I think this idea of autotapering Valium is oversimplified. For people who do take it long-term rather than as needed, it's never prescribed in accordance with its half-life (neither is Xanax for that matter which has a longer half life of ca. 12 hours than its actual effect would suggest). Some Valium metabolites have a very long half life in some people, but it's variable based on liver health, ethnicity, age, and genetics.
I don't know a lot about each of those metabolites, but I'd assume they're each like snowflakes. Maybe some are preferentially amnesic, some hypnotic, some soporific, some anticonvulsant. Who knows.
