California medical students and college students have always enjoyed a superb education from the University of California at a cheap tuition. But recently, the state's $38 billion deficit has forced the state government to impose drastic budget cuts at the expense of the UC's quality of education.
Here's the latest report from the President of the University of California on the state's latest budget cut proposal. Governor Davis does not intend to impose any more budget cuts. But if the Legislature is to have its way, there will be more budget cuts in the future.
Despite the tuition hike and increased fees, the UC's are still great schools for the price. But if this trend continues, the difference in tuition between a UC and a comparable private school will be nil. I'm not bagging on the UC schools because I am a UCSD medical student myself. But this is something to consider if you are choosing a UC over a private or out-of-state school for its price.
