Hey guys, I've been seriously considering changing my major lately. Due to some poor planning on my part I've left all of my current majors core (upper level Bio) classes for my senior year, while finishing my medical pre-reqs. Now that I've almost finished my pre-reqs I see what my final year has in store for me.... mostly pain! I'm going BS in Bio right now but considering BS in nutrition/food science since it encompasses many of the classes I've already taken. It also means a lot to me to have a degree where I can find a job if med school doesn't happen right away. Any advise on other majors? Maybe I should stretch out the classes over 3 semesters and keep at it? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Go with what you like! If nutrition/food science is interesting to you, do it. Don't extend your schooling time picking between a major. It will not make that much of a difference in the long run, especially with something like biology. I would encourage you to explore options outside of school before your senior year, as that will probably help you decide. A big turning point for me was when I actually got employed within a hospital.

It doesn't matter what your major is.

Adcoms don't care what your major is, only that you do well.

Question. I understand the consensus that majors don't "matter", but how can that be the case when ADCOMs are looking for students that can handle a difficult class load? Why wouldn't someone who took 18+ credit hours of difficult classes over a period of time due to their major(s) (and did well) have an advantage over, say, an art major with an average class load? The whole "your major doesn't matter" fact doesn't make 100% sense to me. Also note I'm not talking about extracurriculars and responsibilities outside of class, just a GPA and course difficulty standpoint. I watched a video of Wisconsin Madison's admission board, and one of the members stated they look for students that have demonstrated 1-2 years of challenging courses to prove that those students are prepared for medical school classes. How does this not take into consideration one's major? Not looking for an argument, just an explanation.

Make a chemistry major take studio art classes and see how well that goes. Rigor is hard to ascertain in many cases.

We look at rigor and yes, the harder your classes are, the better you look. But, it is never an excuse for poor grades. That is the point.

How do you identify rigorous classes? I know I've been surprised at how much tougher some classes are than similar sounding ones (eg neuro physiology lab >>>> principles of the nervous system but both are upper level neuro/bio)

That implies that ADCOMs know what classes are like at every school they get applicants from. Course X isn't the same at every university. What's rigorous at one school may not be rigorous at another.

Virtually nobody picks out individual classes or compares them to others. It is far too time consuming. Nobody cares that you took a couple hard classes or took one hard semester. It is also far from perfect, which is why it is a minor consideration, but how most people I know think about it (and how I look at it...)

1. School (bias toward grade deflaters and notoriously difficult schools like U of Chicago)
2. Major (bias toward engineering/Physics/Biochem)
3. Number of credits per semester (bias toward 18+)
4. Number of science credits per semester (bias toward 10+)
5. Consideration of neutral time consuming ECs (like concurrent working to support family)

Having one of those is meaningless. Having two, maybe/likely something is there. Having three or more, pretty sure bet that they are taking a far more rigorous course load than your average pre-med. Again, this ASSUMES that you are doing well in whatever you are doing. Even if you have 4 of those things, if you have terrible grades, nobody is going to shed a tear for you. But, if you compare:

Student A
State school, Biology major, 15 credits/semester, 8 science credits/semester, not working

vs.

Student B
U of Chicago, Physics major, 22 credits/semester, 12 science credits/semester, not working

There is no way to not take their academics a little more seriously. If they both have 3.9s it is somewhat of a wash, but if you say, each has a 3.6, yes student B's academics are FAR less concerning.

To follow up on my learned colleague's comments, we look for excellence across the board. Art majors still have to take the pre-reqs and do well. They have to do well in their in all other coursework. They also have to do well on MCAT. And if you think art majors have it easy, they have to take coursework that includes a lot of reviewing, critical writing and thinking. How do I know this? I minored in fine Art. It wasn't all drawing and painting.

A 3.9 GPA is still a 3.9 GPA

Like the others have said, it really just depends on what you like. Find something you are passionate about and do that. It doesn't matter if it's physiology or piano performance. If you find something you love, you will naturally get better grades, and that is really what the adcoms are looking for from your coursework.

My freshman year I declared as a bio major because I liked biology in high school. However, I discovered that there is a physiology major at my university, and the human aspect of biology is what I liked most about biology. When I discovered that I could focus on the one subfield I liked most, I did that, and now I'm getting good grades and loving my classes at the same time, which reduces a lot of the stress. If you find that one thing you really like, you will remember material a lot better and will be able to perform to the best of your ability.

@mimelim, what about taking an average course load, but also doing tons of things on the side? I tend to have 14-16 credits a semester (my university limits us to 18 credits for some reason), but I also have held a job during my entire undergraduate study (sometimes two at once), have volunteered at a hospital once a week for 1.5 years, work volunteer EMS for ~10 hrs/wk, and do research. I hadn't heard that you should have 18 credits or more in a semester, so that's a bit unsettling as I've never actually hit that mark.

Extracurriculars should not get in the way of your academics. Doing things on the side is incredibly important for personal and professional development, but it can not hinder your ability to perform academically. Jobs are a little different. If you are working because you want to live a certain lifestyle, that is very different than your applicant who is providing for others or taking care of sick/elderly family members. But, volunteering/research while very valuable in applications is never an excuse for doing poorly in school. I also want to make this explicitly clear. No one, not @Goro or myself is saying that you 'should' be taking 18 credits a semester. You aren't behind if you aren't taking as many credits as others. I am simply saying that if you are taking on more than others (school, major, classes in aggregate), we notice. It will NOT make up for doing poorly in your academics, but it can help because it IS noticed.

I see, thanks for the insight. I'm doing well academically, but I wasn't sure if there were higher expectations for credit totals that what I've been doing. I suppose I should be fine as long as I maintain my GPA while doing all the other stuff.

Don't you know you're supposed to make a 3.9+ at a top ten taking 25 credits while working two full time jobs, researching, captaining a sports team and volunteering for the children?

I would do the three semesters thing to reduce pain/stress. People here are suggesting that taking tons of credits per semester is not that important. Don't make yourself miserable just so an ADCOM stops for half second and look at your app to say oh that guy/gal took 18 credit.

This. As Mimelim stated, only do lots of credits if you feel like you can still succeed while doing so, as taking tons of credits won't look good if you got a 3.2 doing it.

Thanks for all the advise guys, I genuinely like nutrition/food science and think it would have lots of practical applications as an MD. The fact is my heart just isn't in the bio major any more. I can't imagine 4 bio classes in each of the next two semesters being desirable, even if I could swing it! The only question now is if any NFS courses count torward sGPA.

Unfortunately, they count towards all other according to AMCAS's course classification guide.
