Hi Everybody! My name is Jason, I'm the first year (2023) class president! I have made an unofficial facebook group for you guys to join and talk with each other, moderated by myself, the SAVMA President, and the SAVMA President-Elect. Link is here
I joined the group but wasn’t able to copy and paste the google doc for the questionnaire. Any way you can post the link?

Hi! I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I wanted to ask if anyone knows about movement in the oos waitlist? I am hopeful to get accepted to the university! Also, congratulations to all of you!

I was pulled from the OOS waitlist for 2022! I know of at least two other people who were pulled for our class too. You won’t hear anything until at least a week after the deadline because the form has to be mailed in and only needs to be postmarked by the deadline, so they usually wait a week to start notifying anyone to make sure everyone’s acceptances are in and they know how many seats are available.
I think a bit further up in the thread batsenecal said how many seats they still were waiting to accept?

For my in-state they said they are hoping by this coming Monday they will be able to put calls out and start getting a movement on the list! I am on the waitlist there still in hopes they'll pull me off so I can pay 100,000 less in tuition haha

I am glad to hear that! Yes, having 100,000 less to pay is totally worth it. I hope I get pulled of too! Have you heard anything for oos? Wishing luck for the both of us!

Yes I am in at Illinois and will be attending here if I don't get pulled off my in-state! These are the only two I applied to :)

Hi all,

My husband has an OOS offer for UIUC. We haven't sent in a deposit yet though since he is waitlisted at IS school.
I think he will make his own account here eventually to connect with fellow vet students, but I am stuck at home due to the COVID 19 situation so thought I would join the conversation.
Is anyone able to give some insight to the process for petitioning for in-state residency after 1 year? I will be working full-time (if) when we make the move to IL and we will both be changing our DLs, voter registration, car registration, etc.

I've been reading through this thread the past couple of days and it is refreshing to see how helpful and happy everyone is! Seems like you all have a wonderful and supportive community :)

Sorry for the delayed response, haven't been on here in quite some time. I gained in state residency after 1 year because my husband works here full time. We changed all documentation/addresses to here right after moving, like you plan to, which is good.

You can find all the requirements here: Residency Status Requirements - UAPS

And the form to fill out and what else to bring: Petition for Determination of Residency Status - UAPS

Basically, I filled out the form above, and brought it to the registrar's office along with a copy of a bank statement, lease agreement, utility bill, marriage certificate, driver's licenses, tax return, car insurance, and paystub from his job. It was a simple process, in my opinion. They did ask for further documentation (I think it was the paystub I forgot the first time), so just be prepared to make a lot of copies and provide everything you could even think of, even if it seems excessive it's better to have more documentation than less. I think it took a few day to get an email saying whether they needed more documents, then a couple more weeks to receive an email that I qualified for in-state tuition. I applied after my first year, due to the requirements, and we did not live in Illinois long before I started school.

Does U of I offer any discounts on veterinary care/preventatives/ etc for being a veterinary student?

I will say if you need a specialist, U of I is much cheaper than my specialist was in NY state for a cardiologist for my cat. So if you're from OOS, or a more expensive area, it's kind of relative. A cardiologist appt in NY was $500, and I paid $250 with my 50% employee discount at my clinic. At school, with my 20% discount, I pay less than $150 for his yearly cardio check up. It was pretty exciting to me, lol.

Accepted students who are going to be moving: Are you guys signing leases like normal or holding off until we hear more about this COVID situation? I’m nervous to sign a lease too soon. I’ve heard some universities in general are discussing not having in person classes until 2021.

New 4th years were told last week they expect us to start in person clinical on August 3rd! That is predicated on the governor lifting the stay at home order by then, but the school's current plan seems to be to have in person shenanigans for fall.

When you click the ‘Big Sib/Little Sib’ survey it takes you to the First Year Questionnaire.
I think it's the correct one! Because it's asking about what you are looking for in a class of 2023 big

Hi! So I’m currently looking at some apartments around the area. Due to COVID-19 I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to fly and visit and tour the places. I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Gentry Square, The Legends, or Windsor West. Any input would be really helpful! Thanks!

You might have better luck posting to the free or for sale Facebook page. I dont think any of us current students have lived most of those places. @SkiOtter do you live at Windsor west?

Hi I live at Windsor west! I actually toured all three
Management is great and maintenance always gets anything done really fast. They take really good care of the apartments and do preventative maintenance and pest control multiple times a year (I think quarterly?). I’ve lived here for the past two years and am not planning on moving for the rest of vet school

I chose Windsor west over the legends because I wanted a garage for the winter because I have a bad back and would rather not have to scrape my car off in the mornings or slip on ice that hasn’t been salted yet. Supposedly the legends was building units with a garage but they were still under construction when I was looking. I preferred those two over Gentry square because they were just a bit nicer inside the apartments than Gentry square was for like the same price iirc, but I don’t know if they’ve done any renovations in the past two years or not.
I know a 2016 or 17 graduate who lived at Gentry square and liked it.
One thing about Windsor west is they don’t have a fitness facility in their clubhouse, like the other two do but there’s a YMCA across the street.

There’s a possibility the leasing offices of the three places would do a video/FaceTime tour for you if you asked about it!

Do most students get the rabies vaccine series done at McKinley? The admissions website seemed to suggest that proof of rabies must be submitted before school started. Anyone have experience or advice for the timeline of it?

I got it done there, but that's because my previous insurance didnt cover it. If your insurance covers it, do it wherever they will do it. Proof of rabies is needed prior to 601, which starts in October, unless you do the Wildlife Clinic, which will require it before you start working with mammals.

Wow, email just came out that it seems like no invites will be coming from the waitlist this year - congrats to all who got accepted, hopefully will see you as class of 2025!

Last week, our weekly email from the Dean's office mentioned that the class was full with 131 students. Didnt say anything at the time since everything is changing so quickly right now. Good luck to those on the waitlist on either going to other schools or reapplying!

Hey again 2024! Just reposting that I am looking for a new roommate from August 1 through till May 2021. I live at Hessel on the Park in a 2 bed/1.5 bath townhouse (Floorplans). Rent and all amenities have not gone over 1115/month (557/person) while I've lived there. I'm fine with any pets other than cats due to cat allergies. The townhouse is 2 miles from vet med, across from Hessel Park, and the clubhouse has a pool and a gym. Let me know if you're interested!

I was looking at the electives available and was wondering how many electives we are required to take every year. I’m trying to decide if I should take an elective the first semester or not. I’ve been out of school for about a year and a half so was thinking about not taking an elective first semester just so I could better acclimate. Thanks!

You just need 8 credits of electives by the time you enter clinics as a 4th year. It comes out to just under 1 elective per didactic quarter. I had probably 5 or 6 quarters where I took 2 or 3. So if you want to ease into it, dont worry about it just yet.

So we are only in each elective for 8 weeks?

ZooMed is also a VERY low key and easy elective credit. Just show up for an hour and listen to the lecturer go through a case (and throw out ideas if you want) and then take a like 1 question quiz at home on compass. Im not planning on going into zooMed and I took it so you definitely don’t have to be going that route.

But if you’d rather not take any electives that quarter, it’s totally fine and you’ll definitely be able to make up for it later on.

I was looking at electives for the fall as well and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on the research elective? I've done a lot of undergrad research and would like to get involved with research again.
