I have to make a decision between these schools before June 1st and can't make up my mind. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
UIC
Rush
SIU
Saint Louis U

UIC if you want large classes, more exposure, Chicago.
(if you haven't already chosen Chi you probably won't
get it at this point)
SIU if you can bare Carbondale for 1 year, and PBL.
SLU, beautiful campus...more exposure St. Louis

i only have further perspectives from the minority point of view.

if you're a IL resident, i think the choice is easy: UIC.

Yes, I did get Chicago, but not originally, I was moved because my brother was accepted and placed in Chicago.

Hmm, I made this very same choice last year. I chose Rush and couldn't be happier. You can pm me if you want to know all of my reasons! Good luck with your decision. 🙂

Why Rush over UIC?

To tell you the truth I don't know much about UIC, except that it's the largest med. school in the country(i think). Anyway, my reply is biased as you might have guessed from my signature. I can tell you why I picked Rush. I got a great feeling from the interview. The students had only the best things to say about the school in terms of how supportive the staff is, something that resonates in their sucess. Their stats. are above national averages. If you take a look at this year's match you'll see that it's good. Training facilities are great, and Rush is home to some world renown attendings. Rush students also get to rotate through County. The RCSIP will give you a chance to help in the underserved Chicago communitites very early on. The curriculum is structured so that students get clinical exposure biggining the first year through the preceptorship programm. I was told by a few people that research opportunities are there if you're interested. Everyone I've told I'm going to Rush is impressed. Rush has a huge medical network throughout Chicago, and everyone knows it. Out of 170 Chicago doctors placed in "the best doctors list", as compiled by an agency I can not recall at the moment, 46 were Rush doctors. Bottom line, Rush trains great clinicians, and especially if you want to stay in the mid-west for residency and beyond this is a great school. Now, UIC may be great too, definitely cheaper. I don't know. Good luck with your decision :luck:

Andy,
Think about what you want to practice and how you want to learn. I chose SIU over both SLU and UIC because I know i want to practice rural medicine in southern Illinois (although my roomate wants to do Ortho in a big city, so you're not limited to farmlands)- and PBL seems really kickass to me. And I'm saving over 100 grand by not going to SLU. Honestly, the $ wasn't much of a detail for me, and shouldn't be for you. Go where you want to, and the money will work itself out over the next 20 years or so (haha, aren't loans great). SIU kids all do better than national average on boards as well. Another thing is that, yeah Med school is hard, but the kids at SIU really like it and really like each other. I didn't get that feeling from UIC or SLU (actually heard kind of the opposite for the Chi-town group of UICers). Our class size is 72 vs. UIC's "largest in the world" status.
PM me if you want to know any specifics about my decision and I'd be happy to promote the Salukis some more.

Hi,

It really is based upon what you feel is best for you. In my experience...

UIC was my undergrad institution, it was my first choice for med school based on the student response being primarily positive about their curriculum. After being exposed to other schools, I realized that for me a smaller school would lower my stress level at least minimally because I would not have to deal with a more apathetic administration (this really turned me off). However, the ability of going for a dual degree would be easier here and at SIU than at Rush.

SIU is a very good school, I was there for a postbac program and the professors will give you as much or little personal attention as you want. For me, the PBL curriculum is not the best way to learn the material we have to know and I wanted to be closer to my family and friends as a support system. Carbondale takes a little getting used to, but since most of your time is for studying this isn't a huge concern, and there is always Paducah or St. Louis if you need to get away.

Rush has become my school of choice because I want to practice in an underserved urban community of Chicago, and their community service options are extensive, but in addition to that the administration is very supportive and my experience with the students there has been good as well. They seem more invested in training students from the beginning in dealing with patients and professors seem more approachable there than I felt they would be at UIC. The quarter system would be better than the semester system for my learning style as well. The cost may be high, but in the end it makes more sense to happy for the next four years getting to my goal than spending less and being stressed out the majority of the time.

I hope your decision gets easier for you once you choose Rush...(Sorry, I just had to put in a plug!) 🙂

Did you decide on a school yet Andy?

Not yet. I am leaning towards either Rush or UIC, but nothing definite yet.

it depends on several personal factors (do you have a strong preference for being in chicago over st. louis? do you want to do primary care or specialize? where are you from and does tuition matter?)
my personal opinion, having interviewed at a few of these places last year, my order of choice would be:
UIC
SLU
Rush
SIU

UIC and SLU have the best reputations, SIU would be good for primary care, but i think that the location would stop me from going there. I was not impressed with Rush overall and would not go there over UIC if you want to be in Chicago.
