straight from the mouth of a current UMass IM resident and US allo grad (not UMass grad either); this is a great program, and both the medical school and residency program's reputation is on the upswing. Although slightly more than 50% of the residents here are IMG's, we seem to be interviewing more people this year, and surprisingly, more US grads (most from New England and Midwestern medical schools). It will be interesting to see how the next intern class turns out. Worcester is not Boston, but the cost of living is much more reasonable, and the drive to Boston is not too bad. The fellowship match list the past few years is impressive as well; I've posted extensively on UMASS before, so feel free to do a search. Although my Milford and Night Float months were exhausting, I have overall been super happy here (and proud of the program, which is more than I can say for my alma mater's affiliated programs, though many Tufts grads have a different opinion). Probably the most similar program to UMASS on the East Coast in terms of format, happy residents, and patient diversity, etc., is Brown University. Many people, particularly UMass grads and DO applicants, have trouble deciding between the two. Our PD is absolutely great; he goes skiing with us, walks about the wards and ED at UMass just about every day to make sure things are going well and offer his assistance, and even comes out to the interview season events at Funky Murphy's from time to time.
thank you, serpiente, for giving UMass the credit it deserves instead of bashing as people sometimes do on here; it is much appreciated!🙂
