The website for umd is umdnj.edu click on New Jersey Dental School.
I am a 26 year old woman who comes from a small midwestern town, and while the east coast in general is an adjustment, I have not felt unsafe in Newark. I will admit, I was freaked too, but when I get off 280, it is only 3-4 well traveled blocks to the school. I do not feel unsafe at the school (I cannot speak for the rest of Newark, since I never need to go there) and I leave school at 2 am sometimes.
I do not want to go to NYC, many dental and medical students do, but I haven't noticed anyone being "pissed" about not being in NYC. If we want to hit clubs or bar, we take the PATH train straight from Newark or Hoboken and then don't have to deal with actually living in NYC.
I am just trying to tell people about Newark, not compare it to Pitt, or Harvard, or Temple. Since I go to school in Newark and have so for 4 years, I thought I could shed some light on a place I travel to every day. It is not like other places don't have lots of traffic either. I have been to Pitt, UPenn, and BU. I was actually born in Pitt and I have only good things to say about it.
Many students keep the car insurance from their home state if they are from out of state since car insurance is cheaper out of state. Not enough to make a difference of 50 grand though.
I live in a 3 bedroom apt with a washer and dryer, driveway, and excellent landlords for $1200, water included. A one bedroom runs $650-800 according to my classmates.
The preclinicals and clinicals at NJDS are going to be built at the same time. The entire school is moving to another building. You should ask the school though when it will done, since it will be done AFTER I leave.
If you are in state, it is obviously easier to get in than out of state. Check the website for average DAT's, GPA's.
When it comes to pushy people though, I have seen them in lots of big cities, not just in the area of north jersey.
Get a feel for the place at your interview and do a second look if possible. If you are worried about the area, revisit the school. Be sure to have more pointed questions for the students to answer.
