Well, I could use some help with this decision.

My dilemma is that I'd really like to stay in Chicago, but my UIC track is first year Urbana and last three in Peoria.

What do you folks think of other comparisons between the two schools? Obviously cost is a factor... but what about others? i.e. residency matches, teaching quality, overall student happiness, etc...

What would you choose?

Thanks in advance for your replies! I appreciate it!

This would make my decision too easy so it can't possibly work, but I thought I'd check anyway.

Does anyone who has the Chicago track be willing to trade for the Urbana / Peoria track? Perhaps someone who is not planning to attend UIC next year?

Thanks! My appreciation toward you would be impossible to put into words.

Docman,

You're saying if you had the UIC-Chicago track you'd easily go to UIC then? Can you tell me why? I have the same dilemma as you but I have a spot at the UIC-Chicago track.

From my knowledge, Rush isn't THAT much more expensive than UIC, and the administration is a bit friendlier at Rush.

My only question is how Rush students match. I know UIC students match everywhere, but I don't know if Rush is primary care oriented or not.

hey all, i've been waitlisted at Rush and accepted to UofI (waiting on site assignment). I can say that if I get off the Rush waitlist I will go there with no reservations. I don't see the prices as being too far apart and it seems the students at Rush are much happier than UIC. Did either of you interview in Chicago? I had mine in Rockford and would like to know how you percieved the students at Chicago..if you were able to speak to any of them?? Anyway good luck with your decision and if I get the Chicago campus I'll trade you that for your Rush acceptance!!!🙂 *I wish*

hey guys, in terms of rush's match lists, i got copies for the past 5 years and yea they do match everywhere. primary care (FP, ped, ent) account for maybe 25%. ~20% overall get topnotch hospitals; some derm, some ortho, the rest are pretty much the run-of-the-mill match lists for unranked/lower ranked schools.

ForceField I pm'ed you.

If you guys look at the loyola vs. rush thread, someone put up the rush matchlist (if I knew how to put in a link, I would, but I'm too lazy to figure it out).

docman, I interviewed at Peoria for UIC, and they've actually got some things going for them, like completely free housing for med students. I actually liked Peoria a lot, and almost wish I'd asked for that track. Anyway, I've actually decided on Rush because (a) its facilities blow UIC's out of the water, (b) it got stroger/county and gave the shaft to UIC, and (c) what's another 10k a year when UIC's tuition is jumping up every year like crazy anyway? Okay, I'm over-simplifying, and quite obviously biased, so don't flame me (I'm being facetious anyway 😉 ). I wish I could stipulate that when I drop UIC I could give my Chicago track to you, but I can't, so come to Rush with me instead!!

Students at UIC-Chicago track (I don't know about Peoria/Rockford) consistently match to better residencies than students at Rush. Compare the matchlists. The matchlist above for Rush is much different from Rush's more recent 2002 matchlist, which is much worse.

In addition, I don't know how important this statistic is, but in terms of NIH funding, UIC ranks 51 and Rush ranks 122 out of 126 medical schools. I bet you'd have little to no research opportunities if you attended Rush. UIC is having a new research building constructed in 2004. There are plusses to UIC.

Docman,
I just sent in my withdrawal from the UIC-Chicago track and Rush after I decided to go to another medical school. I am sure that some other students have decided not to go to the UIC Chicago track. So you need to get in contact with the Dean of Admissions at UIC and let them know about your desire to stay in Chicago. If you make a strong enough case, they are willing to switch you into the Chicago track.

Now concerning Rush, it is a very top notch medical school. The faculty is extremely friendly and responsive. However if you are interested in academic medicine it might not be the best place since it lacks a major university structure. They have research opportunities, but they may not be as great as UIC has.

I hope this helps you out!

PS Congratulations on your admissions!!!

I'd say contact the Admissions office with a strong reason for needing to stay in Chicago and pursue it. Try and keep your options open. It seems you really would rather stay in Chicago and I agree that the UIC-Chicago track is better - much more in resources and opportunities here than on the other tracks. If you can't get into the UIC-Chicago track, then go to Rush.
