Can anyone share their experiences or information about Howard University and University of Maryland? What is their success rate in placing their students into specialty programs? I'm considering these schools.

The best advice I can give you about preparation for a specialty program is look to yourself and not to the school. If you have been accepted into a predoctoral program, you possess the talent and the school has the environment to enable you to qualify for a speciality program. The real determining factor will be your work ethic.

So what dental school you attended is not a major deciding factor? Your GPA and board scores are weighed more heavily? I thought the schools' name was given a fair amount of attention. But if there is no official dental rankings then this might not be plausible unless the schools are ranked yearly according to performances on board scores. Anyone knows of a site where you can find out how all the dental schools did on the national boards? It would be interesting if there was also an annual listing of which dental schools students in specialty programs came from.

Sorry, that list does not exist. You have to call the school and ask. I also depends on how many grad dental students are applying to postdoc programs. Most of the schools hesitate when you ask that question, becaus the #s vary, they usually say 10%. So you may want to rephrase the Q " How may students last year applied to whatever residency, and out of that #, how many of them got accepted, or their 1st choice, etc??" I think the schools who stress postgrad education, usually have a higher # of grad dental students applying for post doc residency. Some schools may also have a more flexible curr, or more opp. to do research, or whatever. In other words, when you visit a dental school, talk to as many upperclassmen as possible.
