Is there still a chance for getting an interview invite to UM? Has anyone recently been invited? I haven't heard anything about how late into the season they will be interviewing, and I just want to know if I should give up hope.

Anyone know anything?

I have a friend who talked to someone in the office by telephone. She was told that she is in a batch of students that has not yet been invited for interview. This was as of last Thursday.

I called the office to check on my status and was told that no decision has been made on my application (which has already been reviewed). I was also told that interviews would end "towards the end of this month, with a possible April date".

So there you have it.

Someone asked this question in a thread almost 2 weeks ago and this was my reply:

I just contacted UM and they will be interviewing up until April 14th, so its not too late for an invite. Keep your fingers crossed, I hope you end up where you want to be.

hey uofchopeful - when did you interview?

bump....anyone know anything else?

This is good and bad; if you are interviewed you have about a 50-60% chance of getting in, since they interview like 350 people for 130 seats. They are starting to take A LOT more out of state students this year than in years past.

I have not heard from them, but I think they need to change their percentlie system for an Honors/Pass/Fail or just Pass/Fail. It's a good school, but the grading will slowly kill you...

They are not done interviewing yet, so there is small hope (if you still care).

I just got my rejection from them on wednesday. 🙁 Oh well I'm still happy about my other acceptances and maybe change is good for me. 😀 Good luck to the rest of you.

MyEyesMesmerize,

Was this a pre or post interview rejection?

Everyone:

Has anyone else received a rejection? Should I be wary of checking my mailbox?

cocoa, they do rejections in batches. Around mid-to end of months they send out rejections PRE-INTERVIEW. I have not received anything, but they make last minute rejections Pre-Interview up to April 15th.

I also received my rejection letter...this is pre-interview. And I had a friend who received his a day before mine...so it seems that a batch of rejection letters are being sent out. And they finish interviewing soon so if there have not been interview invites by now, chances keep getting smaller. I was not expecting much from them and have other plans but for anyone who is counting on UM as their first choice, I wish you the best of luck!

I haven't heard anything, good or bad. No rejection letter, yet. UM is definitely a longshot for me, but I just want to know what is going on. Thanks for the info, guys. Keep it coming!

Pre Interview

It is kind of late at this school, but not impossible for an interview. They stop at April 14th, a Monday according to someone who tried to schedule the latest interview possible. So it is about a month from now. They usually reject all PRE-INTERVIEW like 2 weeks before final interview date. So check your mail for a yellow, thin envelope with green lettering...🙁

I've interviewed elsewhere and seen better, so I won't be crushed, even though I'm not technically in anywhere yet...blast the waitlists and people holding like 10 acceptances...+pissed+

What do you mean the grading will slowly kill you...please provide details as I am thinking of Miami as my top choice. Thanks in advance.

Personally I prefer a less hostile Pass/Fail system for the first 2 years; Miami uses not only lettering, but a percentile that follows you throughout, like an average of your courses...

89% in Cell Bio+91% in Biochem= 90% overall average.

I would feel like I was always LOSING points from 100 and I'm stressed enough as it is. The first 2 years everyone will learn the same science to pass the Step 1; THAT should be the goal, not to compete and already get ranked like high school kids all over again.

Miami will rise in the rankings, and I hope they MODIFY to an Honors/Pass/Fail or Pass/Fail. The % thing will eat you slowly, you will study minutia and not get the big picture for Step 1 like Pass/Fail schools.

If you are driven (i.e. competitive) this is the best system for you, personally I detest this system, not just dislike it. Otherwise, the school is very good. 😀

Hello,

I think you may have the grading system figured out wrong. It is true that Miami doesn't use a pass/fail system. But Miami ALSO does not use grades as mentioned above along with using a percentage system.

I don't think the percentage system work the way you described it. Here is how it works, based on what I was told by the students when I interviewed there:

The classes are INDEED based on percentage but each class DOES NOT combine with another, like 91% in cell bio and 89% in chemistry = 90%. Each class is graded individually. Moreover, it's based on a "top 2%, top 5%, top 10%" system. For instance, if you have the highest score in the class, your transcript grade will be "Top 2%." Etc, etc.

Although this system may seem to promote competition, talking to the students there and learning about their system, I realized that they're not at all competitive. Moreover, what I think is a plus for Miami's system is "block" learning. Meaning, you learn subjects in blocks. For instance, you would learn JUST chemistry for 4 weeks, and then JUST biology for 4 weeks, etc. This way you can devote 100% into the subject you are exploring (typical med schools will have you learning 3-4 different subjects at a time).

I've had the opportunity to interview at many schools (with various programs, grading systems, and ranking), Miami ranks high on my list.

Hope that helps!

Thank you Labrat & Verite for the info and explanations. I am considering Miami as my first choice and would appreciate if anyone has anything else to add to it (like other positives and negatives). I am trying to find where to go between Upstate and Miami and can't stop thinking about them.

PS: Coz I don't want people to think that I am holding lots....All other acceptances I have relenquished (Penn, Hawaii, Duke, GW, MCW, Drexel, MCV).

thanks
Zingy

They want to increase their ranking, so this year they are taking more out of state students. The school is equipped to meet research interests of students: Cancer center, private research institutes, etc. Also, Jackson is a great hospital. This is a school who's ranking and recognition may go up while you are in or after your med school years are over. Congrats on the acceptance btw.

Again, I still think the grading system needs to be changed to an Honors/Pass/Fail at least, b/c people are competitive even if they SAY they are not🙄

Dude are you freakin crazy??? You turned down acceptances at Duke and Penn for Miami?

Miami is a decent school but it doesnt come anywhere close to either of those 2 schools.

I can see that if you are from Miami you might want to stay close to home, but you're from CA. What the hell?

Its not clear to me how taking out of state students will help Miami move up in the rankings.

Are they building new labs and dedicating more money for research?

You turned down acceptances at Duke and Penn for Miami?

I had to. Penn was simply too expensive and they couldn't give me a scholarship either to lower the costs, while Duke wanted all the four years tuition deposited with them (international applicant rule). I feel so stoopiid, but I am helpless.

Miami gave me a scholarship as well so more power to them and that made the decision easier but still hard nonetheless.

Its not clear to me how taking out of state students will help Miami move up in the rankings.

I don't have an answer to that either. Initially I thought that out of staters perhaps had better numbers, but having met and read on SDN I think even in state applicants are equivalently good.

And I don't think that Miami is building any new infrastructure!?!

So, how are they gonna go up in rankings I don't know but all through the interview and tours they kept sating that. If anyone (Canes etc.) know anything about it ...then let us know.

cheers,
Zingy.

One is they are tyaking students with better NUMBERS. Two is NIH research funding. Miami is expecting their annual grants to increase significantly in the next few years. Lastly, ranking increases when a school becomes more nationally known (ie rejects more people). Miami has not gotten many applications since they used to give in state very high preference, but not anymore. All of these things will likely make Miami top40 very soon and in a few years top30. I still think it will take long for the med school to reach top20, but miracles can happen... 😛

Congrats on the scholarship btw, that is awesome. And maybe people could just like LOCATION...I mean med school education is about the same in most schools (you must find where YOU would best fit in.)

😱 How shocking, not just going by rankings and other people's "prestige" gradings!

Lab Rat,
I definitely dig your statement. I was accepted to Miami last week and interviewed there in late Jan. Right now I am waiting on one more school, BU, which has basically been my top choice all along. So much so that I wrote a letter of intent stating if I get in I will DEF go there. But the more I wait the more I am wondering if I wouldn't like the setting in Miami more. And its not bc of location... well not completely. Maybe it does have to do with the nice climate but the students there were happier and more relaxed than any I met on my other 5 interviews. You could tell a lot of them "wanted" to be there, and with the exception of one student it was there first choice.

Anyhow, I am assuming the letter from BU is coming any day now, but I wonder if I am making the right decision. Miami may not be ranked as high but from a educational standpoint I cannot imagine a better venue. Everyone I spoke to applauded the real interaction with patients during year one. I am not merely alluding to sitting in with preceptors and conducting general background patient data, but rather actualy medical work. I was told by one student that they actually helped deliver babies during year one! Maybe they dont talk about it other schools, but I haven't once heard of that kind of freedom at BU or UMD or anywhere else for that matter.

Also everyone I spoke to regarding grading said it was fine. I mean every school is going to differ in some respects. Miami may have not so great grading but they pick up the slack in other departments. Just like other schools may fall off.

Ok I am out... Good luck to all those who are waiting and congrats to maybe some of my future classmates.
BTW, if anyone has any more info about what to do regarding a loi that was sent and how to maybe get out of it please pm me!
JK... well maybe not...

I would definitely choose Miami over most other expensive private med schools (tulane, boston univ, st louis univ), but I wouldnt choose it over any top 10 schools.

I heard that Miami gets $25,000 a year for each Florida student they enroll. Do they plan on charging out of state students $25,000 more per year than the in state residents to make up for this cost or what?

Macguyver-

I am pretty sure they are giving all accepted out-of-state students this year a scholarship that will make our tuition equivalent to in-state students, which is why Miami is a great pick over more expensive private schools.

Zingy-

I don't think you're crazy at all for passing up Penn and Duke. I think it depends on what you are looking for. I got into Miami out-of-state and am pretty sure I would choose UM over Pitt and Northwestern, but UCSF would be hard to pass up if I get accepted b/c of cost. I know for myself, I couldn't care less about rankings or prestige. Miami is a great location, pretty diverse, with great clinical training at Jackson. Their research facilities were incredible as well, and the students at Miami just seemed more easy going and happy. For myself, the question of where I would be happiest carries more weight than rankings - whether or not I become a good physician, I doubt, depends on whether a school if top ten or not.

I think Miami plans on becoming more nationally recognized mainly b/c of a change in president and other administration who are attempting to revamp UM. I think taking more out-of-state students also adds more diversity to the student body.

Good luck for everyone waiting to hear from UM. UM is a fabulous school. 🙂

UM is definitely planning to move up in the rankings. They are planning on doing this by not only accepting out of state students but by building a new research building and other building projects which I am unfortunately not too informed of. According to our deans, UM plans to move into the top 20 within the next 10 years. The new research building will bring in more NIH funds, so Miami will definitely move up in the rankings.
I just want to tell you guys that you can't lose if you decide to attend UM. Miami gives you incredible opportunities for clinical experiences and research. The students here are super friendly and helpful. Plus, the deans are very approachable and are always trying to improve things for us by collecting our feedback. I hope to see some of you in the fall!

True, but Miami's in state tuition is still really high from what I remember... like 30k or something like that

Jackson does have great clinical training. I would rank the best clinical med schools as:

1. Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world and houses 13 hospitals, 2 trauma centers, and 21 different medical research centers. The total number of patient and research centers is 42, making it the single largest aggregate of patients in the world.

2. Harvard Medical School, Boston Massachusetts. It has 15 different patient and medical research institutions, although they are spread out all over Boston so its not as convenient as Baylor. As a whole, the institutions affiliated with Harvard take in over 700 million annually in NIH funding, approximately twice as much as the 2nd place med school.

The rest of the best:

3. Johns Hopkins. Rated in the top 10 in 16 of 17 different specialties (the one not ranked in the top 10 is ranked #25).

4. Miami. Jackson Memorial has over 3,000 patient beds, the second largest single hospital in the world.

5. UCSF.

Is this true? And how long after acceptance do they send out financial aid packages?

This is true. All of the out of state students that I know got a scholarship that makes their tuition equal to in state's tuition. All right, I'm out. Back to studying Neuro.😡 🙄

They sent out the letter with the scholarship info about 10 days after I found out via email that I was accepted. I'm almost positive every out-of-state applicant receives this.

Even though the in-state tuition is still expensive ($26K), that is still a lot less that $32 or $35 that other private schools cost.

Hope that helps.

lll505 - when were you accepted? I am asking because I received my acceptance letter last month but haven't received my financial aid package yet.

Zingy - Miami is certainly an excellent institution, don't listen to everyone here who immediately think that a school's great just because of its ranking! I've been accepted to two top ten schools and I'm still liking Miami much more than them.

😀

hey,

i was wondering if anybody who got accepted in-state received a scholarship yet? i got in a couple weeks ago (in state) and havent heard anything about scholarships. btw, i think UM is an great school and will prolly end up there, but the $$$ is high for us FL peoples compared to USF and UF.

Verite-

I was accepted Jan 20. I received the financial aid letter, I think, Jan 30th. Congrats on the UM acceptance. Are you thinking of going? I 😍 Miami and could definitely see myself spending 4 years near a beach.

For in-state applicants, Dr. Hinkley said that in years past, they used to give merit scholarships based on GPA and MCAT over 30. B/c there are so many applicants these days with high GPA/high MCAT they are using the money they have primarily to lure more out-of-state people to UM. I am not sure if they are still leaving some money for in-state merit scholarships however. (The out-of-state scholarships are NOT merit based).

Yes, as Canes said, they are building a new research facility - the money is already there for it - it's not like they have to apply for the funding or anything. The new facility will also house a new gym with a pool on the roof!!!

Link to NIH awards to medical school by specialty. If you're interested in research, this is helpful - Miami shows up quite a bit and excels in certain departments - more so than you would probably figure if you're not familiar with the school.

So I decided I am definitely going to Miami! I am prety stoked but not sure what the next step is, ie findiong a place to live, when to move, when to find a place, what locations are good etc.

Anyone have a clue? I stayed in South Beach with a first year when I interviewed and he had a fat apartment. I ahve a close friend from undergrad going there too and we may get a place together but is it realistic to find a two bedroom for $14-1600. And if so will it be in a safe area? If anyone has any input please share.

Hasta luego,
CT

I checked out apt. prices a bit when I interviewed there and found 2 bedroom apts. easily for 14-1600 - I live in CA and pay 1600 for a 1 bedroom so I most definitely took notice of this! Hopefully, some other locals can fill you in better on this question, but this is what I definitely noticed when I was there (this was in an apt. guide I looked at that covered Miami and surrounding areas). Buena suerte!

Ok So this is my last question... for the next 24 hours at least!

Does anyone know when orientation begins at U of M? I looked online and for 2002, classes started Aug 13 (a lil early for my blood) but it doesnt say anything about orientation. Thanks a bunch.

Orientation is a week before class: they organize social activities to help students get to know each other...congrats btw.🙂

miami starts aug. 6th for ms1's (orientation then). good decision!

can you please give me more details about orientation? when will they give us this information? did you call the Office of Admissions? when will we get our orientation, housing packet?

Anyone hear from Miami lately? I interviewed about a month ago, and would love to hear if I was accepted/rejected. If anyone has heard, let me know!

I assume they send letters via snail mail. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thanx

I asked about the start date when I interviewed there. Don't know much else about orientation, though! Allygator, I think someone else in this thread said they interviewed in late Jan. and got accepted first week of March, so it looks like they're running on a 5 - 6 week notification schedule. I'm still waiting too! Other acceptees say they notify by email and then snail mail and if you're out of state, you may get a call from the dean. Good luck!

I just got out of a 4 hour Neuroanatomy Final, so bear with me if I don't answer all of your questions. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe we had orientation on August 7 (a Wednesday) and then started on August 12 (the next Monday). We also received our orientation packets 1 week prior to Orientation starting, so don't be expecting any Orientation specifics from Miami in the near future. Well, got to go and take a quick nap before studying for my big, 9 week comprehensive final for the Neurosciences module. God help me!🙄 😛 😉

So a lot of people have posted here and I just wanted to see if we could put a list together to see who is definitely gonna be attending U of M Med School. This way we can also know who to PM with questions.

Class of 2007 Definites
SN/Undergrad/Current Location/Age

1. Crazyterp/Univ of Maryland/Living with the Rents in MD/22

Per my letter today

"our class is temporarily full"

All of you holding multiple acceptances, please start letting go of some!!!!!

Does anyone know if Miami will let you know what your place on the alternate list is?

allygator, miami will not let you know and they said not to ask. reason being that your rank moves daily, depending on what happens that day.. (presumably on the no. of people pulling out, etc.) good luck and yes, please let go of multiple acceptances!

I sent my withdraw letter to Miami today 🙁
I am actually bummed about it b/c I really loved the school and was so excited to be going there, but I can't pass up CA in-state tuition.

Good luck to everyone who is waiting, I hope one of you takes that spot!

thanks for the heads up, lll505! at the very least, it makes us feel there's hope and that the list is moving along! congrats on the CA school. 😎
