It's very likely I'll be attending U.Va this fall, and I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the Charlottesville area. I'm from Oregon, and only visited very briefly for my interview. Is it possible to find a decent 2bdrm apartment real close to campus for less than $800/month? Anyone know any complexes to look for? The resources online seem to be very limited. I'm also curious about the curriculum, and free time. Anyone who's a student there could answer this I'm sure. I noticed a lot of days are 8-5 basically... do you really need to attend all of the lectures? It seems like with an 8-5 class schedule everyday, you'll be studying all night and have no free time. Any help at all from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a 4th year undergrad at UVa and here's the breakdown on apartments . . .

You can live far(ish) away (and by this I mean a few miles) and have pretty reasonable rents. I'm in a pretty nice 3 bedroom at Eagles Landing apartments and we each pay $420/month, cable included. The problem with this is parking is a hassel. Figure $300/year to park at the stadium and take a bus or a 15 minute walk to the med center. You can park near the basketball arena for much less but the bus ride is longer. Then there's always get to campus early (before most hospital staff) and nab a street spot on Jefferson Park Ave for free.

Option B is to live on Jefferson Park Ave or near 14th street. JPA apartments tend to have parking readily available but can get pricey. I don't have any firm prices except a 4 bedroom 2 bath at 1815 JPA (nice, new building) is something like $1750/month + utilities. But it's possible you could find a nice 2 bedroom for $900ish/month. Of course there are many houses for rent that are dumps with like 5 bedrooms that a bunch of people can cram into.

Now, 14th street is off "the corner" the little bar area near the med center. This area can be moderately pricey and places tend not to be as nice, but you are really close to the med center and bars/restaurants, parking is extremely limited tho and can be a real hassel.

Guess that's about all I can suggest. If you want to look at spec complexes a little further away, Eagles Landing, Jefferson Ridge, and Sterling are all along Old Lynchburg near 5th street, approx 2 miles from campus. Closer to campus check out 1800 JPA or 1815 JPA (if you can find some more roommates). Not as sure about 14th street area apartments.

i lived off of jpa (kent terrace) in a 2BR that cost $700/month
great location...right in front of a bus stop that went straight to the medical school (2 stops away, about 3 minutes), plus the bus came around every 10-15 minutes
walking wasn't bad, i'd say about 10 minutes
parking on the street can be a pain, so i'd try to get a place that has a parking lot
best part was that i signed the lease in august (i heard that the undergrads sign their leases in october of the previous year)

the only downside was that the place was old...not a dump, but a far cry from brand new places like 1815 jpa)
because of this, the insulation was terrible and our power bill was $220/month during the winters

You can definitely find apartments cheap and near Grounds, but like hustleandflow said, you sacrifice some quality. A decent price is probably around $400/bedroom, but there is huge variation depending on utilities, newness, etc.

I'd recommend finding somewhere that's walking distance to the med school. Parking is a big fat pain in Charlottesville, especially in the hospital complex. Check UniversityOffGrounds.com or brac.com, they both have lots of listings.
