When I went there, i don't think location was so attractive, but they do have alot of patients there. They are building new clinics, but their preclinics weren't so impressive. Good faculty members, and a good number of students(75 or less).
It's pretty cheap, too. It's really easy to get NJ residence.

umdnj....
where is that,,
that is alot of initials James..
how much is the cost to sudy there anyway...🙄

THANKS!
It's $17,000 a year for in-state residence and they say that you can become a resident by the time you start or within a year for sure and then just pay in-state tuition. Good deal right?

Yeah, it's pretty a good deal. Also they supply you a brand new laptop when you get there. I am still thinking. I was pretty surprised that I got in, because I am from Nashville, TN. I heard the priority is given to instate students, and most of the outof state students from NY or somewhere close to NJ.

UMDNJ is very tough out of state. I think they consider Metro-NYC part of NJ just like the rest of Jersey does. I went to The College of New Jersey, which is NJ's premier state school. I am talking a 1300 and a top 10% to be in the running out of high school. Anyway the school has an agreement with UMDNJ Med School, one of those 7 year programs. Point being, the school is well respected by UMDNJ. I had a 20/18 and a 3.1 and still didnt get in, atleast not yet. Although I am much happier in Pitt or even North Philly. Newark is a special kind of ****hole. If you go good luck.

Hey, drmeathead

I can't decide whether i should go to Upitt, UMDNJ, or BU.
if you got into UMDNJ, would you pick UMDNJ over Upitt and BU? The school itself was ok, and they had a good patient pool.
thanks

Hello,

At UMD, they are going to build beautiful new clinics. These should be done by the time you hit the clinical years. I am suprised you weren't told.

The laptops are not given, they are added to tuition. (as if!)

Newark is a hole, but you can live away. I live in Bloomfield, 7 miles away. And as far as holes go, it is located in no worse a hole than some other dental schools are located in (no names given on purpose, PM me if you care). The patient's have screwed up teeth, so you get excellent clinical training.

The school is inexpensive, even after you add the 5 grand so of dental fees that is for equipment that get tacked on once or twice in 4 years. It is nice to graduate with only 140 grand or so in debt rather than 250 to go to a school not located in a hole.

2 years ago, the school ranked number 8 for the highest NBDE part 1 exams (or so we were told). The school pushes for excellent board scores, and even pays for review courses.

Quite a bit of the class pursues a residency, even the students who have parents as dentists. This year, 3 students matched in ortho (all in NYC) and 3 in oral surgery. The rest do GPR's, heavily prefering NYC.

PM with questions.

A university like that ..(that almost the cheapst Uni that I've heard about)... for sure have a website...

Does anyone of you know it...

Thanks

pandaman,

have you ever been to north jersey? its a mess. too many people too little space, everybody pissed off that they dont live in "the city". also violent crime is very high in newark, not like some schools that suggest it is just petty crimes. newark is no joke. anyway i spent 4 years at tcnj down in trenton, another jewel of new jersey and i think that pitt would be my choice. while you get tution break at umdnj dont forget if you get residency you have to get car insurance which is rediculous in nj, due to all the illegal's driving around that INS doesnt even know are here, let alone driving. also the commutes during rush hour in jersey are infamous, especially in north jersey. the people are very pushy. there is a definite difference in north jersey people verus south jersey. any more questions? let me know

The website for umd is umdnj.edu click on New Jersey Dental School.

I am a 26 year old woman who comes from a small midwestern town, and while the east coast in general is an adjustment, I have not felt unsafe in Newark. I will admit, I was freaked too, but when I get off 280, it is only 3-4 well traveled blocks to the school. I do not feel unsafe at the school (I cannot speak for the rest of Newark, since I never need to go there) and I leave school at 2 am sometimes.

I do not want to go to NYC, many dental and medical students do, but I haven't noticed anyone being "pissed" about not being in NYC. If we want to hit clubs or bar, we take the PATH train straight from Newark or Hoboken and then don't have to deal with actually living in NYC.

I am just trying to tell people about Newark, not compare it to Pitt, or Harvard, or Temple. Since I go to school in Newark and have so for 4 years, I thought I could shed some light on a place I travel to every day. It is not like other places don't have lots of traffic either. I have been to Pitt, UPenn, and BU. I was actually born in Pitt and I have only good things to say about it.

Many students keep the car insurance from their home state if they are from out of state since car insurance is cheaper out of state. Not enough to make a difference of 50 grand though.

I live in a 3 bedroom apt with a washer and dryer, driveway, and excellent landlords for $1200, water included. A one bedroom runs $650-800 according to my classmates.

The preclinicals and clinicals at NJDS are going to be built at the same time. The entire school is moving to another building. You should ask the school though when it will done, since it will be done AFTER I leave.

If you are in state, it is obviously easier to get in than out of state. Check the website for average DAT's, GPA's.

When it comes to pushy people though, I have seen them in lots of big cities, not just in the area of north jersey.

Get a feel for the place at your interview and do a second look if possible. If you are worried about the area, revisit the school. Be sure to have more pointed questions for the students to answer.

I am not sure if UMD accepts Advanced standing students. There was one student who was a dentist in another country. The school allowed her to do a pedodontic fellowship, but then she had to attend dental school starting from year 1 or 2 I believe. It was odd and I don't understand why she did residency before school.

And when you mean advanced standing, do you mean getting into year 2 or 3 after being a dentist in another country?

You should ask the admissions office this question to get a more accurate answer.

i'm a senior at Rutgers university nb and i'm currently looking for a place to live around the Newark area since i will be going to UMDNJ dental school next year. anyone out there who can give me tips as to where to live and look for housing. better yet anyone know someone graduating who is looking for a student to take over their lease.....please lemme know
thanks

For housing at UMD, you can check with the office of admissions, which maintains a list of housing units. I think it is better to go to the school and check out the ads hanging up around school.

I live 7 miles away from the school in a 3 bedroom unit for $1200. There is parking in the garage, a driveway, and a washer and dryer unit. I will be leaving July 1. You can rent the unit and then find 2 other students to live with you either through ads or through housing day with the medical students. The admissions office can also help you with this.

SMILEMAKER-I found out UMD does accept students with advanced standing. They are accepted into the 2nd year curriculum.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I know 1 foreign student who came from her country and did a residency at UMDNJ in pedodontics. She was going to return to her country. Instead, she decided to stay in America, and thus has complete dental school in America. She entered into the 2nd year class at UMDNJ and is graduating this year.

But she did do her residency first.
