I would love to hear some thoughts as to how good of a program this is, compared to other residency programs in terms of prestige, research and fellowship placement (esp GI). Is it on the same level as BIDMC, Northwestern? Higher/lower? Have been having a hard time finding info about the program. Thanks!

I believe they are very respected, I think you will find people who trained at U of M at all the most prestegous hospitals in the county (I am at BIDMC for an elective and a few of the attendings are from U of M). I think they place people into good residencies fairly well. Prob. in the top 15 - 20 programs nationwide. Just my opinion.

Thanx for the advice! Looks like a great place. Didn't offer a whole lot of interview dates though. Hope I can get a good slot.

My faculty advisor ranked U Michigan on the same level as U Chicago, both a tad below UCSF but above WashU. I'll see for myself in just over a month...

I would rank Michigan in the top 10 programs. I think it is just a step below UCSF, MGH, Hopkins, and Brigham, but on par, if not superior to BIDMC, Duke, WashU. Alot of people have turned down spots at Hopkins for UMich as well as Duke.

Just finished an interview here. Quite an impressive place. They seem to really take an interest in their residents. Definately a top programs; perhaps the best in the midwest. You simply can't go wrong with Michigan.

did you get the impression that it's a lot of tertiary care, with a heavy emphasis on research? i haven't had my interview yet, and i don't know what it's like, i'm just wondering what your impressions were. i would love to go to a place like michigan, but i'm curious to know what their patient population is like. does being in a place like ann arbor affect the ability to train an internist who cares for the urban underserved?

thoughts?

Well, not sure if I'm qualified to answer. Here's my thoughts though, there is an emphasis on research (as there will be at all top tiers). I find that to be a positive being that research is necessary if subspecialty training or academics is in your plans. The patient population is actually quite diverse b/c of UM's reputation brings in many from urban detroit/northern ohio/ect. Ann Arbor is a great town. You will have a chance to serve the underserved through impatient, VA, and ambulatory experiences (this is actually an interest of mine). I think going there will basically keep all doors open, from competing to the most elite fellowships in the nation to being a more than competant primary care provider to the underserved. Just check it out for yourself on your interview.

yep. my gut feeling is that i'm going to feel the exact same way that you do. i think your assessment is right on the money. i'm looking forward to my visit...

thanks for the input.
