The school's financial problems came from lack of state support and paltry grant money, both which are currently being addressed. LCME has indicated that they are looking to place UH on probation, and this is under appeal. Insiders have said that the LCME always does this when new leadership takes over...which UH does in a new President and Dean. As far as state support, they've just approved $160 mil to build a new medical school RIGHT ON THE WATERFRONT. The school will also house the Cancer Research Center, hopefully stimulating more grant money. Bottom line: UH is in good shape.
Kutastha, hope you get in man. UH needs a guy with enthusiasm like you. None, the new Dean at UH has expressed an increase in out-of-state acceptances, but, being a state school, they are trying to educate M.D.s who will have a vested interest in Hawaii and will practice here. I mean, some state schools DON'T EVEN CONSIDER OUT-OF-STATER's. Last year, out of 62, UH took 6 non-residents. BTW, the Chair of Admissions told me they don't make money on tuitions, resident or nonresident. Keala, sorry to hear about your situation...did you get in somewhere in the lower 48? Gelly, awesome! Congratulations! Just hope they show me some aloha as well...
