U. of Miami or Albert Einstein

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
this is a good one.

would you like to be near manhattan?

do you care about the beach?

do you prefer four seasons or being really really hot half the year and in very pleasant weather the rest of the year?

do you have a car?

Miami will probably be cheaper. Dr. Hinkley told us that all OOS students got the OOS portion of the tuition waived last year (approximately $10,000.) This year might be different, because they are trying to get more OOS students in the program. You should call and ask.

jac is that you? you should come to miami with me! 🙂

einstein is soooo much better of a school, miami is goin downhill, not to mention you need to know spanish to go there for the clinical years...

You do not need to know Spanish to go to UM. Not everyone in Miami is a non-English speaker, and there is a huge staff of translators available to assist doctors, nurses and med students. Sure, there are many Hispanics in the city but you shouldn't misrepresent the clinical years😡.

Miami is going downhill? you are an uneducated *****, clearly. miami just picked up the chairman of internal medicine from michigan, which last time i checked was ranked #10. i hate you idiots on this board who speak in such a matter of fact way without knowing any facts.

Miami is better especially with all the hot chicks weeeeeeee

At what point does your posting of fiction in threads relating to UM become trolling?

1. Your well-reasoned analysis of which school is going downhill is a bit off. My *slightly* more reasoned analysis on med school trends is here. It might give you a better idea as to which schools will be going downhill and which won't be (hint: you got it wrong).

2. You spit out the same nonsense about Spanish in another thread. I disputed the BS then. Hopefully I won't have to do it again.

3. I have no idea why you'd make an effort to intentionally mislead UM applicants. Oh wait, yeah I do. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 7).

These pre-med gunners are amazing. I fear for this guy's future med school classmates.

Biggest load of trash I have ever read.

Albert Einstein is an amazing school. U of M is also a great school, but if I had to choose, I would probably pick Einstein. Its just a personal preference. I really love NYC compared to Miami-- yes you have the beach and stuff, but NYC is a city with much more going on than clubbing and partying (I am from around the area). I also hate warm weather all the time and enjoy the cold, which is another reason. I know Einstein is ranked quite higher than U of M (even though I think USNEWS rankings are about 95% crap) but I know Einstein has a sterling reputation among the medical community.

For you, I feel at this point it is a question of your personal preference; going to either of them will not hinder any real opportunities for residency or whatever else you would like to pursue. Good luck.

Regarding Miami going down hill (or rather not)... they recently snatched a bunch of high-ups from Duke Medical School as well...

Exactly. Miami got a brand new human genetics department from Duke, and also got some other faculty, including a new Dean of Clinical services at the FAU campus. Dean Goldschmidt is also from Duke and he is bringing alot of his people from Duke down here. In reality, Miami is most likely going UPHILL, not downhill.

Boris,

Thank you for your post. Seems like you did a lot of research on med schools. What is your opinion on Miami vs. Albert Einstein?

C-A-N-E-S! CANES! CANES! CANES! 😀 :hardy: 😍 😍

ill hav you know that i actually interviewed at UM and withdrew my app there already, thank you very much so dont think im trying to improve waitlist movement or anything b/c im certainly not gunnerish like that...but that earlier post does make it seem like i got pwned....but just in my personal interview, i got a horrible impression of the school and decided any other school would be better for ME versus UM...

Horrible impression? hmm...elaborate please....what did you dislike about UM? Perhaps that you didn't get in for starters? A low-tier waitlist spot can scar your outlook like that, I understand. Obviously with your numbers "far higher than their average" you should have been a shoe-in, right? I guess interviewers dislike an arrogant, better-than-you attitude just as much as your future classmates will.

I am by no means going to jump out and say my school is the best in the country, but I'm not going to listen to someone trash it for no reason either. It is a great school. Is it at the top of the US news rankings? No, but I honestly believe that's meaningless crap anyway. Research funding does not a good doctor make. It is certainly not going downhill, I can assure you of that.
Thank you Boris for elaborating more on the subject.

People who come on these boards and start giving people bad impressions of schools they have beef with for whatever reason based on no good premise whatsoever piss me the F off. Seriously.

Where are you headed next year? If ANY school is better for you than UM, then I suggest you give up any acceptance you may be holding and hand your seat to another applicant who appreciates it more than you. I hear Guadalajara medical school still has some empty seats. With your superior numbers, you may even be top of your class there! 🙂

To the OP: Sorry, I can't give you a solid argument one way or the other. UM has some weaknesses, and lots of strengths, namely clinicals and some other factors. PM if you want to hear more details. I've heard good things about einstein, but do not know enough about them to say anything else as far as comparisons go. Someone will likely do a much better job than I at this.

I hear you get all Jewish holidays off at einstein? That's pretty cool. That's all I know.

this is actually the first time i heard this (i missed the financial aid talk due to my interview schedule). i am really hoping this happens again this year (free money is always nice).

i dont really have much experience with albert einstein as i didnt get an interview there. from what i know about miami though, its a school that really provides a solid medical education. with the 2nd busiest hospital in the country you will definitely see alot of things that you may or may not be able to see in einstein. also, i heard the immigrants to miami bring in all sorts of crazy things that you probably wont see anywhere else.

Can you Miami students verify this tuition waiver from Dr. Hinkley?

Just curious, which UM did you interview? According to your previous post, you were rejected by Boca and still waiting for Miami. You are like saying "I quit" after getting fired. And if your stats are that great, why are you even talking about these schools, shouldn't you be interviewing at Ivy's?

WHat is is up with UM-Miami, they are ridiculous, i came into this whole ordeal a huge hurricane fan thinkin I would probably end up at UM, but as this application cycle has run its route, i interviewed at UF, FSU, and USF all of them fairly early too as well as a number of OOS interviews AND I also got a Sept! interview from UM-boca branch (which i really dont want to go to), my numbers are above average for UM-Miami, my clinical experieneces and letters are solid and i call the office and they are like you have been reviewed and we are waiting and im like waiting for what? ive been complete for 4 months now, and then i send an emial to dr. hickley and he never responds, with all deceny you could atleast respond....the hurricanes were my favorite ncaa team goin into this, if this cycle ends like this....you can beat ill be the biggest anti-hurricane fan on this planet....

Personally I think Einstein may be better for some people, but that does not mean UM is a bad school, as a matter of fact it is a great school for a lot of people.

i admit, i did get rejected post-int boca branch, withdrew miami branch

Too bad, the interview day for Miami campus was awesome. Hinkley, and the admissions staff were awesome. The lunch was good too.

Miami is a great school!

Just look at their match list and the clinical experience is top notch. Plus the location is unbeatable.

I am sure Einstein is a good school as well. I can't really compare the two as I know very little about Einstein.

I know nothing about these schools but suspect that a Californian would be happier in Florida than in NYC... OP, you haven't said much about if you care for either environment more over the other?

I care for (in order of importance):

1. Quality of education and reputation of program
2. Living environment, city, climate etc
3. Expenses

Number 1 carries the most weight for me.

I am wondering the same thing right now - UMMSM or AECOM... old ortho, did you ever find out more info about this? And if you don't mind me asking, what did you decide? I have my family in Miami, so Miami is veryyy enticing right now, but just like you, the quality of the education and reputation of the program are my primary concerns...

I chose Miami and is very happy there. Having said that, Einstein is a very good program. It is a personal decision. I just PM you for more details.

Good luck RSA! Either way I don't think you can really go wrong, but it's a tough choice. I think I'll end up choosing based on where I'll be happiest with my life in general. Good luck with your choice! 👍

MS4 from Miami here, I had the exact same choice and I have never looked back. Miami is great medical school that is only getting better. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions.

Wow I just realized this was the old thread from few years ago. Thought I was posting in a new thread. woops!!!!

Yep. We established that he was a troll a long time ago.
