does anyone know how tough it is to get into oregon and washington as an out-of-state (CA) resident? what's the screen like for these schools as an out-of-state?

Washington- Not gonna happen

OHSU (it's not U of O)- They are becoming more privatized. read: they accept a higher % of out-of-state students pretty much every year. If your app is good, you have a shot. They do screen, but I don't know how selective they are. They are nuts about volunteering, though.

For OHSU I believe you need something like a 3.5 GPA and a 30 composite MCAT score, however, I'm not sure how strict they are on these. OHSU is taking more and more out of staters than in past years. I don't know about UW though.

Washington is near impossible unless you want a md/phD- and they prety much say unless you are from a disadvantaged background don't apply. they say something about looking at those who want to serve underserved pops- but when it comes down to it, they don't mean it. I applied there from out of state because I love the northwest and haven't heard from them.. and heard from everyone else that screens (except unc).

Oregon, LOVES out of state people. this is because out of state people "get" to pay full tutition. So they actually take more out of state than instate (i'm instate).

the link above shows that almost half the people who enroll at uwash are out of state. are they all minorities then?

those of you who have received the oregon secondary, when did you get verified and are there any essay questions?

received OHSU secondary 8/13/04 (postal mail)

"What values and personal attributes gained from your life experiences have best prepared you to enter the profession of medicine? (submit on separate sheet of paper, do not exceed one page)."

and also submit:
a list of activities for the last 5 years....
$75
letters of rec (i submitted 4 because i've been out of school for a bit, but i think they only require 3)
500mL plasma
deed to your home
etc.

If you're out of state, you might as well sign over the deed..... 😉

WWAMI students are considered out of state. Since Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho do not have an in-state med school, they can be admitted by the UW. If you are outside these states you have a very low chance of acceptance.

OHSU is getting more and more strict with their entrance requirements....I should know, because this year is my only chance to get in. Starting next year, they require Biochemistry and Genetics, and I haven't taken either.

And I'lll second that they are taking in more and more out-of-staters which sucks for us Oregon residents that would like to actually stay here. Oh well, their loss.

But doesn't it say on Oregon's website that unless you're from a state without a med school or an Oregon resident, don't bother?

They only want the deed to your home if you live in the Macadam area.

No, it just says they are given priority. They also give priority to those interested in rural primary care. 40% or so accepted are from out of state.

I'm an OR res and UW grad. Finished OHSU secondary and, like everyone else, am waiting on the UW.

The NW has to be the worst region in the country with regard to in-staters finding spots in their local med schools.

I've noticed that as well. At least with Vermont I can understand their large allocation of spots for out of state (extremely small population)...but for OR? No wonder people leave this state, they do jack crap to keep us here. Don't get me wrong, I love OR and want to stay here, it just pisses me off so badly that they seem to care more about money than anything else.

I'm working on my OHSU secondary. I'm really thinking this one through, since it's my #1 choice. I want to make sure my essay is top notch....*bites fingernails*

california schools are just as hard to get into for CA residents, if not harder... they do take mostly CA residents, but it's still pretty damn competitive. what can you do? that's just why they have mediocre and overrated schools like gw, georgetown, temple, etc. so you can pay your way into medical schools if you don't get into the competitive state schools in your state.
