Guys,
I'm worried about something...I applied to Western recently and well, the core pre-med chemistry classes at UCLA and UCLA Extension (both on the quarter system) don't add up to 8 units each for orgo and inorganic...The problem is, some classes are even a BLEND of orgo and inorganic and again, we're on the quarter system. So I wasn't sure how to portion these out in my primary application...When you add up the inorganic chem classes (converted to semester units) it comes out to be like 6.7 semester units (depending on how you portion out the units- as inorganic or organic- you will short change one or the other)...But I know Western gets a lot of UCLA applicants and that the UCLA core pre-med classes are accepted by MD and DO programs nationwide as fullfilling pre-med requirements for chem. The thing is, I called them (Western), and they said, well, we'll just go by what AACOMAS calculates. Again, I'm worried.....Anyone know anything about this?THANKS!

I'm not from CA, but I know that in semester system, you must take 2 Physics classes. In quarter system like UC, you will take 3 Physics classes. If you only take 2 in quarter system, then it's not enough. Did you take every pre-med class at UC or some at UC, some at the other ?

4 units on the semester system is equivalent to about 2.7 quarter units.

If a school goes by the semester system, let's say for chemistry, you only need to take 2 classes of 4 "semester" units each. (4 x 4 = 8)

If your school is in the quarter system, you need to take 3 classes of 2.7 "semester" units each. ( 2.7 x 3 = 8.1)

The undergraduate general chem series (3 qtrs) will be accepted as "inorganic" requirement. For organic chem, you need to take 3 qtrs of it as well.

Thanks for your responses guys. My main concern was the fact that some organic and inorganic classes/labs are blended in one class at UCLA and it makes it confusing. However, I received an Email from the Director of Admissions (Western) confirming she is familiar with UCLA's core pre-med chemistry classes and that as long as the TOTAL units of all chemistry and BIOCHEMISTRY classes equals 16 semester units, you're OK 🙂
