Hi every one,
I know almost all of you study at the States, but i was wondering if anyone has ever had as interview at U of A (Alberta, Canada).
If you had, please let me know whem was it and what kind of questions did they ask. Because i have my interview in less than 20 days.
Also, I was wondering if i can get some information about dental schools at U.S. How hard is it to get in?
I have 4.0 GPA and i was wondering if i have a good chance to get in.
How should i register for American DAT?
Do they give scholarships to top students?
If no, is there anyway for me (I am from Canada) to get a loan or any other way to pay for my tuition?
Because here it's very hard to get in. I have a perfect GPA and i still don't know if i am going to get in.
Thank you very much.
Please, please, please, please give me some information, especially for my interview at U of A?

I had an interview at UBC. I'm pretty sure UofA will have a CDA structured interview like UBC so here goes...
They asked me a lot of questions about what I would do in certain situations. For example, they asked if I had experienced dishonesty and they asked what I did about it. To be honest, I don't think there is much to do to prepare for the CDA structured interview though. I hear U of A puts a large emphasis on GPA, so I'm sure you'll get in!!

Good luck,
lebaron

Hey,

Well I had an interview at U of A (twice) and both times they rejected me. If you have a 4.0 GPA then you have a good chance of getting in. U of A places HEAVY emphasis on GPA. To be honest...that's why most people of U of A are smart. But some lack (not all...) social skills. (As you can see..since U of A doesnt except personal essays...they don't know who this student is really and what he/she has accomplished out of school. The questions structured from U of A are all "hypothetical" questions where there is no right or wrong. There are NO questions (at least from the 2 interviews I went to) on if they ask if you have done any research, volunteer and stuff like that. They just want to know why you are applying to this school and what you look for in schools. Also, they will ask you STUPID questions like what is your best achievement and what have you done which you were not proud of and have thought of the later consequences greatly. U of A is UNLIKE any US school. The interview process is uptight and confrontational and very shallow. Also, they make it seem like that you should be the one who feels priviledged to have the interview rather than them treating you as a commodity. That is one thing U of A must improve in order to get better students. (Soorrry I must vent...for any U of A faculty reading this)..... Do not treat and look at the student during the interview as an idiot and as a lackey who should do anything in his power by sucking up to get into the school. The interviewers should embrace students who ask questions which question the schools integrity and strengths...that is a true student who is interested in your school will only ask how you are actually doing in terms of PATIENT POOL size, Board scores and rank of the school. Do not become offended and then think...."no we don't want this guy because it seems like he doesn't appreciate us and also I think we will give him a bad interview score". Are you kidding me!?!? A student who doesn't ask this question doesn't AT ALL know NOTHING about how dental schools differ in terms of quality, abilities and what the current school they are being interviewed has to offer to them. The students rather are just trying to apply to school and "hopefully" get their so called "dream job" and one day make a handful of cash. I bet you most interviewees at your school know JACK about what to expect from dental school (ie. the difficultly in comparison to medical school, the amount of work, and HOW MUCH medicine is actually involved in dentisty). Anyways...that's enough of my vent. I hope the interview goes well for you. I'm sure you will get in with a 4.0 GPA Inregards to US schools...most US schools accept Canadian DAT. But you have to apply to a "clearing house" called AADSAS. But you should apply early!! You are too late for this year. It is highly unlikelythat you will be accepted into a dental school. Let's say if you want to get in for FALL 2003....then apply this AUGUST 2002. US schools work on "rolling admission" and it is easier to get into certain to most US schools if you apply early.

I just wanted to say "THANK YOU" to Lebaron and Makebuleeve. I know it might be a little to late, but "thank you for your advices". I had my interview a couple month ago and it was very good. I also got my admission a week ago  !!
Again, thank you very much.
By the way, Lebaron, I just noticed that you are from U of C!! what year r u in (if you don't mind me asking that)? b/c I thought I might know you  .
anyway, "TAHNK YOU".
 :D

Hey Makebuleeve and Shouresh,

I just read both of your posts and feel as if I have absolutely no chance of getting into U of A. I currently go to U of C and have a GPA of around 3.3 (not good, I know). My DAT scores are ok: carving: 23; PAT: 17; Reading: 18. I have applied to the U of A many times before, but feel that the only reason that I am not offered an interview is mainly due to my marks.

I'm just wondering if you two could provide me with some insight as to where you stand in terms of your academic performance (i.e. GPA, DAT scores, etc) because I feel that with competition like yourselves, I should forget about denistry altogether (especially at the U of A--not that it's any easier elsewhere in Canada!).

And congratulations Shouresh for getting your admission! Good luck to you all!! :)

Shouresh,

Congratulations on your U of A acceptance! I just finished my 3rd year in CMMB (microbiology) at U of C. How about you? When did you write the DAT? I may have seen you!

Hi Lebaron,
I just finished my second year (Biology (biochemistry)). I wrote my DAT both on
Nov,2001, and Feb,2002. I was sitting in the front row (left side of the room). How about you?

Hi DeeDee,
trust me, you always have a chance as long as you really want it!! Your GPA and your DAT score are pretty good and I'm sure you'll get in  !! My overall GPA was 4.0 and my DAT score the first time: PAT 23, Carving:15(there was a mistake in my scoring), reading:16 (My English sucks!! I think you can tell by reading my posts!! :D )
second time: PAT 24, Carving: 28, reading:16. But they did not look at my second DAT score because it was after the deadline for transcripts. So, I really thing you have a good chance.
I can't wait till see your post with your "admission" news (I'm sure it's going to be soon and you'll get in).
cheers.

•••••Hi shouresh,

I wrote my DAT nov 2001 and was sitting in the front row on the right side of the room at the very end of the row by the wall.

DeeDee,

I see you go to the U of C and was wondering what year you're in (I may know you).

Hi Lebaron,

I just finished my fourth year of biological science major. How about you?

I feel like I'm sooo old! Shouresh just got into U of A after 2nd year! That's rare! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Anyway, I too wrote my DAT in Nov. 2001, but don't remember where I sat. Sorry.
