U of Arizona Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I'm applying to U of A too. What did you want to know? I'm an ASU grad and u of a is my in state school.

I am also applying to U of A, I received the sec app in the mail on 7/31. Good luck to everyone applying.

whats on the secondary - is it essays, or just residency stuff?

The secondary's pretty easy. It does have a whole page about residency, such as where you file taxes and voting. It also asks about whether you want the tucson or phoenix campus for third and fourth year, and you can explain your preference. They want three letters of rec too.

2ndary seems easy enough...
where else are you applying?
also, how does this WICHE stuff work?
are AZ residents considered as 'instate' for other wiche schools, eg new mexico?
or is it an intermediate classification between n.m. residents and non-wiche residents?

Hello guys, I have been trying to meet poeple from AZ out here, especially from ASU. Anyway I will be taking the MCAT in April 2005. I am majoring in clinical lab sciences.
Would you mind sharing your stats?
Thanks

also what other school are you applying to and why?

The secondary should take you three minutes tops. They just want to make sure you are a resident of Arizona or a WICHE student and like purple said to pick a clinical location.

The average stats are something like 30 MCAT 3.5 GPA but it's not about the numbers (sure everywhere says that, but it's true here).

If you have any other questions fire away.

what are the important factors then?
how quick are they in turnaround? imean amcas to secondary, secondary to interview, and interview to decision?
(im assuming youre a current student there)
was az your top choice?
everyone i talk to seems to hate tucson...what do you think?

Rather than numbers they look at the person. What experiences you've had, especially clinical. I don't know how anyone could truly know they want to go into medicine without having experienced what it's really like. They look at your character, your motivations and try to see who you really are. If you have decent numbers, are going into medicine for the right reasons and are a good person you should have no problem getting in.

The admissions people are good about getting things out in a timely manner, probably because they only have to deal with ~500 applications. I received my secondary 4 days after I was verified by AMCAS, interviewed in late September (first day of interviews) and was accepted in late January. There are three days when acceptances are sent out; mid-January, Mid-February and Mid-March. So interviewing early is not really an advantage.

U of A was my first choice and I'm glad I stayed. My class is filled with awesome people, everyone is incredibly supportive, you can't beat the price and so far I'm loving it. I got into numerous schools that were ranked higher, but I don't think any of them would have been a better fit for me.

Tucson isn't the most exciting place but we make due. It is great if you are outdoorsy, plenty of hiking, camping and rock-climbing around. You can head down to 4th Ave and party it up if you are inclinded. Arizona basketball is always a great time. It's probably a blessing that there isn't too much to do, less distracting you from studying. I've been here the last 9 years so I've grown used to the laid back atmosphere and have no problem calling Tucson home. Hope that answers your questions, let me know if you have more.

I'm another applying there. I'd like to stay in Tucson.

thanks for the thorough post arod...
good info.

I must admit, I applied to u of a only because it's my state school and sort of as a fall back. I don't really feel like it would work for me yet the more I think about it the more I'm thinking maybe I'm stupid for feeling that way. I've never talked to any doctor (I know quite a few) who has said negative things about u of a and all the students I've talked to love it as well. True the price is tough to beat. I wouldn't mind living in Tucson and all my family and my wife's family is here in Arizona.
Anyway, I guess my real question is, would I be limited in what I can do in the future if I go to u of a versus some other school (assuming I get into one of the more recognized programs I applied to)? I want to do academic medicine or be associated with a medical school in some way. I hope to be able to balance patient care and research and I like the idea of being involved in academia. Would my future be jeopardized by choosing u of a? I know their match list isn't like other schools but if I work hard there, I know I can match into any program. I guess I just want all the opportunities available in medical school ie. travel abroad, research, good clinical exposure, etc.
your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Arod, or anyone else whos been to U of A : How is the relationship with the undergrad? Can we have use of the Student rec center and other undergrad facilities? Also, I've always heard that U of A takes good care of its students, is this true?
Thanks

about the LORs: any 3, or 3 science profs or some other config?

The three letters are from professionals who know you and can attest to your qualifications for a career in medicine. You can use a premed committee letter as one if you want and include two additional. It also says that additional letters beyond the three will not be considered. There are forms included to waive access to the letters which you can give to the writers or to your undergrad to include with them.

El Chavo, if you work hard enough you can theoretically get into any residency you want. If you want a competitive residency at a top institution you'd probably be better served going to an elite school for the simple fact that they place more students in those types of residencies. Every year there are people here who match into top programs so it definitely is possible. There is ample opportunity to conduct research, if you find someone investigating something you find interesting you'd have no problem getting into the lab. If you want to travel abroad between your first and second year that is also do-able. If you want clinical exposure early you can get involved in CUP, or start watching surgeries, or anything else that interests you. Everyone bends over backwards for the medical students here and will help you do nearly anything you want. So, would you be jeopardizing your future going here? I doubt it, but while on your interview parade see what every school has to offer and see where you'd be happiest and most likely to succeed.

Purple, as part of your tuition you pay to use the rec center on main campus. However, you don't have access until main campus starts classes, so until August 16th (when main campus starts this year) you have to pay to use the rec center. Also during winter break and summer you'd have to pay. There is also a small gym in the hospital that you can use for $15/month if you want to avoid the crowds at the rec. I don't know much about the other facilities, but I'd guess you'd have access to just about anything you want over on main campus. As for the treating the students well that is definitely true. It's a little scary how well they treat us. The faculty is always willing to spend extra time with you to make sure you are keeping up and understanding. The auxilliary staff is willing to go the extra mile to help you with anything you need. You'd never guess that we're on the bottom of the totem pole. Much to the chagrine of residents who come from the East Coast we even get to wear long white coats. It's amazing how being treated with respect will make the experience so much better.

does anyone know if u of az has any grad programs with january admissions?
no one there seems to be answering their phoens

I am just curious. How are the med students treated during their clinical rotations?

thanks for the info, arod, I appreciate it

yea arod, good stuff... youre such a stud

It's my pleasure to help out. I know how crazy and stressful the application process is so I feel for you guys. As for the clinical rotations question I'm not in a position to really answer that since I haven't gone through it. However the people I've talked to really enjoy their 3rd year.

Just a side note, they announced today that they're planning on expanding to Phoenix and offering 1st and 2nd year there. I don't know how soon that'll happen but here is the link to the press release if anyone is interested.

I interviewed last Monday. It was laid back and actually a short day, only about 4 hours. We only did one interview on site as the other will be with a community physician. I spoke with a friend of mine who is a second year and several students who turned down offers from higher ranked schools to go to the relaxed atmosphere of U of A. They all seemed very satisfied.
For me, scheduling the community physician interview has been a pain, so I haven't done that yet.
congrats on your interview.

If you don't mind, what type of questions did they ask you? Were they close to what people have posted on the Interview Feedback section on the main site?

I just got mine as well. October 26th is when I interview.

I had my interview last Tuesday, and I feel like it went well. It was very laid back- my interviewer said he wanted to structure it more as a conversation than an interview. I was asked very few of the typical med school interview questions. My interviewer was a physician, and asked me questions about my family, what I do when I am "not serious," if I ever have embarassing experiences...that sort of thing. I enjoyed talking to students and the tour of the campus- it just feels like it could be a really great fit.

its great that i have found people from arizona. I was thinking of going for midwestern university(phx, az) but i finally decide that i would like to go to U of A. i am not sure when u of a will have a phx location, like the other person said of u of a expanding. currently i am here in tempe, arizona and have lived here in phx almost my entire life. so tucson seems like a smaller place than phx, but i think i can get use to it.

i will soon have a BA(graphic/web design) in Dec and i will start working on getting the premed classes, so i will be doing the post bac at ASU or at a community college. i should be done with the pre req in less than 2 yrs and i will be force to go through the gilde or transition yr. so i will be taking the MCAt on april 06, don't think its a good idea to take it in april 05 or aug 05 since i will just be starting taking chm, bio, phy class on jan 05.

also i need to start volunteering at a clinic or hospital, i was thinking of volunteering or work as a interpreter(i speak spanish), have any of you done this? all hospital no longer want volunteers to be interpreter and they had just gone to paid interpreters. i was told that i need to learn some medical terms, but no one seems to know where these schools are. should i work or volunteer in another area or work as a interpreter? will med school be okay with this.

Thought I would bring this thread back for U of A applicants as we wait to hear back in a couple of weeks, and for anyone to post updates.

Good idea - nice to have a group to celebrate/sulk with 🙂 hopefully the former.
I'll definately be posting if I hear good news!

Good luck everyone :luck:

Does anyone know the estimated date for the opening of the new med school in PHX?

The Daily Wildcat said the first class would be 2006.

That's ridiculously awesome. That's my planned app year.

I'll add my name to the list of U of A applicants waiting to hear back...

Supposedly the new school is to open in 2006 with a class of about 25 people. I guess they want to start small and work into a full program. I'm interested to see how this whole thing works out - i really hope it doesn't turn into a flame war with both schools trying to compete for the resources (and $$$ of course). guess we'll find out soon enough...

any other u of a applicants out there?

Yeah I am pretty sure they send out their acceptances in both email and regular mail. Best of luck!

Just got the good news via email. Check your inbox (as if you weren't doing that obsessively anyway). 😀

Good luck, guys!

I was wondering if anyone else heard back. Also, what does the E-mail say. Thanks.

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone else got in; Also where else have you guys interviewed and if you have already been accepted somewhere else. I have been accepted to AZCOM. I want to stay in AZ, so I only applied to UoA and AZCOM. I hope UoA works out. Good luck to everyone else.

Thank man 😉 Can't wait to get started next year, although haven't decided where I am going to be.

I guess there are not a lot of UofA folks on SDN. Anyone else heard?

PM me if you seriously want the full text the letter.

And FYI, I applied all over the country, 27 schools in all. So I am exhausted and broke. 9 interviews, 5 acceptances, more rejections, and a whole slew of withdrawals. Not to mention a few schools that have completely forgotten me...

Hey man, I was wondering if you don't mind, can you share your stats (including institutions attended)? I myself is an ASU student in prepation to take the MCAT in April and apply this year.

OK... But you are going to have to take them with a grain of salt because I am a non-trad with 7 years of engineering research experience and 15 publications (with an interest in indigent care)...

See: http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=1496

Stats aren't the end all, be all to say the least... Just read the posts about people with awesome stats who aren't getting in this year. I took several post-bacc classes at ASU (not included in GPA) where I got all A's, which may have helped.

Weren't we supposed to hear about waitlist and rejections in March? Because this was posted on the U of A website:

Announcements
January, 2005

The first list of accepted applicants was sent out on January, 26th via certified mail and e-mail. The remaining acceptance lists will be sent in late February and early March. All applicants will be informed of their status in early April.

If you intend to live the rest of your life in Arizona, but currently a Florida/Out of State resident do you have a shot in getting a secondary, or an interview?

Arizona currently only takes in-state residents and people from WICHE states. So no, a Florida resident should not apply.
