michigan is definitely up there. i just put down my deposit. in 94 and 92 it was top 5. and not that much has changed. the university itself is 20 something in the world so it very good. trust me. but it depends what you think. be careful though, I realized alot of people tell you not to go to certain schools and tell you its bad becasue they actually want to go there. good luck . ciao.

Last I checked on the stats a couple years ago, UM is 3 or 4....it's on the top 5 list in the US.

definitely a top notch school with solid research.

i'd make sure you get an honest answer from Umich students on their clinic experience though... after all, the school is located in Ann Arbor which is a very wealthy town. you won't see much if you're only treating local patients who want teeth whitening, veneers, and orthodontic work.

How competitive is Michigan? Is it on par with Penn, Columbia, Harvard?

I go to UMich for undergrad and it definitely is top tier for research and has a worldwide reputation on par with that of a Harvard, Columbia, etc. However, the patient pool is very minimal. In fact, most of the procedures are taken care of by residents, and students get some, but not nearly as much as at other schools. However, to compensate, I know sometime in like 3rd or 4th year in the summer, you have to go somewhere up North in Michigan and work there for a couple months in order to meet your patient requirements. I'm not sure if you heard about this on your interviews, but it doesn't sound too bad, but to my knowledge we are the only school that does that. UMich dental school is very good though, no doubt.

I was accepted to Umich and the interview they said the 4th year you get to pick out of certain areas or assigned to a location for 3-4 weeks for patient care. Most of the students I talked to felt they recieved a good amount of experience.. I know some think that current students are not always truthful but the person I heard this from I went to High School with and I know her fairly well. Just my 2 cents!
