Hey guys, congrats on your acceptances. I am still trying to get in, however, and would very much appreciate some help/advice.

I know a lot about UHS and very much so want to go there, so now I am planning out my strategy for admissions.

I have a 3.16gpa from university of missouri rolla in electrical engineering. my science gpa is a 3.25. I am taking the MCAT in april and going by the aamc tests i have taken i should get around a 9-10 on each section of the test.

I am just looking to see what you think they like to see in their matriculating class, things that stand out, what they put emphasis on, timing of applications, etc.

Any and ALL help would be VERY much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi - I was accepted into UHS for the class of 2007 and I graduated from the University of Missouri - Rolla in GeE. My gpa was very similar, I did end up getting my masters at Washington U in Environmental Eng. I think my masters was a big plus because my MCAT scores were average - I really struggled with the test.

I would just recommend that you score 9s or higher as you thought you would on the MCAT, shadow some doctors, volunteer at a clinic or hospital. Were you involved in alot at Rolla? Are you currently working or have you graduated? I would also get involved in service activities outside of medicine.

Your gpa is great for engineering especially from UMR and UHS will know that.

apply early!

goodluck

thanks for the help. do you think your masters degree was what got you in to school?

anyone else have any help??? PLEASE???

Hey - I think my masters helped but you don't need a masters. I also have alot of work experience and activities but I am also a non traditional student.

I see lots of students get in with a decent gpa and average mcat scores. I think as a younger student your activites in college have alot more weight.

You will go great - really just get a decent MCAT score and apply early and get some good letters of rec.

It seems like you are on the right path. your gpa is a little low but it looks like your MCAT will make up for that. What I liked about UHS though is that it is not just a numbers game. Sure it plays a part, but they are really looking for a well rounded highly motivated person. what kind of clinical experrience do you have? what kind of leadership skills did you develop at UMR? I would really highlight those things. also, do you have a rec letter from a DO? that alone gives you several "bonus points" in the UHS admissions process (along with the clinical experience and the EC's). are you applying for the calss of 2007? if so, have you already turned in you secondary?

What newfocus said is right. Your GPA is a little low but I think that the admissions committee will (should) take the difficulty of your major into consideration. Make sure that you mention that fact in your personal statement, at the interview and any other chance you get. Make sure that you show them you know what osteopathic medicine is about and that you have more than just an interest in it. How can you show them? Shadow a doctor more than just once. Volunteer in hospitals or clinics more than once a week a month before you apply or interview. The D.O. letter is a must. If you can try to track a doc down that attended the school. I have 4 that I know of just in my area, it took a little to find them. Then I hung out with them and convinced them that I really wanted this and they conveyed that to the admission committee and dean. One of the reasons I choose UHS is they selected people with experiences and a true love and desire to be physicians. They don?t seem to place as much emphasis on raw scores to select their student.

I hope this helps.

I am almost done with my first year at UHS and the year was great!! The best things about the school are the curriculum and the people.

I think one of the best things you can do is find a DO that is an alum of UHS. They are really big on alumni here, so if you have a DO that is an alumni, that letter will have a lot of weight. Also, I would get some sort of medical experience. The easiest to get is a nurse's aid or a phlebotomist. I did both of these plus more and I think between that and my letter from my alumni connection (my hometown doc), that is why I got in here. My MCAT was definitely below standards and my gpa was ok.

So there is hope. Just make sure also to put stuff on your app that will make you unique. They are really big on diversity here.
