UMich OMS in-person externships are open as of June 28, 2021. The option to conduct a virtual mini externship with faculty and residents is available to those who cannot perform an in-person externship but are still interested. Priority will be given to those applying this upcoming cycle. Email the PD Dr. Justine Moe and the program coordinator for more details/to schedule an externship. Happy to field questions here.

is the externship at Michigan OMFS hands-off or hands-on? the website says observational, but then later says that administration of local anesthesia competency is required, but then I also saw you mentioned in another thread that it's hands-off, so just wanted some clarification haha

It is hands-off. Sorry, it’s more of a hospital policy/liability issue rather than a departmental policy.

this observership will still count as an externship to put on PASS, right? would you say it's a good idea to start out with hands-off observerships if i do not feel clinically ready yet to take out teeth, see patients, administer anesthesia, etc. ?

i mean, michigan med school is a competitive place. They probably do like it if you can extern, but don't extern if your CBSE isn't good enough.
Whats the cbse cut off?

It doesn’t make a big difference to visit first or last. Things you can do to make your externship meaningful are: read about the cases you’ll be in and the disease process being treated, be on time if not early, stay until the end of the day if not late, have a good attitude, be engaged, ask some questions, don’t be on your phone in the OR or clinic, and get to know the residents and attendings. You can put it on PASS, yes.

thank you for your responses! i know this is a bit off topic from this thread, but in another thread you said Rutgers is hands-off? the website says externs are expected to take part in clinical activities and malpractice coverage is required
