Hi everyone,

I have a question about the University of Missouri out-of-state form. It mentions the following:

I would like to be considered for admission to MU School of Medicine as an out-of-state resident because of the following factor(s):

- MD/PhD Candidate
- Member of a racial/ethnic group historically underrepresented in medicine
- Socioeconomically disadvantaged
- Non-traditional academic/career path
- Rural/Urban
- First generation college attendee
- Military Veteran
- Other unique experiences/attributes that would contribute to overall class composition
I am supposed to select the options that apply to me and then provide a rationale for each reason.

My question is: what do they mean by the "Rural/Urban" factor? I'm not sure what explanation they are looking for here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

You can check out a rural index to check what people classify where you're from as. BUT even if websites say you're from a 0% rural area, yet you definitely feel as if you had a rural upbringing, then talk about it. There are a ton of cities in MO that aren't rural based on somewhat loose parameters, but if you go there you'd get lost in a myriad of forests and farmland.

Whoa... I didn't know some med schools only let disadvantaged/minority/nontrad/snowflake oos students to apply. That's kinda unfortunate...

The state has decided not to waste taxpayer dollars on people unlikely to stay in the state to practice unless they bring something to the medical community or to provide valuable perspectives to the class. Why get your panties in a bunch because a state doesn't want to bother with basic suburban white kids, considering Missouri has plenty of those in their IS population. Some states don't accept OOS students at all.

For rural,...that you're from a rural community. Urban? Perhaps an impoverished inner city area???

So I guess I'm expected to check that off? And then describe that I've lived in a city my whole life? Gosh this just seems like an odd option to me overall. I wish this form could be a bit more clear. :/
