I keep checking my status at UM, but only see that I am in a "Ranked List". What does this mean? I completed my app in Oct., and have heard nothing but what is on my status page. Anyone know what it means -- and can I find out my rank???

I'm not very sure, but I THINK that they first review their applicants, rank them, and then give interviews to the "top" ranked...then go down the list. I am almost sure that they won't tell you your ranking if you were to ask.

I've already been accepted to UM, but I never did check my status page, I just completed my app and waited. I suggest you should probably do something similar, otherwise you will be very stressed out. And to possibly relieve a little more stress, my application was complete in August (possibly July...don't remember) and I didn't hear anything until November. So you are still probably fine after completing your file in October.

Good Luck!

im an OOS whose been complete since end of august....im not even on the ranked list yet.....wtf

Undergoing File Evaluation:

Your file is complete and is currently being evaluated by the Admissions Committee for the possibility of an interview. Evaluation can be a lengthy process depending on the number of files concurrently under review. Check later to see when your file completes the evaluation process.

I'm pretty sure they put everyone on the ranked list before being granted an interview. I was complete in early September, on the ranked list by the end of September and then didn't get an invite until the end of December....

Soo....it tough waiting it out. But there is probably still hope and I know they just started interviewing the bulk of OOS people.

hi everyone,
i'm planning on april mcat in the hope of an october acceptance to um; is this feasible?
has anyone here gotten into um early in the application process?
peace. 🙂

I completed AMCAS the first day it was possible, completed UM's secondary within 2 weeks of them sending it to me and I got accepted in November.

I got in in mid-october. Completely doable IF you're a Florida resident. Florida residents are evaluated first I believe, and then they move on to OOS.

Yep!! I was accepted in Nov. AND keep in mind that everything got backed up due to Hurricane Wilma. As long as you submit everything early, and are a FL resident, you're good to go!

Thanks for the info people.
Congrats to all of you on making it into UM; hope to join you there next year.
Peace.
P.S. UM/JMH is really a great place. 😍

can someone point me to the application status URL. I had to format my computer and lost the link. Thanks in advance!

i finally got on the ranked list....thought they lost my file since i was complete in august...my question is how many OOS interviews are given out? i thought i read somewhere that it was less than a 100 but once you get an interview you've got a 2/3 shot of getting in........

When I interviewed, they told us that they usually interview ~100 OOS but it could change. And they also told us that getting interview means we have a very very good shot of getting accepted! good luck!

I thought I remembered Dr. Hinkley say that for the last couple years they've been trying to get 5 more OOS matriculants each year, so if I did hear that correctly it seems there would be 10 more out of state spots available compared to the current MSAR...which, in turn, means even more that are interviewed and accepted. I hope that's the case for you all. And just out of curiosity, for you OOSers would you be willing to pay 37 grand a year to go to UM if you got into your cheaper state school? I'm really just curious.

Hi MrBurns-

Just to answer your question. I am OOS and absolutely loved Miami. Although not everyone gets into their state schools, I have gotten into 2 of mine. Most likely, I will not be attending either of these even if I don't get into Miami.

To me, there are more important things than the extra $20,000 a year in tuition. I would much rather go to a school where I know that I will be happy for 4 years, will get amazing clinical experience, good residency match, and in a great location. Both of my state schools do not have the best facilities, they are in areas that have virtually no cultural life, and the students just did not seem as happy as other schools.

I do see the point of going to state schools, but I am also biased because I am lucky that I won't have to go into debt to finance medical school. So someone else's reasoning probably would be more helpful.
