So, I just got this lovely email from UIC last week:

"Dear 2006 Medical School Applicant:

The Committee on Admissions of the UIC College of Medicine reviewed your
application in January 2006. We wish to advise you that no final decision
has been reached on your application, but that you are still under
consideration.

Please note that the Committee reserves the right to withhold all final
decisions until June 1st. You will receive another email later in the year
to update you of your status in the process.

We ask that you notify us of mailing address or phone number changes so we
may communicate promptly with you."

Does anyone know which way this usually leads to??? (I tried doing a search and couldnt find anything). I know UIC had issues last year with too many people in their class and that they were going to put more people on hold this year. I REALLY want to go there since my family is there. Do you think writing a letter of interest/intent to the ADCOM/Director would help at all???

wtf mayne...i got this too.

It has no mention of a "waitlist" either. I thought I rocked them interviews...what in god's name is going on????

If i dont hear by the end of this month...then **** uic.

qt when'd you interview again?

I interviewed on Dec. 23 in Chicago...how bout u??

...AND the most frustrating part is that one of my interviewers told me THREE TIMES(!!!) that I had nothing to worry about and that I should have a very merry christmas because there is no way that they would not let me in...

grrr....I would love to write them off and say I'll just go to where I'm already in but more than anything I want to be back by my family.... 😡

Does anyone else know what has happened to people who have gotten this email in the past??

I interviewed 2 days b4 you in chicago. Was one of your interviewers Dr. feinberg? or Dr. gomez? Both of them were all like "you are going to make a great doctor" and "if i were you, I wouldn't be worried at all" etc etc?
wtf ?? All that buttering me up and then they send me that email. And one of the interviewers (dr. feinberg) was even bitching about how uic is so fast in its final decision turnaround time "we are MUCH better than those idiots at RUSH" was what he had to say.

yea, i can definitely see that...those bastards

I wish I could remember the guy's name. He was a much older retired orthopedic surgeon. He kept telling me I talked too fast and that I was stupid for not getting a second opinion about an old knee injury, but in the end he said all those things about me having a great application and blah blah blah. An exact quote of his was, "They must have cried when they didn't let you in last year. They probably just didnt have any more spots." And now I'm afraid that the same thing is going to happen this year. I got so excited that I might actually get to move home...grrrr....

OK, so I think I've decided to write a letter(since its better than just sitting on adn obsessing about it), you think it would be better to send (an email) to the dean or a letter to the adcom??

yea that most likely was dr feinberg...he is the old retired chief of orthopedic surgery. Im sure he asked u a bunch of questions about socialized medicine and universal healthcare also. Writing a letter is a good idea. You should probably email the dean first and just feel out the response. If it seems positive and indicates that they need something more from you to show your commitment then write that letter of intent. But you never know, maybe the dean will be impressed with your email and fix everything that needs fixing (which means you getting in) without you having to send out a letter.

Good luck to you. I think I am going to just wait till the end of the month. If i don't hear back from them I am prolly gonna withdraw my app.

The older retired Orthopedic surgeon I believe is Dr. Feinberg. He's a great guy, although he definitely should not have said you're for sure in. Very unprofessional, I had the same thing happen to me at an RFU interview last year only for nothing.

I was given a similar email late in the game last year (early may) after my april interview (yes, they keep interviewing that late) but mine was worded a bit differently. It specifically stated that my application was being placed "on hold" which is what they call their waitlist. So you haven't been waitlisted... and you haven't been rejected. That's good.

I don't imagine a letter or an email would hurt in one way or another, it could only help. Just be sincere, always easier to stop obsessing when you know that you've done all you could do 🙂

Good luck to both of you

Yeah I interviewed on April 6 of last year. When I got that email last year, I knew they just didn't have anymore spots. I'm praying that this year turns out differently....

I just realized how much I suck at writing letters....how can I eloquently say to the dean, let me in damnit. Plus I have nothing to update them on since I do nothing but work all the time. Any suggestions?

Hrmm... I can't think of anything necessarily eloquent, but I'm feeling like you should make it a point to let them know that UIC is your first choice and that you would pick it above all other schools. Maybe talk about aspects of their program that you are excited about? Praise the program, tell them what an asset you'd be to the program, why it fits for you better than others. Just let them know that you are still strongly interested and haven't moved on to other acceptances too.

Then again, I've never actually written one of these letters so what do I know? This is just my opinion of what I think a dean would want to hear.

At the middle of the month, applications are reviewed. Some are rejected, some are accepted. Your letter just means that your application was neither accepted nor rejected in the most recent round of decisions and is up for evaluation during the next round of deliberation.

nah that aint the case sista

i called the office the day i received the email and they said that my app could be up for review again in the feb committee meeting. So if I am to hear something, I will probably hear by the end of feb (same for you, I am guessing). If not, the application will just be throwin the "review-in-march" pile. So I better hear from the by end of feb. Otherwise, I am gonna withdraw my application cuz i gotta go out of the country and i dont want this hangin over my head.
