Hello all:
Hardly anyone here ever mentions University of Hawaii - maybe because they accept so few out of state. But I have a questions for any SDN-ers out there who have applied - have you gotten in yet? What's your opinion of the school?

They make all their decisions at the end of the admissions cycle. Rumor has it all decisions are made now and they will let us know in May. Try again in about two weeks - there's a couple of us on here that applied this year.

I heard their accreditation was put on probation or something...

I know ... the thing with their accreditation makes me nervous ... not 'cause I'm scared they won't be accredited if and when I go there, but because I wonder what that says about their school...

I got my acceptance letter to Hawaii two weeks ago. The letter was dated 4/15/02. I probably got mine so fast because I live in Hawaii. From what I've heard, UH might be put on probation due to financial troubles. But we have a new dean at UH now who seems to be doing a good job so far. It shouldn't affect the accreditation, at least not for the years that we'll be there. Hope you hear good news soon!

P.s. what made you guys decide to apply here?

I also applied to UH-JABSOM this year and was accepted in March, although I know the majority of decision letters are going out around now or just recently. I have several close friends at JABSOM and have been following the school closely, since I've wanted to go there since first year of college.

Personally, I think the accreditation thing is bogus and unwarranted - JABSOM has a great program and has come a long way in the last 3 years. The students by and large love their experience there. It is ideal for anyone who wants to take up primary care and/or practice in Hawaii (I fall in that group). Ironically, I just withdrew my spot there, but it was for personal reasons and had nothing to do with the quality of the school. And hey, you can't beat the quality of life in Hawaii, at least IMHO.

Well, they might be able to deal with their financial troubles a bit better if they started taking ANY out of state people.

The school's financial problems came from lack of state support and paltry grant money, both which are currently being addressed. LCME has indicated that they are looking to place UH on probation, and this is under appeal. Insiders have said that the LCME always does this when new leadership takes over...which UH does in a new President and Dean. As far as state support, they've just approved $160 mil to build a new medical school RIGHT ON THE WATERFRONT. The school will also house the Cancer Research Center, hopefully stimulating more grant money. Bottom line: UH is in good shape.

Kutastha, hope you get in man. UH needs a guy with enthusiasm like you. None, the new Dean at UH has expressed an increase in out-of-state acceptances, but, being a state school, they are trying to educate M.D.s who will have a vested interest in Hawaii and will practice here. I mean, some state schools DON'T EVEN CONSIDER OUT-OF-STATER's. Last year, out of 62, UH took 6 non-residents. BTW, the Chair of Admissions told me they don't make money on tuitions, resident or nonresident. Keala, sorry to hear about your situation...did you get in somewhere in the lower 48? Gelly, awesome! Congratulations! Just hope they show me some aloha as well...

me ke aloha pumehana

I just have a side question for the Hawaiian locals here... Do you guys know anything about Tripler, the Army med center? I'm probably going to USUHS next year, and Tripler is one of the places where students can do away rotations and residencies, so I'm just curious. Do you guys know what it is like, is it well-respected? in a good location? (I guess that's a given, it IS Hawaii!) I don't even know how much the military peeps interact with everyone else, but if anything you know about a local vibe would be appreciated. thanks! 🙂

I applied to JABSOM as an out of stater as well but have not heard back yet. I fell in love with it when I interviewed there. All the people I met were great and all the students seem really happy. And, of course, it's beautiful!

Yes...they do take non-residents, but last I checked, you still had to have these really amazingly close ties to the state, more so than any other public school in the country that considers non-residents.

Well I'm applying there because the PBL seems an interesting way to learn and my boyfriend lives nearby. That definitely influences my desire to go there... but I feel like my chances are pretty slim cause I'm out of state.
Another thing that concerns me is the lack of basic sciences curriculum, only because the last time I took Bio was junior year. otherwise, I LOVE HAWAII I'm in love with the state and the people.

Did anyone get anything from UH in the last few days?

I got waitlisted today. Does anybody know how their waitlist works?

Hi guys, this is my first time posting, but I just wanted to tell you guys on the waitlist to not give up hope yet! Last year, the waitlist moved and moved - I didn't know anyone who got on the waitlist who didn't get in. With the whole accreditation issue this year (everyone who got accepted received a little letter about this along with their acceptance letter), many undecided applicants may decide to go to other schools. Who knows?

On a side note, anyone here get in through Imi Hola? 🙄

Aloha Enrico, and welcome to SDN!

As far as Hawaiian SDNers, I'm afraid there don't seem to be many in here (unless they lurk). I do agree with you about this year's waitlist...the effect of the LCME can't be positive, even if it turns out to be bogus.

I believe all who make it thru the Imi Ho'ola post-bacc program automatically matriculate as part of the upcoming freshman class (i.e. 10 students). As far as the lucky 10 who are admitted into this year's Imi Ho'ola class, I think it's too early...sometime in July???

Howdy howdy-

I think they chose the 10 already for that program. I didn't see it when I went in to the office of student affairs, but my friend noticed a poster with the 10 new Imi students. Oh well, jsut wondering.
