Hey guys, just wanted to get some thoughts on chances for setting secondaries / interviews at UCSD, UCLA, and UCSF for an out of state with the following stats:

521 MCAT
4.0 Science GPA (3.98 other)
Significant undergraduate basic science research, including 2 publications (review article and book chapter)
Significant involvement in the arts
Not much volunteer work
~40 hours shadowing

"Not much volunteer work" will hurt you a lot. You need to have something very special to compete with so many very qualified IS applicants.

Without going into too much detail, my other activities (the performing arts) were very intense, as was my research - this was where all of my time was. I have a hard time believing that the UCs - or any school - will completely discount anything other than volunteer experience...

You have no volunteer or work with patients in a clinical setting? You have no volunteering with those less fortunate than you? How have you shown those schools (or any school for that matter) that you know what you are getting in to? That you want to be around sick and dying people for a career? How has your performance arts or research shown that?
