Hey guys, I have recently been accepted at Columbia and IU but I still have not decided between them. There are two major factors which I guess are important for me.

1) IUSD is basically half the price of Columbia at $27,000 per year whereas Columbia is about $56,000 per year. My family lives nearby the university due to which I will save the room and board, thus I have not added that to the IUSD price tag.

2) However, I also want to possibly specialize and it seems that Columbia plays a stronger emphasis on that compared to IUSD.

Does somebody have any advice on which Dental school I should decide? If I go to IUSD, will I be at a disadvantage if I apply for specialty programs?

Nope, kick ass on the boards and have a high class rank. Go where you'll be happy.

you should definitely go to columbia.

this way, i may get your spot at IUSD since i am on their waitlist.

ok, i am just kidding you. like Zurich said, it should really be your decision as where you should go. look at both school's positives and negatives and decide which will be better for you.

i know its tough. god, i wish i had a decision like yours to make.

Ryan's right. I don't know enough about Columbia to compare it to IUSD, but unless you've spent time with GP's and specialists both, it's hard to form an accurate picture of what kind of career you want until you've had a chance to test-drive the different areas. Like Ryan said, go where you'll be happiest and the rest will take care of itself.

Pay the extra $$$ and go to Columbia if you think it's going to help you get into a specialty.

B/c we all know that graduates of state schools are only ever good enough to be general dentists.

(Don't take that seriously, I'm being sarcastic).

Going to Columbia isn't going to guarantee you getting into a specialty. It's just that more of their students are encouraged to pursue them. It's still upto YOU to make your goals happen.

Perfect, i was gonna say the same thing as you said, but the kid is a resident of IN... so his spot is not useful for us🙂

Does IUSD have specialty in their own sschool?
If so, it might not be that hard to become specialized.
4 years to make good impression with your faculty.

IUSD has programs for most dental specialties. I can't remember off the top of my head which one or two it's missing.
