Hello!

I was wondering of anyone had taken any of the self paced UC Berkeley classes online. I'm specifically looking at the genetics class. I called and chatted a bit with the registrar for the UC Berkeley distance learning, and it sounds like a "normal" online class where you have contact with the prof and postings, and a proctored final exam, but wanted to see if anyone had done this and what they thought...

thanks😀

I'm actually currently enrolled in UC Berkeley's extension genetics course....after my undergraduate school being completely stupid in helping me fulfill this requirement.

So, thus far, I really like it, but probably can't give that much info. You have 6 months to complete it once you start, I started around April and got a good two lessons in, but then found out that I didn't get into vet school for the '08 round so wasn't in as much of a hurry to complete it by June and then my "regular" college classes were taking up quite a bit of time. Heh, it's really funny you should mention it because I just began working on my 3rd assignment today.

The "homework" assignments really aren't that bad at all, I got A's on the first two. I have no idea how the final exam will be, but I think as long as you follow the advice (ie. work on the study questions at the end of the chapters) and do the assignments it shouldn't be too bad.

if you want to know more, you can PM me and I can give you a sampling of what the HW assignments are like before you enroll.

Edit: And also, I know that at least one vet school accepts this course for the genetics requirement (Michigan State), and I would imagine others do as well, but you might just want to double-check with the schools you want to apply to. No sense spending money if it's not going to be accepted as fulfilling the prereq.

I thought the human physiology was very easy but the immunology was pretty tough. I actually ended up not needing it and dropped it. I haven't taken genetics through them though.

i took genetics in the classroom with mary alice yund. she was a good, reasonable instructor. i know she also taught online sections. a little bit pricey, but worth it for the convenience and credit.

I took Calculus online-- v. weird professor/grading system

I'm currently taking composition & lit online-- again weird prof w/weird grading, but whatever...

I took Genetics in the classroom with M.A.Yund and thought she was pretty good. It's a rigorous class but pretty reasonable exams/grading.

My big problem is actually *doing* the online classes 🙁 I had to rush through the end of my Calc class to get it finished, and I'm pushing pretty hard to finish the stupid composition class before my time is up. But that's just me... if you don't give me a deadline, and it's not something i'm super interested in, i'm not great at getting it done.

Thanks for the physio report, I'm planning on doing that one at the end of the summer (after GRE hopefully)

PS- I have found most of the UC Berkeley Extension profs to be *quite* strange, both online and in class. Which is okay for me most of the time but really turns some people off.

I'm considering taking this course online (or in person). Can you tell me your thoughts after having completed the course? How were the exams, how was the homework, how was the grading, etc?

I have heard horrible this professor. Could you tell me a little more as I am considering taking the UCB Extension course with her. Thank you!

Holy thread bump batman.

I don't think chordy4 is going to get back to you, unfortunately. That original post is 8 years old at this point.

Thanks so much. I thought I would give it a try. I'm trying to find more recent information on the courses at UCB and haven't found much. Thank you!

I took the UCB online biochem course. I did a LOT of learning through my independent resourcing and khan academy on you-tube. The professor was looking for incredibly detailed assignments and it was hard to include that level of detail from just reading an intro book. I found myself regurgitating the textbook for a somewhat decent grade.
It was convenient with my work schedule, but overall a tough course. An online lecture would have been nice instead of: read this and write an essay about that. And it was rather expensive. So meh.... It's doable.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I am taking a physiology course that is "teach yourself" now and I don't feel like I am learning as much as I could with a lecture. I am trying to find a good Genetics course online but I haven't found a good option. Thanks again!
