Hello, this is my first post here. I am interviewing at UCI (my only interview!!) on thursday, and I was hoping for a little feedback/advice from som other interviewees at UCI.

This is my second consecutive year applying. Last year I had no interviews despite a 38 MCAT, though my GPA was only 3.42.

Any tips, warnings, advice, encouragement, discouragement??

Thanks

Tyler

Hi Tyler,

It looks like I will be there this Thursday as well, so I don't have much experience with UCI, though I have been interviewed at other UCs. The tips I can offer from my interviewing experience is to look up the interview feedback here on studentdoctor.net. Prepare from the questions asked previously, know your primary as well as secondary. Remember to smile and that they want you in the class, so act like someone they'd love to have. That's all you can do. Good luck,

Z.

i'll be there thursday as well. i'm psyched we will be there on match day! see you guys there 🙂

No need to stress the UCI interview whatsoever, its very laid back; i think they realize their competing with other UCs, so they try to make it as stress free as possible.

they interview twice a month, so expect groups of around 40.

morning opens i with snacks and coffee, followed three or four presentations. on our day we had the admissions lady, a financial aid presentation, an MD/MBA presentation, a talk from the associate dean of admissions and, something else i can't remember...all this takes you to about noon.

at this point you have lunch and the student interviews are right after lunch. Very laid back, they have your UC primary, but not your scores or gpa...so you mostly discuss the varoius activities you wrote about.

then most students get a shuttle down to the uc irvine medical center, about 20 mins away, to interview with your faculity; again, very laid back, my interview had zero ethical questions, we spoke about some activities, and the rest of the time he basically recruited.

and your basically done by around 3.

good luck, and don't worry too much, UCI accepts a lot of the students they interview...there is suppose to be heavy movement late in the season as UCLA, UCSF and UCSD select their classes (even our tour guide admitted UCI was the UC bottom feeder)

again, best of luck

p.s. to the OP, at 38 is great, i have a hard time believing you didn't get in anywhere....a 3.4 is well within 1 sd of most schools...

did you only apply to UCs?
did you only aplly to a handful of schools?
do you have any medical related extracurriculars?

(have you ever been convicted of a war crime?) 😛

ok.... GOOD LUCK all you UCi interviewees

UCI is a totally laid back and pleasant interview experience. they do schedule your entire day ( I wasn't done until 4 and never had a spare moment).
the interviews are very friendly and laid back- they are semi open- i think that they have your personal statement only or something like that.

and it is match day on thursday!!

They also do a presentation about on-campus housing options and have you fill out a form to request on-campus housing if you want (there's a bit of a waiting list and they want you to get as much of a head start as possible).

Everyone seemed extremely friendly as if the interview day was more of an opportunity for us to check UCI out, than for UCI to check us out.

For those who are flying in and need a ride back to the airport, the shuttle that takes you to the medical center for a faculty interview will also stop at the John Wayne Airport afterwards if you request. The school is only 2 miles from the airport!

Good luck to TYY, Zephyr and Lola on 3/20!!!!!!!😀

Thanks all, for the replies.

I volunteered for a couple of years in the local hospital, ortho, onco, mostly ER. I also have lots of good experience as a scrub tech in plastic/cosmetic surgery. Scrubbing cases, first assistant, sewing, etc.

To be honest, I thought a 38 would float me in, or at least get me a bunch of interviews, but alas, last year not one interview! I only applied to 7 schools; all the UCs and a couple out of state schools.

My grades STUNK freshman year, but I got 4.0 's (or close to it) my last two years.

All I have is this one interview at UCI, so needless to say I am very excited about it. I was planning on wearing a suit for my interview, is that appropriate and the best choice?

Thanks again,

Tyler

TYY,
Without exception, every single applicant in the group of 35+ on my interview day was wearing a suit. It was looking like a stockbroker convention (but during the morning presentation, they tell you to take off your jacket, loosen your tie, get comfortable). Do your best to look as professional as possible, but when it's time for the interview, just be yourself. It sounds like you have some excellent medical experience in your background. Best of luck!
