To all future applicants,

The University of Mississippi Medical Center EM program just got official ACGME approval to switch from a 4 year to a 3 year residency format. This years' ERAS applicants will be the first 3 year class. More details will eventually be posted on the program website. At least 10 spots available.

Best of Luck.

Isolated case or new trend? thoughts?

Interesting. Any word on why they decided to switch?

Trend. I graduated from a 4 year program and can tell you it's hard to defend the 4 year format except in special situations. UAB a few hours away switched to a 3 year format several years ago as well. You miss out on too many good applicants by being a four year program. Mississippi will be amazed by the increased competitiveness of their interviewees over the next several years.

2 main reasons.
1. Yes it was based on trend. Many great applicants didn't apply or ranked U of Miss. lower because of the simple fact that it's a 4 year program.

2. Mississippi has such a great shortage of EM physicians. Switching to a 3 year program will allow more physicians to be produced in a shorter amount of time in hopes that some will stay in the state.

This is a well established/supported program that is totally worth a look.
