My boss is somewhat bitter at the moment about the possibility of me leaving this summer for medical school. I have yet to take any vacation days and he's already hassling me when I asked for days off for interviews.

Anyway, my point is: For those who have already interviewed at UMDNJ, how long does the interview last? Is it feasible to plan on leaving the campus around 2 or 3pm? My interview is scheduled at 9am. I'd like to come back to work for 1/2 day. Thanks!!

They really don't do much for the interview day. Basically, you get a quick tour, can watch a video and get lunch. My interview was a 1 pm. I showed up at 11:30 for the tour/lunch and was out of there by around 2.

Why don't you tell your boss that you'll make it up on the weekends (assuming you don't already work weekends)?

My boss doesn't care b/c he wouldn't be in, and also b/c of company's policy I'm not allowed to work weekends. anyway, i do have 16 days of paid leave as of now. I am trying to accomodate the guy b/c I do like my job..a lot. I figure I'll just quit early in the summer and take my vacation then b/4 school. 🙂

oh, and thanks, exlawgirl! that's really helpful.

for my group the first interview was at 1pm. You should give the admissions office a call and let them know your situation. They are pretty organized but give your self some extra time for the interview to get started. Good luck!

They let you know your interview time before the day arrives. My interview was at 11:30 the interview lasted 10 minutes we watched a video, had a campus tour, and then had lunch. I was done by 1. Good Luck

Tell your boss to deal with it. Going to this interview is your future....do you plan on working at this job forever, or do you plan on going to medical school? Do not go to the interview concerned with work...i had this problem too...I took the day off.

Yeah, that's true. My time said 1 pm, and I wasn't sure whether that was my specific interview time or if all afternoon interviewees showed up at 1 pm. Technically, I don't think you're expected to do anything but interview -- I had to specify in my interview response that I wanted to attend the tour/luncheon. Presumably, I could have said no and just shown up around 1. Of course, you do need enough time to get your picture taken and show proof of citizenship.

Ignore your boss. Obviously your professional development is not his priority if he is already trying to sabatoge your success. Good luck at the interview. Also, make sure you can express an understanding of osteopathic medicine and why it would be a good fit for you. I recommend either reading "The DOs" by Norman Gevitz or "Osteopathic Medicine a Reformation in Progress" by Gallagher which was my favorite b/c I love reading about the history of medicine. Your knowledge of osteopathic medicine may lead to a tiny (extremely tiny but still helpful) scholarship if you can get that point across in the interview. Good luck!!!!
