Does anyone going to the University of Louisville this August (or is currently a student there for that matter) already have a stethoscope? If so, what kind? Will there be a cheap way to buy a good one at school in bulk for the whole class? Is one type/model/make required? etc. etc. etc. I've heard the Littmann Cardiology III is a good one. Any hints? Should I get one now or wait and see?

I'm not at U of L, but I just bought a Master Cardiology after testing the others from classmates. Littmans were definitely the best, it was just that the sounds from the Master were noticably louder than that from the Cardiology III. It's only $10 or so more too (reddingmedical.com). The combined bell and diaphragm is a great feature too (IMHO).

at my school we had an equipment fair. the steths were discounted by about 60 dollars from what they were being sold at the bookstore. perhaps you should wait until school starts to find out what you need to buy.

You will probably have an equipment fair and everyone will buy their instruments so that you get a discounted price. This is what happens at UK, and the prices are better than what you'd find anywhere else. Also, the Welch-allyn and Littman reps were reps for the region, so I'd assume these same guys would come to U of L.

Thanks everyone. So which one is the best?

Classic II

It's light, inexpensive and does the trick. I've spent 3 yrs as a cot monkey (EMT) riding in the back of ambulances listening to breath sounds, Korotkoff sounds, bowel sounds, etc. barreling down the road at 55 mph. I've used all the different types of ears and fnd this one to be the best. The Cardiology models are heavy and have very short lengths. They get stolen a lot b/c of their price (in other words, you won't be able to forget them anywhere b/c when you come back they'll be gone). Do a search, I know this has been talked about before.

Oh, by the way, I'll be joining you in Louisville this August. I would save the money that you'd spend on a Cardiology II and put it towards the outrageously priced PDA that they're giving us (look at your bill -- it's listed under Technology Fee)

See you in a few weeks. Good times.

Nice to see another fellow classmate. So what kind of PDA are we getting, errr... buying? I already have a 2 year old Handspring Visor Deluxe so I hope it's a serious upgrade.
