducting research with continued education in the clinical care of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.

Fellows have the opportunity to work with several centers, such as the network of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Centers, SCI Support Clinics, and SCI Primary Care Teams.
Additionally, The Spinal Cord Injury Center at VA Palo Alto is closely affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, who has pioneered comprehensive care in Spinal Cord Injury to individuals throughout the country.

The fellowship program encourages and develops new leaders with a vision, commitment and the knowledge to advance the fellowship program into the 21st Century. Our program is based on the utilization of the “hub and spokes” design whereby the hub site takes the lead and allows us to utilize a national curriculum, a standardized strategy for the recruitment of fellows and a standard evaluation plan and local infrastructure.

The VA has been accredited since 1996 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), who have recognized SCIM as a subspecialty. The program is under the auspices of the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA).

We seek qualified candidates who have either:
  • Completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved subspecialty training in SCIM (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
  • Completed ACGME accredited residency training in another relevant core specialty are eligible to be considered if they display special interest in SCI.
