Pascault Row apartment is my 1st choice since i prefer to live on campus. Just in case they cannot give me a room there, i am now looking for an off-campus apartment. is there anyone who knows baltimore well enough to give me some recommendations? is it possible to find somewhere that is clean, safe, and relatively close to school around 600-800$/month?
moreover, after i go to UMB for 1 year, is it easy/possible to get in-state student tuition rate? any advice on getting the in-state tuition rate?
Thank you. 🙂

Hey I am looking for the same thing, in-state residency there. Ive talked to Roxanne there a lot shes in charge or the most knowledgable about in state residency. Basically if you go on their website you have to follow their guidlines. It is possible yes, but there is something which I couldnt understand was teh wage issue. If you make more in another state than you did in Baltimore than you get your residency taken away. Now I dont knwo about you, but I plan on going home for the summer, and working full time, I dont know if my wages will come out more than Baltimore, but i am sure to a point in my second or third year it might, cause I may not work. I asked her this, and she said we dont really look at it, but we do. I dont know what that is supposed to mean. I am trying to talk to some students that may of gotten it, because they would be the best source. I really like the school, but if it is more expensive than me going somewhere closer to home, for me its not worth it. Let me know if you hear anything. I heard there are some gated apartments near the campus, and I heard saftey is an issue as you might of known from the orientation. Also where di dyou get information for picking housing on campus, I havent received that, and I already put my deposit in.
Hope this helps

Cruzangurl81,

the whole process of getting the state residency also confuses me. so basically we need to get a job during our 1st year there in order to get the residency? is it manageable w/ the UMB course load ?
what else we have to do to guarantee the residency?

for housing info, u can check it out on this site: http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/
it seems like there's only 1 apartment complex for all UMB students. that worries me b/c i'm afraid they don't have enough rooms to accomodate students.

& yep, safety seems like an issue living here. i don't feel safe at all walking around in this city, especially at night. (when i was there, i felt like i was gonna get robbed if i didn't look where i was going. pretty much felt so defenseless being unarmed while walking on baltimore streets 😀 ) other than that, i like this school a lot. 🙂

who's roxanne, btw?

Hey guys, I currently live in Baltimore and thought I might be able to give some advice as far as living goes. You were definitely right when you said that it is a dangerous city. I live in upper Fells Point right now, and I dont feel that safe. I even caught a guy trying to break into my rowhome. As for living more in the city, which is what I think you are going for, I have a friend who also lives in a high rise apartment complex right downtown. I think that is the safest bet, to live higher up instead of on or near the ground floor in a house or small apartments. Her place was really nice and it felt safe. She also had a guard on duty at the entrance. The inner city is worse in crime than outside. You might even want to see about bus schedules and try to live a little further away. There are a lot of ways to travel into the city using public transportation, a lot of my friends do it. Also, make sure you buy some mase, its pretty cheap but very effective. Sorry if I'm scaring you. I definitely don't mean too. There are a lot of great things about Baltimore too and if you live in the city you are really close to the harbor, which is great at night and in the day. There are definitely a lot of clubs and bars downtown as well...although I'm not sure if your gonna have any time to do that stuff. 😉

if you look on the bright side of things, you'll be a lot tougher once you leave maryland.

i dont think any city in the US is as bad as baltimore is sounding. perhaps if i was in...jamaica... (not the city)...

I dont think it's as bad as people make it out to be (impressions gained during my interview)

Then again, I am a 6'2" male, so I might not be the easiest target for a would-be rapist/thief. 😉

well I'm a 6'5" male and I still watch my ass. At first I thought I wouldnt be targeted by an thief but a post doc gave me good advice. "A gun doesnt care how big or tall you are" Trust me...the city isnt disney world.

I forgot that some Americans continue to "pack heat" out of respect for their constitution. 😉 Always good to be alert, never know when the Brits will hit your shores.

(Canadian here). Is the city really that dangerous? Don't you guys have a police presence at all?

LOL
😀

I'm 5'2". and my weight? the wind could blow me to the shore if it wasn't for my purse anchoring me back. 😀. can't defend myself, unless the thief is a 5 years old. 😀 😀 😀

The city isn't that bad. I've lived in Baltimore most of my life but have lived in smaller cities like Charlottesville and Durham, and bigger ones like D.C. and Philadelphia. There's violent crime in everyone of them. You just need to be vigilant and use common sense.
