For those of you who went to the UCI second look- whadja think about it? I got in after the second look so I am curious as to what ya'll thought of the school. I have to decide between UCI and Davis- would love any insight...
Gracias

Are you talking abt UCI med school or undergrad?

I'll be attenting UCI as a junior this coming winter...im an undergrad...

I'm a senior at UCI undergrad and I'm originally from the bay area so Davis was where I wanted to go and most people from the bay area don't even know where Irvine is on the map. I saw both campuses and they're pretty much the same.I like the fact that the beach is just 15 minutes away. We also have stellar neuro research if your into that. I dunno about Davis, but the city seems to be pretty safe for a college town (if you can call it that) just in case you like walking late at night. The graduate housing that I live in is really awesome and cheap. Most 3rd year medstudents just commute to Santa Ana when they do their rotations so they still keep their cheap grad housing. LA and SD are about an hour away. And during the winter, snowboarding is just an hour and a half away. Its weird to actually go snowboarding in the morning and then have a barbeque in the beach in the afternoon.
I can't comment on the classes though since I'm not in medschool. but I know a many people that turned down USC and UCLA for UCI. So FWIW I can say that you won't be dissapointed in comming here.

thanks for your reply.. how do you find uci's med center? i just was not all that impressed with it- whereas i really liked davis' hospital. also do you do all your required rotations at the uci med center- or do you go out to long beach and the va?

really? I've been thinking that if it was my call, I'd go to Irivine. Kiping, i didn't get a chance to see UCI's med center when I was down there. But i would like to reemphasize my undying love for UCD's med center. I cannot say enough about how wonderful I think it is.
does anybody know much about the new hospital they're building at UCI?

for what it's worth, i wasn't that impressed with uci's med center either. but you should go there anyway to open up a spot for me at davis! 😉

I remember the administration joking about the what UCI stands for. She said "Under construction Indefenitly"

and asian girl standing next to me told me it was also known as "University of Chinese Immigrants". Thought it was funny.

Moskeeto,
You'd really go to UCI over UCD? I was thinking about the same dilema. Even though I REALLY want to stay home in LA near family and bf, I don't know if I could go to UCI...not that it's bad, but I just don't see myself really fitting in. I could understand though if you wanna see something different. I think I'm in for a change of scenery again, so going back to the bay is good for me. Good luck and I hope that you get off those evil waitlists.

Hehe I just realized that my previous post doesn't quite help the person asking the question.
I would also have a hard time deciding between the two. I got in UCD. Havent heard from UCI in a long time. People seemed happy in both cases and way happier than people at UCSD, hehe.

i think there's people at Guantanamo Bay that are happier than people at UCSD.

I'd say something, but then all the UCSD people would lynch me.

PS I vote for Irvine.

I went to the Second Look a while back. It was a lot of fun! I really liked the people there. The students were very diverse, many non-trad with kids. It was kinda weird for me seeing how like 5 women in the graduating class this year all had babies during med school. One lady even had two. Guess it shows how supportive the admin is in terms of personally working things out for you. The curriculum is 60-70% lecture with 30-40% PBL. They're actually implementing a holistic health aspect to the curriculum which i thought sounds really interesting. Like you'd learn about massage and acupuncture and other natural healing methods throughout the first two years. It's not a big part, but it's there. About the hospital, it looks ok. About 15-20 minutes drive away from the med school. Our tour guide was pretty cool and he got us to visit the ER hubs and this awesome after-call room where they have like a Japanese tea room thing with relaxing music and little table top sprinkling rock streams ( not sure what those things are called). BTW, call ends at 8 pm which sounds really really nice to me.

The prospective students I met there were all Cali residents. Most were from the UCs, like UCLA, UCI, UCSD. Some were from East coast ivies. They seem genuinely down to earth and easy to talk to.

Housing. If you want guaranteed housing, sign up for the pre-entry summer program. Aks Gayle about that.

Well, I would pick UCI over UC Davis. I actually decline Davis interview so I can't really compare their campuses and other things. I used to live in North Cal but I've converted to So Cal for my undergrad. It's so hard for me to move up there again for med school, though I have to.

Hope all this info help.

Good luck with your decision.

That is old news brah, but classic nevertheless! The most current meaning behind UCI is this: "University of Customized Integras"

If you are wondering why...just come and visit...

at davis alot of people change the UC Davis into "You See Asian" I don't know how funny that is or the UCI thing, but its out there. over half the incoming class this year was asian.

hey there
You were def in my tour group - that relaxation room was bomb!

While we're on the topic of of UC nicknames (please don't be offended), these are some more floating out there:

University of Cow Dung, University of Casual Sex and Beer, University of Cocky Bastards, University of Caucasians Lost Among Asians or University of Civics and Lowered Acuras (perhaps not as true as the UCI one)...

oh I know another one

MIT = Made in Taiwan

Also shared by the asian girl I met at my interivew in UCI

i can only add the overused University of Spoiled Children (sorry bounty 😉 )

ok now people do we have any other arguments for davis over irvine or vice versa? like TYY- why did ya say hands down davis?
oh- people HAVE A NICE LONG WEEKEND!!

oh- i can also add NY Jew

oh, that's what this thread was about? hmm...i like the acronym stuff better. yes, University of Spoiled Children is a classic. and Bounty will fit right in... 😉

i also like these shirts i once saw at a notre dame/usc football game, although they are quite vulgar: U Suck C**k! i appreciated them dearly however, and even tried to buy one off the kid's back. he wouldn't part with it "in a million years."

No one remembers Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp?
On a more serious note, the current UCIMC in Orange is so-so, but the new hospital should be the bomb.

what is uncle charlie's summer camp supposed to stand for???
i know uci will build an awesome new med center- but it won't be done till at least 2008- too late to do me any good...

OHHHHHH- i always forget about santa cruz- silly me

Most likely if you go to UCI that is where you will end up for residency. So the hospital actually will matter by then.

although many people do their residency where they went to med school, lots of people do go elsewhere.

Most schools keep about 30-40% of their students. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with people coming from the area, but it also has to do with the fact that you train with the people who decide who get's in their residency, so they know you real well, and it helps their school to take people from their own school. So most likely, your best shot at your best residency will be at the school that you go to.

I already know personally the heads of about 4 programs at my school through classes and other events, and that is a huge advantage than any other schools. Sometimes things happen where a person would say that if you stay at the school, you will be garunteed to get the hemetology fellowship, etc, etc. You can't get that at other schools.
