🙄

Okay, here goes. I have this friend... I really do and it's not me... who is a fellow Ross student applying to EM residency this year. She really wants to know what her chances are of getting accepted pretty much anywhere. She's using the shotgun approach and pretty much applying to every reasonable program.

Scores: Step 1=205, Step 2-CK=228

Misc: Great LORs, great past experience (previous ER nurse), and excellent pre-clinical and scores in rotations so far.

Any thoughts?

P.S. I apologize, in advance, for this post. She's begged me a few times to do this... 🙄 it's so against my nature you don't even know it, but friends are friends.

looks good-there's reasonable hope. would have like to have seen above 210 on that step 1 but step 2 sort of makes up for it. it all comes down to whether or not she scored some notable away EM rotations and got some walk-on-water LORs that she can submit right now. great non-EM recs by themselves won't cut it

She's gonna do fine. She will likely match somewhere in the US, maybe not her first choice but if she casts a wide enough net, she should be good.

Should do okay. It's gonna sound sexist, but it wouldn't hurt if she were attractive as well. It shouldn't matter, but it does.

do you really think that helps? have you seen a PD or people rank people highly b/c they thought she was attractive during an interview? I just dont see how that could help!!!

Really, think about interviewing george castanza vs. Magnum P.I. for the same job - both have the same qualifications/numbers, but the taller, more handsome and naturally more socially adapted will get the job more often. Maybe not a conscious decision, but certainly a sub-conscious one.

Unless last year's class had hooked up with every ED nurse and nobody could get any work done anymore, then you would hire george. 😀

(makes me wonder how did I match?) (PD probably wondering the same thing.)

Come on. Looks always matter to some degree. Most of us are very professional, but there are subconscious things hardwired into our brains that affect our decisions every day that we don't take any notice of at all. Favoring attractive people is very hardwired into our brains.

edit: Think of it this way. It sure ain't gonna hurt!

She's very tall, thin, and attractive. She's a very striking person when you see her in person. I think that definitely works to her advantage.

Haha! No. But, some tall, lucky Christian guy out there is just waiting to meet her, I'm sure.

Last year during the interview there was this HOT HOT HOT Hispanic applicant, I mean, wowee she was a looker. She wasn't the brightest of the bunch, but I tell you, myself and some of the attendings at the end of that interview day remembered her, and we remembered her on Rank Day. Of course, it didnt' help her rank any but atleast we remembered her (fondly).

I think you will have to give me her phone number in order for me to fully assess the situation.
