University of Illinois Class of 2013!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello, UIC m2 posting for the first time to let you know that you do NOT want to live at 1600 S. California, 2 miles from school.

That is a high crime area. It is also across the street from Mt Sinai Hospital, Chicago's busiest trauma center. It is probably not suitable for young, busy medical students who will be coming and going at different times of day/night.

Find a different apartment!

Thanks for the heads up!!! I'm looking elsewhere now. Any suggestions? I have a non UIC roommate, so I can't live in the UIC campus housing.

Anything on Taylor Street east of Damen.

Funny you bring that up. I was looking looking at one on Taylor and Western when you posted.

Taylor & Western is OK but just ok- its head and shoulders above 1600 S. California, believe me. There has been some crime over there in the last couple years, and Taylor east of Ashland Ave. is considered to be a bit safer.

There is an off campus housing database from UIC. http://www.housing.uic.edu/offcampus/

click student, and enter any characters for username and passwords.

I would recommend living close to school your M1 year, until you get the hang of the lifestyle, then you can decide where to go from there.

Some people go through apartment brokers such as Harris Brothers (they have a website, i'm sure you can find it on google). There are a few other similar companies but I don't remember their names right now.

More apartments will be available in the summer months, as leases expire. I also recommend walking around in the neighborhoods, because many landlords don't think to use craigslist, etc.

I hope this helps

can anyone weigh in on safety in the tri-taylor area?

I'm also interested in this area. I saw a decent priced place on 708 S Claremont Ave...

Thanks

Hey everyone,

I got put on the UPR track (Urbana - Peoria for me) and want to start looking for housing. I'm looking to room with one or two female roommates and live somewhere near campus (preferably on a bus line). I don't know much about the area (I live in California), so I'm hoping someone out there does! Contact me if any of you are looking for a roommate too! :)

1) Go to https://ossswebcs.admin.uillinois.edu/PORTAL_UIC/p_login.asp
2) Click on Activate on left side (need SSN, UIN, and DOB)
3) To get your UIN#, go to https://www.icard.uillinois.edu/secure/act_tellme.cfm#online_form

PS, I've sent in all of my information, but they haven't marked that my immunization form has arrived yet on my status page.

So I've seen all this talk about UIN.. did we get some info telling us to go through these steps? I don't remember getting anything.. should I just activate anyway?

Thanks!

That's what I did.

On a separate note, I finally have all my items received (immun form, transcript, etc.). Just waiting on the award letter now.

Going to look at apartments today!!

i'm doing md/mph and starting this summer... you may need to have applied for the mph degree starting summer 2009 in order to do this though.

Hey folks.. I'm a UPRer who is OOS and just finishing up M1 and am definitely willing to answer any questions you may have about Urbana-Champaign, first year, apartments, interview, etc... I remember how much I would have wished I had someone to ask questions last year at this time. Feel free to message me.

Congratulations to all accepted!!!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to throw myself out there again and let all the incoming med students know that I'm looking for one or more female roommates. I live out of state, don't smoke, keep my room/public areas clean, can cook(!), have a well-behaved, friendly spayed cat, will be bringing my car, and am pretty easy to get along with. I'd love to find one or more female roommates (preferably fellow medical students) who already know where they want to live (so I can sign along on the lease) or who will be able to personally visit potential apartments and make a decision from there. Oh yeah, it's also worth noting that I've been placed on the UPR track (Urbana-Peoria).

If you're interested, let me know!

I was just curious if anyone else out there has been waiting since interviewing in midFebruary. If so, do you know when the adcom is meeting again...I know it was going to be after Match Day (3/19)...

Hi Kai35,
I am an OOS and placed on UPR, can you tell me the cost in tuition for each year for 4 years also the living expense?

Hey All,

I just got my award letter. I'm pretty dissappointed - no need based awards. $8500 in Subsidized, $32000 in Unsubsidized, and $10000 in Grad Plus. What should I make of this? It's sooooo daunting......

Money makes me depressed

Very scary. I will probably choose RFU over UIC (especially since I got Rockford). The OOS is just SOOO much.

Just to let you know, $8500 in sub loans is a great amount. Subsidized loans are a wonderful deal and I'm sure you will learn to appreciate them someday. (good interest rate, deferred/subsidized interest & tax deductions)

I also got an email message today that my award was ready for viewing. HOWEVER, I don't have a UIN to create a logon...

Where did you find yours?

Just a comment from the side here regarding loans:

Sure it seems like alot of money right now, but think about it this way: If you were the one lending the money, why on earth would you give out $200K without any physical collateral, especially to some jobless 20-something without credit? Comparing that to home loans, it really seems crazy. In some cities you can get a house for that...and only if you throw up a down payment. And if you fail to keep up the payments, they can take your house back.

Clearly, this education has such a great future value that our lenders recognize the default rate to be virtually zero--and by definition, affordable to us.

Look earlier in this thread. I talked about how to get your UIN.

You're absolutely right. It's just a shock, I guess. They should have made it 49,999.00 to reduce the sticker shock. :)

Hey guys,
For all you that got an award letter, did you have all your pre-admission requirements finished? I have been accepted since October but didn't get an award letter today, though maybe it was because I was procrastinating on transcripts and the immunization form...

I really don't think that makes a difference if you have it done or not.

The tuition is somewhere in the ballpark of $70k each for M1 and M4 and $90k each for M2 and M3 for a total of about $300-320k. The numbers are available at UIC COM's webpage (medicine.uic.edu) but they will almost certainly be adjusted for AY 2009-2010.

As far as living expenses, your loans provide you with about $8,300 for housing, books, and miscellaneous expenses. You can easily find comfortable living for $400-500/month and books will run you around $500-600 for first semester and $200 or so second semester (most of your classes are year-long so you buy most of your books in the fall). Simply put, you will have plenty of money left over from your initial $8,300.

Got mine today also and OOS tuition, fees, and living expenses = $83,708!!! Just in case you wanted to know! Break down was: 8500 Sub, 32000 unsub, 42208 Grad plus, 1000 scholarship. (and I have a family to provide for!)

Ouch! Do you have other schools in mind?

Loans are simply how the vast majority of medical students pay for school. Welcome to medicine.

Holy COW!! I suddenly dont feel bad about 50000 in loans.

Holy crap! I'm not gonna complain about my 50K in loans anymore.

From the time that your Applicant Status Check read

"A final decision was made on your application on ____. Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone."

How long did it take until you received the letter? FYI I live in Chicago.

Sorry to break the trend in posts, but I've got a question for anyone who knows the answer...

What's the word on the Clark Street Apartments? Any good?

Also, what apartment building do most med students tend to live in that would still have spots open for the incoming year?

To the others (separate note)...
My letter wasn't sent until 4 days after the final decision had been made and then it took another 4 days to get to me. Also, I didn't receive the CBC email until three days later, so just be patient and good luck!

Just relax; it'll arrive within two weeks. If it doesn't, call Admissions.

Does anyone currently at the chicago campus live in oak park? I have a nice apt near the blue line and am thinking about staying here and commuting in. Should be ~ 20 min on the train from the Austin stop to the medical district. Does this seem reasonable current med students?

Hi everyone!

My name's Lucy and I'm also c/o 2013 - Chicago track! We should all get together during the summer sometime so that we can party before classes start and meet each other in person.

I attended undergrad here and so to answer people's questions about housing:
If you want to live on-campus:
Most students live at SSR. The good things I've heard from my med school friends about living here is that it's super close and you might be living next door to someone who's also a med student - study buddy! The bad thing is that it's on-campus housing. You'll have to deal with front desk security - showing your i-card/keys, etc. If you have friends come over who don't live there, you'll have to go to the bottom floor to sign/escort them in. It's a pretty big hassle.

As other people have said, DON'T live in the Med District apartments - they have horrible management - if something breaks, you won't be able to find anyone to fix it and everyone hates it there.

As far as off-campus housing:
If you're looking for somewhere to live starting June 1 - it's good to start looking now, but more apartments will open up at the end of April and the beginning of May. The off-campus site is VERY helpful though, and so is craigslist.
http://www.housing.uic.edu/offcampus/ (FYI: for some reason, the website likes iexplorer and doesn't always work with Firefox.)

There's also real estate agencies - Such as NWR, C. Gallucci, Carana Properties - these have office located between the uic east and west campuses so they have a lot of apartment listings available in the area.

Personally, I'm going to continue to live off-campus (somewhere around Little Italy) because I hated dealing with on-campus housing. Also, it's sooo much cheaper - you save so much money by not getting the meal plan and if you room with others, rent is by far cheaper as well. Also, I'm planning on getting a dog (yay!!!) - but that's probably not a factor for most people.

I'd suggest living close - at most a 20 minute commute, because 1) I love sleep 2) I hate having to wait in the winter for a bus when I could just walk home. However, the further you get from campus, the cheaper rent will be.

As far as the tri-taylor area, it's alright - it's still Chicago though, so it's best to always be on guard and not walk around alone at night. Anything east of Damen and north of Roosevelt is safest. I'd say that living close to east campus is also safer, since there's campus police patroling the area

Useful tool:
CTA BUS TRACKER! That way you don't have to stand outside too long
http://www.ctabustracker.com/bustime/home.jsp
If you live around campus, the most useful buses would be the 7, 8, 12, 38 and 60. UIC also has a campus shuttle system and Red Car (you call them up to go from one UIC building to the other when it's late).

I'm also interested in this area. I saw a decent priced place on 708 S Claremont Ave...

Can anyone say anything about this area?

The place on Claremont seems to be decent - it's close to Harrison which is pretty safe. I haven't really been to that area much though, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hope that helps!

That's fine, if you like the place.

Hi Lucy, Thanks for the response to my post! I'm still researching the areas surrounding the campus (<10-15 min walking distance), but I think its too soon for me to move on anything. I'm coming from California and know nothing about Chicago. It would be really helpful if you, or anyone else, could shed some light on how the rental market tends to behave in the summer.

If its anything like the college housing patterns I have seen, all the good places are snapped up at the start of summer, and sublet to summer students until Fall starts after which they move-in for the Fall term. But trying to find a place just prior to school starting leaves only slim pickings...

I just signed a lease for an apartment at 745 S Claremont. We could almost be "neighbors" / car pool buddies!

I liked the area. It seemed rather quiet, granted it was a Saturday afternoon with nothing going on. The guy that's leaving the apartment is going to be an M3 at UIC and had nothing but good things to say about the apartment and the area.

Hey everyone,

Quick question for the UPR people out there. Would you say that living 2 miles away from campus is okay? (Opinions from current med students would be greatly appreciated, if at all possible).

Thanks!
