I think it is inevitable that Doctors will experience pay reductions under Medicare. At the current debt level, healthcare spending is untenable and even if this administration chooses to forgo the payment reduction, subsequent administrations will be forced to do so.

Also, assuming that the healthcare reform bill is not overturned at the Supreme Court, the added burden of thousands of patients will necessitate that more doctors be trained, which may have the effect of reducing physician incomes in the future.

Even as a premed, I can tell that medicine is not a good financial decision. And, given the pessimism of premeds regarding the future of medicine, I wonder how future generations will view the medical profession and whether it will be viewed with the same level of desirability.

Does this mean that Peds will get more competitive since it will remain untouched by Medicare cuts? Any chance Medicaid gets similar cuts?

i think it's unlikely a 27% cut or similar will happen.. more likely a modest cut or a repeal of the ridiculous "sustainable growth formula" that recommends these cuts in the first place. i don't think peds would benefit much from a medicare cut, because medicaid is at least as likely to have reimbursement cuts, and because going from 300% the salary of peds to 250% the salary of peds probably won't turn away too many future specialists.

these huge medicare cuts have been looming for years, because each year congress votes to not listen to the "SGR" and instead enact a different adjustment to medicare reimbursement. medicaid, on the other hand, has been reimbursing peanuts for years, which is why some medicaid patients have difficulty finding care.
