I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I would like to see some people's opinions on it. What medical specialty does everyone think has the best living conditions? (As far as actually allowing you to have a life outside of medicine?)

Also, what are the typical residency lengths for EM, IM, Peds, etc?

I'm very serious about becoming a Dr., but I think everyone needs a balance.

I would argue FP because you can set your own hours and take on as many patients as you wish (assuming you have your own practice).

Dermatology and Opthalmology have the reputation of high pay, low call, good hours.

Avg residencies:
ER - 4 yrs
Peds, FP- 3 yrs

Certainly each specialty has its own lifestyle pros and cons, but I'd say that the doc with the best life is the on who chose a specialty s/he enjoys. Don't decide to spend the next 30-40 years doing something you don't like just because it has better hours, pay, or whatever.

I agree with Dr. Mom

Medicine is a gift

If yopu like surgery and your on call for the next 20 years then do it.

Yeah right

But choose a field that you will love even on the most boring days.

just a correction to a previous poster.

EM residencies are overwhelmingly 3 years in length. There are some 4 year, but generally when people think EM it is 3 years.

Sorry to be the pre-allo kid breakin' on through to the other side, but what are FP and PM&R?
Even in the PM&R forum I can't figure out what PM&R means.

Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine or otherwise known as OMT. 🙂

In addition to some of the fields already mentioned pathology is a pretty good field.

You can specialize in OMT as an MD. It's a little harder, but it can be done. The best example I can think of is Miriam Mills, MD. She has a wonderful reputation as an OMT specialist in Peds. Check her out.
