Type of Research for R1 Schools

I know that top research medical schools value research as an EC much higher than, say, most state schools. However, does this mean they also would prefer to see bench/basic science research vs. public health or psychology research?

They're interested in knowing that you understand the scientific method and how to develop a hypothesis and test that hypothesis. The content of that research is not so important unless you're doing MD/PhD.

I suppose it's the same to research as D1 is to athletics, except you don't wear helmets in the lab.

Any research you do in undergraduate = whatever a P.I wants you to do. You usually don't have a ton of choice.
