I was noticing that there aren't too many posts about Iowa. I know one person on SDN interviewed and was accepted there, but that's all. Has anyone else heard anything from Iowa? I interviewed there on Oct. 21 (I'm in-state)and at that time I thought that they said 70% of applicants are accepted rolling and the rest are accepted in March. Can anyone verify that? I may have gotten the rolling and March percentages confused (That's what I'm hoping at least). Anyway, anyone who has anything to say about Iowa please speak up!! Has anyone even been to Iowa before? Also, how many people didn't apply to Iowa just because of the weird online evaluation things? Did any in-state people not apply because of that? So, that's all I have to say and ask and all that.

I have an interview a week from this Wednesday at Iowa, anything in particular I should know? I really don't have an answer to any of your questions. I did almost not apply because of the evaluator forms, but I figured that a lot of other people would be thinking the same way. But really, how much more difficult can they make this process? Can you imagine what it would be like if every school required such forms?! But I guess as long as they are filling their classes, there's no incentive to change. At last their secondary fee is much more reasonable than the fee at most other med schools.

Hey Dsomme. Congrats on the interview! There's not much you need to know about it. It was really nice and easy and everyone was really nice. If you want to really stand out I would have lots of questions. When we met with the admissions officer she kept asking us if we had questions, but no one did! I think she really wanted us to ask her about the school. They have a neat mentor type program that makes 4th years and 1st years work together in "communities". You should read about that because they would be impressed if you knew about the communities, I think. They liked to talk about it. Otherwise, that's about it. It was laid back and I was very impressed. So, good luck! If you find out any new info be sure to pass it along! I hope you have fun back in Iowa City. Also, anyone else have anything to say about Iowa? Come on....

I'm so glad to finally see an Iowa post! I interviewed there late November, and it was pretty relaxed. Like a previous poster said, definately have some questions of your own, because that's going to be the majority of the interview! Read up on the CELLS program (the mentoring thing) and the new building. Here's a link to Iowa's interview FAQ:

I am an instater; I didn't think the evaluation forms were a big deal (you can print them off and have the evaluators send them in via snail mail and that's what I did). In fact, I am a little confused by the negative things I've read on SDN about them! As a born and raised Iowan I guess I'm a little biased 😀 but I really like Iowa. People here are friendly, there's not a lot of traffic, and contrary to popular belief there are plenty of things to do- especially in a college town like Iowa City. They have lots of great restaraunts, funky clothes shops, an independent/foreign movie house, a theater that brings in fairly big name shows... I promise I'm not being paid to say this stuff, lol.

As far as the acceptances go... I just checked my notes and I didn't write down any percentages! I seem to remember that most of the positions are filled from the "final pool" in March. Anyone else know for sure?

Hey HoMuffin. That percentage thing is what I am concerned about. When we were talking to the admissions lady (Cathi, I think) after the interview someone asked her how many people are accepted right away and how many are accepted in March. I thought that she said 70% were accepted right away, but then from the few posts that I have seen about Iowa, everyone says that most people are accepted in March. So I may have either misheard or the admissions officer misspoke. I hope someone who interviews there soon will ask! Not that knowing the percentages will make it any easier to wait, but it may help a bit!

LetMeInPlease,

I can vouch for what HoMuffin said. I grew up in Iowa City although I don't live there anymore, and there is lots to do in IC. There's a lot of cool restaurants and bars and interesting shops, you definitely won't be bored there.

hey all iowa applicants.

i don't have anything of any informative value to share, but i interviewed mid-october and haven't heard anything back from iowa yet.

i'm interested in this rumor of 70% of the class being filled before march. anyone out there with info on this?

Hey Ayj, I'm glad that Iowa City is nice. I'm from Davenport, but I don't get to Iowa City too often. I think the day I went for my interview was maybe the fifth time I'd actually gone into the city!

Also, I called the admissions office today to get some info. (I'm glad I didn't give them my name cause I was really prying to try to get them to tell me SOMETHING!) Anyway, all that the woman would say was that if you haven't heard by ther middle of January (now) that means that you will be in the final decision pool. She didn't say how many are accepted rolling (believe me, I tried to find out!) versus how many are accepted final.

I think we should stay hopeful though because if this board is any indication, very few people have been accepted. Then again, maybe no one who likes Iowa looks at this board. Anyway, I should stop guessing!

I like Iowa. They just won't offer me an interview.

Ditto, and I thought that being a legacy might help my chances. No love for the out-of-stater.

Hey, I wanted to ask anyone who has applied to Iowa a question. Yesterday I received a packet from Iowa that gave me a login to their online registration system/mail system/application status system, Isis. Did everyone else get this? I haven't been accepted, but I have had an interview. So, anyone get this Isis login thing? Please let me know!

One more thing; this Isis system at Uiowa allows you to check the status of your application, so they should give a login to everyone who applied. So if you applied and haven't gotten a login can you say so?

I applied and got nothing like this. I did get the login and pw for an online secondary, but nothing for a systme that will allow me to check my status.

I am kind of bummed. I think that Iowa quits interviewing soon, and there appears to be no love for me.

Hey Jbj, thanks for responding to my question. I really appreciate it. Also, don't give up hope at all. You still have a chance! When I interviewed, the med student tour guide told me that he didn't interview till MARCH, but he still got in! So, don't give up! Good luck !

One more thing, if you want to try to login to Isis, you should. All you have to do is go to isis.uiowa.edu and your login and password are your SSN and 6-digit birthday. You should try that. Maybe you just haven't received your packet yet!

What is the general impression of University of Iowa in the medical community? Is it only highly regarded in the midwest? I know that it has excellent ortho, rural, and opthamology depts; but do other people in medicine know this? I'd appreciate any opinions.

I'm not sure if anyone else got this impression, but when I was at Iowa it seemed like everyone was very depressed, hurried, stressed, or otherwise not as talkative and happy as students at some of the other schools I've been to. This may have been because they had a test coming up, or because I was very hungover. 😉 Any thoughts on this?

i got one of those also

I would have to say that Iowa's reputation is very good in the medical community, particularly in the midwest. The med school consistently ranks high in primary care and research dollars. Some of the departments are among the tops in the nation. Their residents are also highly regarded.

Now to be honest I was born and educated in Iowa:however, I am now at Mayo. (Yes, I have endured many Iowa jokes). Unfortunately, like any state school the tuition for out of staters, which I am now, is high compared to in state.😛

I interviewed mid-December, I haven't heard anything. I thought they told me late January for the end of rolling admissions. But I might be deluding myself. I don't think i can wait until march!

I'm interviewing there on Monday. Any advice? If I find out anything about how many people they accept before March, I'll let you know.

Hey wyo, congratulations on the interview! That's really great. As I've said before, all you really need to do to be prepared for the interview is to have some questions for the admissions director and financial aid officer and your interviewers. They really want you to ask questions. I had a nice interview there. Everyone seemed nice and enthusiastic and the place seems really up-to-date.
If you do find out the % of people (of both the instate and out of state pools) who are accepted rolling versus March 15, please let us know!!
Have a nice time!

bump-- anyone heard from Iowa yet?
wyo-- good luck on your interview!

Thanks for the encouragement. The interview went really well. What a great school, although the students seemed a little stessed. Did anyone else pick up on that? It might have been because they were in heavy test season.

The important stuff is that I found out last week was supposed to be the last week for rolling admissions. The've accepted about half of in-state and over-accepted out-of-state. They'll send out the rest if the admissions in March. For out-of-staters, they end up over-accepting quite a bit and then going about 80 deep on the waitlist. So, if you haven't heard yet, we probably won't until March. Hope that helps.

Wyo, thanks so much for the info! Sadly that means no news till March for me.... glad your interview went well!

Hey wyo, thanks a lot for the info! You answered all the questions! Are you in-state or out of state? As for the students as Iowa, I only met one (the one who did the tour) and he was very nice and stress-free. That may have been cause he was on the five year plan though. I don't know. Anyway, Congrats on the great interview and Thanks for the answers!
