Hi, as someone who might be interested in pursuing IM residency at Maryland, I was wondering if anyone could comment on the program...perusing through their online materials it seems like it is well-designed, having gone through a number of changes...specific things I'm interested in are fellowship placement, emphasis on research, environment, etc....

thanks for any help!

great program. gorgeous hospital, great hrs (they really conform to the 80hr work week), night float (as i recall), residents are really happy. the chairman is super personable and really takes the time to get to know you. the only negatives would be location (for some - it's debatable how great a city baltimore is), and you might compromise on fellowship placement a bit - some of their residents have some difficulty matching into the fellowships they want. if you want a great education, want to be near DC, and be around happy ppl, I would rank this very high. I loved this program, and would rate it higher than GW and Georgetown. However, I wouldn't say it's a top-tier program on par with MGH, UCSF, etc. residents are very happy and satisfied. research is ok, not great. good luck!

I am a third yr/fourth yr at the University of Maryland planning on going into internal medicine, and I can pretty much jus tconfirm what the previous poster stated. We do have a night float here, and the residents here do seem pretty happy witht he program. I've heard from a fourth yr that interns here get 2 months of elective time during their first year, which apparently is a lo tmore then they get elsewhere. The chair, a nephrologist, does seem like a nice person. I wish that I could comment more on it, but I was sent off campus for all 3 months of my internal medicine rotation and will be sent off campus for my internal medicine sub-i. Residents rotate through Mercy and the VA there, both nice hospitals too, and that's where I keep getting sent 🙄 . The area around the hospital sucks, but most of the non-internal medicine residents have told me that the strongest program that Maryland has is internal medicine. I'm not sure about the amount of time residents get to spend doing research, but I imagine that you could spend your elective time doing that. I don't know anything about how we do for fellowship placement. I know that Maryland in-breeds a lot though, I have met 1-2 GI and cards fellows that did their residency here, so I suppose that's good if you are interested in doing your fellowship here too.

The strongest program Maryland has is definately trauma surgery.

Hi all, thanks for the detailed replies, I definitely appreciate all the info. I actually grew up around Baltimore, so am actually quite comfortable with the area...U.Md. will definitely be one of the programs I look at closely!
