===Univ. of Washington SOM c/o 2011===

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
VG, why are you in North Carolina? Are you just finishing your undergraduate there? At UNC? You're originally from Washington, aren't you? Why did you go there? I ask because I was headed to UNC for med school up until the moment that my acceptance from UW arrived, so I'm now intensely curious about UNC, Chapel Hill, NC, etc.

I am a WA resident and I went to UW for undergrad. I was doing some research and taking some classes at Wake Forest. The area is nothing like Chapel Hill (I am in Winston-Salem) and I am really happy to get back to Seattle :).

Let's get to know each other a bit, shall we? I'll go first. I'm a guy, I'm as single as can be :)D ), and I'm already from Seattle.

Your turn.

Tell us your gender, whether you're married or have a serious SO (and whether you have kids), and where you'll be coming from to get to Seattle (or Pullman).

I am a girl (as my SN suggests)
Single (and I like long walks on the beach )
I am living in NC right now

Does anyone know the range of how much they give out for the SOM scholarship? Thanks.

Ok I found the answer to this on the U of Wash. class of 2010 thread. They award up to 10K and that a lot of the people that get it are OOS students to help with their unmet need.

Let's add another topic to the getting-to-know-you posts (assuming that people will get into this).

Do you have some idea regarding what sort of practice you'll eventually pursue? Tentative or firm, broad and general or narrow and specific, let's hear it.

I'm leaning precipitously towards primary care in a community clinic (like Country Doctor, 45th St. Clinic, Seamar, etc.), and lately I've been thinking that a dual residency in IM/Peds is the way that I want to go--sort of an expanded FP residency that will give me a more solid base in medicine. EM also has its appeal, however.

I'm a guy from Idaho.
Almost got married a few months ago but the chick went psycho. Probably better that I found this out early on.

Like Chulito, I'm interested in IM/peds.

sorry to hear about that Mitchey (your fiance, not about your med. specialty interest :) ). This class of 2011 is going to freakin rock.

I honestly have no clue yet but since I was a neuro major I am going to say anything that relates to neuro since its the only thing I know...

Neurology, NeuroRad, NeuroSurgery

***This will probably change periodically depending on the class and the rotation that I am on :D

So who's excited about Second Look?

Is the purpose of Second Look to get those undecided applicants to firmly choose UW? Just wondering...

when's second look?

Second Look is this Thursday and ends Saturday. PM if you want more details.

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't know this at this point, but what exactly happens at second look?

I guess it's too late at this point, but I thought these dates were just for the MSTP crowd. Is that not the case?

If it is, does anyone know if there is a MD 2nd look weekend held at another time?

welcome to the UW everyone. I am an E-06'er. You will have a wonderful time here. Let me know if you have any questions!!!

I've got a lot of questions about the 1st year curriculum. Isn't there something like almost 40 class hours per week (like 8:30 to 5:30 M-F)? How do you guys manage your schedule? That just doesn't seem like it would leave much time for studying. The Class of 2010 thread you guys had going last year had some good information on the curriculum for first year, but I wanted to get your opinion on what you thought having just gone through it. Any advice for us incoming M1s on how to successfully navigate first year?

Hey all. Just thought I'd get in on saying hello to our class. I'm originally from MN, went to undergrad out here in WA and am now living in Tacoma until I find out whether I'll be in Seattle or Pullman/Moscow. Any cyclists/runners out there?

I like to run but really no longer than a pole vault runway :p

RisingSun and I are both cyclists. I definitely don't run except to catch a bus. Are you a swimmer? That's my other sport, though I'm not very good at it yet. I can go far enough, but everything past 15 laps is ungainly flailing.

Well I am looking to get a road bike when I get into Seattle. Maybe one of you can help me pick one out.

I love the water, but extended periods of swimming kills me. Anyways, I was just looking to find people from our class to get out and do some biking in the mornings or evenings during the week once school starts. I haven't rode much in Seattle (never in Pullman/Moscow), but there must be some good rides around these places. Exercise keeps me sane, and I would expect a lot of you may be the same. It'd be cool to get a group together and ride a few times per week once school gets going.

Why not live a few miles away from school and bike down the Burke-Gillman trail to school each day? That's what I plan on doing. It would be cool to have a group of us that all rode in together in the mornings. Chulito, you're on Capitol Hill, right? Are you gonna be biking to campus?

Yes, but Capitol Hill is basically right next to campus. I just zip on down the hill, cross the Montlake Cut (which is the waterway that links Lake Union to Lake Washington) and I'm there.

One advantage to chalk up on the Pullman boar (if you're chosen in the lottery):
GREAT cycling in the Moscow-Pullman area, tons of nice, paved, quiet country roads around, not to metnion good trails that are paved for about 20 miles to the east of Pullman (to Moscow, and on to Troy, ID).

That'd be ideal. So easy. Finding an apartment, on the other hand, may not be so easy. Do you guys think rent is more expensive in the U district compared to other places in Seattle? Any suggestions on where one might find an affordable apartment. I still don't know if I will be in Seattle this year, of course, but it would be nice to have some ideas in case I am up there. Same goes for Pullman/Moscow, any of you out there have any suggestions on where to live?

The U district is definitely not the cheapest part of Seattle. There are lots of inexpensive places there, but they're cheap for a reason and there's a lot of competition for them. Cheap but not shockingly shabby and/or seedy in the U district (or Capitol Hill, Wallingford, Fremont, Ravenna, Greenlake and other nearby neighborhoods) usually means living with a group of folks, which is what I've done my whole post-parents life up until now. I love it, but it's not for everyone. (Right now I'm renting a room from a couple I knew before, whose kids have moved out.) The Burke-Gillman Trail goes pretty far north, and if you head up that way housing gets less expensive. Try apartmentdaddy.org and the myriad similar sites to find a house or apartment, shared or empty, already established or not, etc. Those sites have worked wonderfully for me and many friends in the past. Check out the U district and those other neighborhoods as well, of course. My idea of cheap may be a lot less than yours, so you may find just what you're looking for at a price that you don't mind paying.

Did anyone else get their financial aid award today? Does anyone know if medical insurance is part of our budget?

I actually got my offer about two weeks ago (or at least ten days ago). I believe that medical insurance is figured into the budget. It was specifically mentioned in other literature that I received from UW in the past when estimated costs of attending and living in Seattle were discussed, though those materials didn't have anything to do with financial aid. I presume that this is the same budget, however.

I just called and they told me that insurance is not figured into the budget but as soon as you add insurance via MyUW they increase your budget.

What's MyUW, and how may I get medical insurance stuff rolling? I haven't received any literature on this stuff. How'd you guys find out about it?

I went to UW for undergrad so I already knew about MyUW before I got my site selection letter.

Once a site has been selected for you (Seattle or Pullman). They will tell you to log into the MyUW website (this is when you select a user name). My UW basically is a website that contains your email, registration, financial aid, etc. Through this website you can get health insurance provided by the school. I think you can get health insurance for fall probably right before school starts.

Does anyone know how comprehensive the coverage provided by the university is? Dental? Copays? Annual limits? What if I get diagnosed with a chronic disease half way through med school? How much does the insurance cost? Basically I want to know whether anyone has already done the thorough research for me that I really should do myself in order to decide between UW-provided insurance and some external provider. :D

I used it while I was an undergrad. I know that if you go to Hall Health for primary care stuff the visit is free. The precription coverage is okay. I think the provider is Mega Health Insurance. Its not great coverage if you need to see a specialist on a regular basis. Dental is not covered. From last I checked the insurance runs about $320 a quarter (from last year). I don't know the annual limits etc.

Ditto the above. It's been straightforward as an undergrad. All the UW medical facility providers bill the ins co directly, so no claims to file. Here's a page w/info: http://depts.washington.edu/ovpsl/insurance.html

Sorry for being a premed wannabe lurker loserhead. Y'all are so cool and accepted at UW & all. Gush.

I just found this thread so I should say hello!

Also, I'll be going to Moscow for year one but I'm not from that area and I'm wondering what other people are doing for housing. Some of my UI buddies have said that apartments in the Moscow region are pretty hit-or-miss. It will be awhile before I can make a trip over there , and I'm worried everything's going to be taken pretty soon now that finals week at UI is over. Any suggestions?

Welcome, Dave.

What materials have people received so far from UW? I've received very little: an acceptance letter, the form to specify WWAMI site preference, and my offer of financial aid. Has anyone received anything else? A first-year calendar? Information about insurance? Any other forms to sign or arrangements to make? Information about immunization? A book list? I got all of this stuff from other schools right after my acceptance, which leaves me anxious to confirm that important things from UW haven't gone lost in the mail. I suppose that I could call the office, but I hate to bother them with inane questions that they probably hear way too often.

I only received a letter that had my site selection, student number, confirmation of registration, etc. Since I left the state for a year right now I am considered out of state (I had to send paperwork to re-establish my residency) so I think that they sent me that letter because of that. I think that we will get everything after the WWAMI lottery. It's just a guess though.

Do you happen to know when the WWAMI lottery happens / finishes?

Also, they have updated the orientation website (finally) for the incoming class of 2007.

I want to say the WWAMI lottery is on May 17th...Chulito does that sound right?

Yeah, it's either the 17th or the 18th. I wonder how long it takes them to notify us. Probably not long.

In an email I received today the next lottery is listed as the 18th.

Congratulations E 07! I am a member of E06 and I wanted to offer advice especially for out of state students (like myself) regarding housing. I ended up subleting a place last summer and later found housing which I recommend especially for those of you out of region people considering the pre-matriculation program . I am looking to sublet my place from mid June thru July/early August. I am walking distance to campus! PM if you are interested.

No school-wide mandated novel this year? Does anyone know why they cut the book this year, or if there are plans for one that just aren't on the orientation website?

Hi E'07! I'm a current 1st year and i wanted to welcome you all!! I'm in the Medical Student Association (kind of like student government) and we just opened our spring clothing sale. go here to check out the gear you can get so you can arrive in style!

http://www.kotisdesign.com/login.asp?uwmedicine

also, who's here this summer? I want to meet everyone-- I will probably be having some bbqs so look for emails from me!

I arrive in Seattle on June 3rd. I can't wait

Hi everyone,

Wishing you good luck on the lottery today! I have a feeling it will all work out for the better no matter what. Keep us posted when the news is out. I'm not sure when or how they'll notify each of us.

I'm really nervous about it. We've been house hunting for a while and finally found a place that is exactly what we want. The owner has been generous enough to wait until today for me to find out these results so that I can make a final decision whether or not I can sign the lease. Because of my situation I am very confident that I could successfully petition to stay in Seattle, but that will take a few weeks and by then the house we have found will be gone. My wife is really bummed about this whole situation (it has been really hard to finally find a house).

I really hope we find out the results soon so that I can finally put an end to this up-in-the-air-ness.

G'luck everybody!:luck:

I just received an email moments ago informing me that I have been selected for the Seattle site!!! I am so happy I get to spend my first year in Seattle!

Hope everyone else got what they wanted!
