For all of you guys from California applying for the 2009 cycle, besides the UCs (and all the other crazy cali schools), which other schools are you applying to? What are you guys using as backups?

I got rocked by the UC's this year. Two interviews, one which became a hold, and all the rest rejections without interview. My OOS's didn't receive me well either. Got 3 OOS interviews out of 14. I'm just glad I got through it all with an acceptance. Rough ride.

Try the SUNY's, although they might not be as friendly to OOS this year because of policy changes. I saw a lot of CA interviewees on my interviews at Upstate and Buffalo and heard from others that there were a lot too.

agree with sketchlazy. apply to new york schools in general, there are a good amount of them, and a lot of california kids head out there -- SUNYs, Albany, NYMC. all you can do with the UCs is try :luck:

I got lucky with GWU, IU, EVMS, WAKE, and Drexel.

Be prepared to lie about how much you want to leave Cali.

    :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Sooooo true..... :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

My backups were mostly NY schools like AECOM, Stony Brook, NYMC, etc. I got in most of them too, Stony Brook actually almost charmed me in going becuase it's so friendly there. But after my UC acceptances, I pretty much cancelled all my other trips out there. Some other safeties not in NY but outside of california were Drexel, Vermont, Penn State, etc.

there were plenty of reach schools on the east too though...

I was looking at the MSAR yesterday and it seemed like Stony Brook nd a few other NY schools didn't take that many OOS, and yet I have seen quite a few people recommend them for OOS applicants. Er... 'splain? I don't get it.

I'll be applying to a few Florida schools, Toledo, and a few others. I'll be applying DO as well but I wouldn't call it back up. If i don't get into UCSD, I could see my self picking a DO school in cali or AZ over some MD school in the middle of a place I don't want to be. so well see how it works out

Well I knew someone who got into StonyBrook from CA, so I applied this year and got in too. Similar story for AECOM. I didn't get into NYMC but I also turned down my interview post my CA acceptance. I don't know why the data from MSAR is different. If I had to guess though I would say maybe it's becuase people from OOS like CA all use those schools as safety schools. But they turn down those "lower" tier NY schools after acceptance becuase they got accepted elsewhere despite the fact that those schools do like OOS applicants (becuause in the end, only east coast/ny people love to stick around... maybe..). But that logic also has holes...

like I said though, I just picked because I knew friends that applied and got in, so I did it too. And the schools aren't bad either.

im also from cali and applied this past cycle. i used the following schools as safties:

    temple
    saint louis
    drexel
    nymc

the following are more competitive, but they're friendlier to cali residents:

    albert einstein
    case western
    boston university
    univ of pittsburgh
    mount sinai

Yeah being a Cali applicant is rough. Check my mdapps for the places I applied to as non-UCs. Ignore the Indiana and KY as I had family there which helped.

And as others said - you need to be convincing about wanting to leave Cali.

I totally agree. Don't believe the words "safety school"! There are none! Medical College of Wisconsin loves Californians too. I think every interview I went on last year asked me why I would want to leave California. They know we live in a great area

I used Saint Louis University, MCW, GW, Jefferson, and Drexel although I was rejected from 3 of my 5 safeties. I am not 100% sure about this but if a school thinks you won't go there, they tend to reject you (someone correct me about this if its not true.) I guess if you are from California apply broadly. I don't even think its about safeties vs. UCs, I put tons of non-safeties which were in the midwest and east coast.

damn, that is really a depressing sign for us cali people. Just curious, why weren't you accepted to at least ONE cali school if you got interviews from most???

whatever the reason, i hope you get into at least one by the end of this cycle :luck:

MCW truly does love CALI folk. Tons of people at my interview were from CA. It was a really nice school too. If UCSD doesn't come through, that's where I'm headed.
